The Good

  • Reach
  • Resources and learning materials
  • Special features
  • Experience
  • Customer support
Reach
CareerOneStop could not provide a comprehensive number of job postings per month but estimated that they have hundreds of new listings each day. Job listings are pulled from U.S. Jobs, America's Job Exchange, CareerBuilder, and Indeed, as well as nearly 3,000 government-funded brick-and-mortar employment centers. In the future, CareerOneStop will expand listings to include those from Employment Guide and Monster.
Resources and Learning Materials
They provide educational materials for job seekers of all kinds of backgrounds and situations since every job seeker has unique experiences and needs. Job seeker categories include:
  • Career changer
  • Veteran
  • Laid-off worker
  • Worker with a criminal conviction
  • Entry-level worker
  • Older worker
  • Young adult
  • Workers with disabilities
  • Credential seeker
  • Business
  • Career advisor
CareerOneStop provides information about state and federal employment services, such as registering for unemployment benefits and accessing financial aid and scholarships for educational goals. In fact, there is more of an overall emphasis on obtaining formal education than is found on other employment sites. Job seekers can learn about GEDs, certifications, and licenses as paths to a career as well as community colleges and universities.
Special Features
The mobile apps for Android and iPhone include six interactive tools that are also found on the CareerOneStop website:
  • American Job Center finder
  • Job finder provides job listings for any local area
  • Local training finder locates education and training programs, including short-term training and college degree programs
  • Salary finder provides average hourly wages or annual salaries for over 900 occupations
  • Unemployment benefits finder lists details for each state's unemployment insurance program, including instructions on how to file
  • Veterans job finder matches military job experience to civilian careers
Additionally, the website has embedded links to download Adobe Acrobat Reader, PowerPoint Viewer, Word Viewer, and Excel Viewer. The best feature for businesses is a job description writer, which walks employers through the process of creating a thorough job description. The template has sections for occupation, location, purpose, education and experience, knowledge, skills, work context, tasks, activities, and tools and technology. The best part is that the employer doesn't need to start from scratch: all of these sections are filled in by default information from the Occupational Information network (O*NET) and can be edited to suit the specifics of the job at hand. CareerOneStop is thoughtful in its set of resources for ex-offenders, with job search help catered to people trying to move past a criminal record. This includes finding employers that hire ex-offenders as well as tips for talking about a conviction.
Experience
CareerOneStop has been around for 18+ years (launched in 1998), though it has functioned under many different names, including America's Career Kit, InfoNet, and America's Career Exchange.
Customer Support
Customer service questions regarding the CareerOneStop website can be directed to the support email address (info@careeronestop.org) anytime or phone number (1-877-348-0502) between 7:00AM-4:30PM Central Time Monday-Friday. For free employment or job training help, individuals can call 1-877-US2-JOBS. Most of the businesses reviewed only provide support within the functions of the website itself, so CareerOneStop stands out by offering live-person job search assistance.

The Bad

  • Price range
Price Range
All training materials and resources at CareerOneStop are free for job seekers and recruiters to access. However, accounts and memberships are nonexistent to begin with as employers cannot post jobs on the site and job seekers cannot create an account to mark favorite listings, track application progress, or receive email updates for specific searches.

The Bottom Line

CareerOneStop is pretty comprehensive about job search preparation, but isn't the best job search engine. Job recruiters who need help writing a job description won't find a better online tutor than the job description writer for employers, but they can't list their jobs directly on this site. Another quirk is that job seekers cannot search for jobs across the U.S. in the same search prompt-the search bar requires a location to match the keyword. It does seem to have a pretty good reach, and will continue to improve as other sources (like Monster) are added to its listing pool.

I wish I could collect gs-13 pay to tell people to just search indeed usajobs etc. Resume assistance at work one? The jobs for vets are the work one job for vet Employees, like one or 2 per region. I have yet to see any report showing money spent vs meaningful jobs acquired. One former work one center vet told me he "got his golden goose" never called people back with jobs leads or networking possibilities. Its all about me. I got my civil service pork barrel job, good luck. If the program money is so well spent, where is the data proving it with salaries. Show us the proof.

I've been trying to find a part time job and while looking I tried Career OneStop. My sister found a job using it. I thought it had a decent setup, it was a little confusing but I am not the best with computers. I did see a couple of jobs I was interested in.

Bad. Their tests are an abysmal sequence that incorporates no fundamentals of who somebody is or their talents or skill sets. Just a robotic waste of time feeling like you're spending your life to an animation. Prices are deplorable. Not worth a penny or a second of your life. Scam.

They never follow through they tell you all the ways they can help you and once you are signed up they don’t answer your calls or call back or help in anyway I think they get money when you sign up then they are done and just sit back and get a paycheck while we continue to struggle with the job search alone
