The Good

  • Credit Lock Service
  • Instant Alerts
  • Identity Theft Resolution
  • Free TrueIdentity Protection

Credit Lock Service

With TransUnion's credit lock protection services, customers can control access to their TransUnion credit reports with one swipe or click. For example, customers have the power to lock and unlock their credit reports if they wish to block or allow creditors access.

The service can be accessed from any mobile device or computer and protects personal information from identity thieves.

Instant Alerts

Whenever someone tries to apply for credit, TransUnion TrueIdentity will send out an Instant Alert to notify the customer who is having their credit checked. Whether it be the customer themselves applying for credit or someone else, a fraud alert will go out.

This Instant Alert system is designed to catch suspicious activity and fraud before any major damage occurs to the person’s credit score.

If the customer is the one responsible for applying for credit, the alert may not be as necessary, but it can still provide the customer with a peace of mind as it will let them know that TrueIdentity is constantly monitoring their credit activity.

These alerts can be useful in regard to future data breach occurrences and credit card fraud.

Identity Theft Resolution

TransUnion provides dispute resolution services and a number of educational resources and tools to help identity theft victims restore sensitive personal information to pre-theft status.

TrueIdentity offers customers an online identity theft help page to help them learn how to respond to various theft situations and prevent future cases of identity theft and identity fraud from taking place.

Free TrueIdentity Protection

TransUnion TrueIdentity offers free identity theft protection services. It allows consumers to obtain an unlimited amount of credit report refreshes, fast alerts/notifications, and the power to lock and unlock their TransUnion credit report.

TrueIdentity offers customers around-the-clock access to their TransUnion report, sends email notifications if there are any major credit report changes, and customers can access everything online or through the TransUnion TrueIdentity free app.

The Bad

  • Government Action
  • Service Limitations

Government Action

In 2015, government action was taken against TransUnion by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. As a result of this action, TransUnion agreed to provide better transparency and credit report accuracy.

Service Limitations

Unlike many of its competitors, TransUnion does not appear to provide various services like antivirus software, financial bank account monitoring, driver's license protection services, or social security number monitoring.

Customers should consider what they are looking for when it comes to identity theft protection and monitoring before creating an account with TransUnion TrueIdentity.

Although it is a free service, customers may not be pleased with the lack of services offered in comparison to other identity theft protection services. TransUnion also does not monitor credit reports from the other credit bureaus.

gavel

The Bottom Line

TransUnion is one of the three major credit bureaus that offer identity protection and credit monitoring services to individuals.

The company offers free identity theft protection which is a great deal considering the fact that most companies in the identity theft industry do not provide free services.

TransUnion also provides customers with credit lock services, fraud alerts designed to catch suspicious activity, and identity theft resolution services.

However, TransUnion does not seem to offer a variety of services like financial account monitoring or antivirus software.

Scammers! When personal information was hacked, the company that was hacked offered mytrueidentity so that credit reports would be monitored. Mytrueidentity will not allow the person impacted by the hack to sign up for their credit monitoring service. Even though the company responsible paid for the service. What a nasty scam to run. Get paid by a 3rd party, and deny service to the people that are supposed to be covered in the contract.

There are two True Identity products provided by Transunion. The free service and the $9.95 per month (not $19.95 per month as stated in the review) service. This review is for the $9.95 per month service. I think it a great service that is well worth the nominal cost. The $9.95 per month service provides daily monitoring of all three credit bureaus (Equifax, Transunion and Experian), a Transunion credit report and Vantage score (which can be refreshed daily), address monitoring, the ability to lock your Transunion report, payday loan monitoring, address monitoring a million dollar insurance policy issued by AIG, identity restoration support, and dark web monitoring of your Social Security Number (SSN), passport, debit cards, credit cards, bank accounts, e-mail addresses, phone numbers and driver's license. The dark web monitoring also includes identifying registered sex offenders who reside in your area, which is information every parent should know. The service so far is top notch. Once I entered my data for the dark web monitoring I was immediately notified that two of my email addresses were exposed in the dark web, which immediately allowed me to change my e-mail passwords. The service also notified me of a change of my Equifax credit report within 24 hours after I closed one of my credit card accounts. Another thing I like is that unlike Lifelock there appears to be no maximum on the number of accounts you can register for the dark web monitoring. I was able to register 16 debit and credit cards, 5 e-mail address, 2 telephone numbers, 5 bank accounts, SSN, driver's license and passport. I will agree that Phil Bernard's comment about being unable to receive text alerts is true. I have not been able to set-up test alert notifications either. I have not tried to contact customer support to resolve this issue because I am receiving my alerts by e-mail, which is fine with me. Other than this minor issue I am very happy with the service.

I tried to use this company. I created an account and tried to login. It came back with information that my account was temporarily suspended and that I needed to call them. The next day I called, went through all the security to prove who I was, and then TRUEIDENTITY tell me that my address is wrong. So I argue that someone has clearly given them fake information (ironic, as the whole point of their business is to stop things like this happening). They refused to tell me where this address came from, and I was told I need to send signed documents from a bank to change it. When I asked if they could email the details of what to send and where to send it, I was told 'we don't have that facility'. I spoke with 2 representatives and both were as unhelpful as eachother. Personally, I would stay as far away from signing up to this company, and giving them ANY of your personal information, as they seem to accept fake addresses from 3rd-parties rather than genuine information from the person signing up. NOTE: this account was set up after being given a code from a company that had a data-breach. I consider this the same level of account as a 'paid' version - even though I didn't (thankfully) commit any actual money.

TRUE IDENTY has the worst customer service ever. received a notice to create a account from ticket master. after several attempts over 4 different days of trying to do so i called the service number given on account rejection notice. the gentleman that answered the phone was hard to understand and gave no help at all. he constantly interrupted me when trying to explain what was happening. mind you he asked me to tell him what was happening. after doing what he suggested to do ( it did not work) he had the gall to tell me to wait two days and call back, he had other people on the line that he needs to help. after me asking him to stay with me to help me get this account started he told me that he needed to help other s and i should call back in two days. needles to say i did not het a account started. what a crock.

TransUnion TrueIdentity offers tools that help avoid risk at the source. While other services are add-ons and are peripheral to the credit agencies, This is more helpful as it is imbedded at the source where identity theft can be an issue. Tools are active, and coverage is comprehensive. I feel as safe as is possible with their protection on going.

I am ready to pull my hair out! I have been dealing with TransUnion for a year trying to sign into my account. I have received letters asking me to send all my ID in the MAIL! Which I did beyond my better judgement. THREE times I was asked to do this.I keep receiving letters saying that my file has been updated but can not sign in. Each time I call, they can not verify my information after sending it in THREE times! Each time I talk to someone, they sound like I woke them up. For a company that is to protect your identity, they have no clue what they are doing... So the frustration continues. ONE YEAR LATER.

MY TRUE IDENTITY IS GARBAGE. If there was "0 stars," that would be their rating. Received a code in December to enroll because Mr. Cooper had a "data security incident." I have now wasted at least 6 hours and still no identity protection services. I have talked to ~ 10 people at 4 different toll-free lines + their chat service -- 3 people whose names I was able to note, additional 3 people I could not possibly understand, had bad connections multiple times, 2 people who promised a call back which was never received, and I've received 2 case #s along the way which are apparently no help when trying to have the latest rep look up my case. Bottom line, I seem to have an account set up (I did receive the "welcome" email), however, I have been unable to re-access the account -- getting a variety of error messages (003 and 005). Latest rep finally did a PW reset, which seemed to "go thru," only to get an error message. Her response on that was "oh, our system is down. please try again later." These people should definitely not be in the business of identity protection services.

Unacceptably bad service. I tried to access my account, was given a prompt that I needed to enter a code that would be provided by email. I waited. And waited. And waited. Eventually I had to step away from my computer. While I was away from my computer, the code finally arrived, but with a 5-minute expiration. The code expired before I was able to return to my computer. My account is now suspended and I've had to call and speak with someone to try to access my account. The person I spoke with did not speak English well enough that I could understand what he was saying. I had to clarify what he was asking or saying multiple times. I still cannot access my account. What good is a service that I can't even access? This is bizarre.

My account was locked out apparently because I tried to enter it several times and it wouldn't accept my password. I called customer service to reset my password as they suggested. I reached someone who spoke broken English and had a hard time understanding him. Had to give him my personal information and after several minutes I was told the birth date I gave was incorrect. I was told I had to send in a copy of my drivers license and other information and then call another number to have the situation corrected. Had me jumping through a lot hoops many of which I couldn't understand because of the language barrier. Tried to cancel my account but couldn't find any way to do so. I ended up hanging up after many minutes.

They gave me updates by email every so often to let me know if my credit report had been ran to see if anyone out there was trying to fraud me. Luckily it always came back saying no. So I felt comfortable enough after a year with this company to just take matters into my own banks hands. When you contact one of the main credit companies to freeze your account, they advise you that they will contact the other banks to freeze those credit lines as well. Which was very nice to know that they take it serious and help you out with freezing the other credit lines.

I would give this company negative stars if I could. The people on the phone help line were polite enough, but totally incapable of solving technical issues. And I’m not even an actual customer yet - after trying for 90 minutes to access my free account (via Ticketmaster), I gave up. I’d rather pay for it at this point.

I was provided this service by a company that had a data breach which included my information. MyTruIdentity file does not show ALL the hard inquiries on my credit file but some random inquiry from 24 years ago. Yet my credit rating has been lowered due to "hard inquiries" which I cannot see on my file. What gives????

Since Mr. Cooper let all our information be spread around the world they "made up for it" with this transunion garbage. I set up my account and they wanted an email verification along with the cell phone verification. Cell phone verification came immediately and I was able to proceed with the enrollment. I signed off and wanted to sign back in to make sure my email/pw was correct. They wouldnt let me and said I had to verify via email. I waited. Waited. Waited. Waited. Their first email to me came in good time. There was no resend button. So I used the link in their first email to sign in. Said I had to use a code from the email. When I went into the email there were 2 now so I used the most recent one and my account is locked. They want me to waste my time and call them. FORGET IT! After reading their horrible reviews I can't believe that Mr. Cooper hooked up with this. No Im not a paying customer and I wouldn't be one. I can't even use what Im entitled to because of someone elses mistakes.

Although I support educating people on how to be credit smart TrueIdentity need a to improve on these factors. When you chat with support you get timed out if you do not reply anything. This happened to me 3 times before I discovered the “k send technique”. When you report a problem support will call you back and do not given you the number that will call you back or the exact time and day. This allows scammers to take advantage of the fact that we now must answer the cell phone. Most do not answer cell phone calls from a number not know. It’s just not wort it. When you report a problem help is slow to not at all in coming. Even the very simple issues like remove of an alias that was never an alias to begin with. I can only imagine a bigger issue. I’m giving them a two due to the fact that they do educate people and it is free for the most part.

I was involved in a data breach and the company said to activate a credit watch go to mytrueidentity.com and gave me an activation code. I had 90 days to apply, when I entered the activation code it said it was not valid. I checked and I was at 75 days, that not hardly even close to 90 days, over 2 weeks. So really how good is a company that is suppose to watch for fraud when it cannot even count...

I received an email alert from MyTrueIdenity on 08-16-23, l went to the website and found that my phone number had been replaced with a fake number. How can an individual hack into my credit bureau information and replace my phone number with a "KNOWN SCAM PHONE NUMBER"? "NOT ONLY" was integrating this number into my account details allowed by TransUnion, but how did it get past whatever security TransUnion has that "DIDN'T" identify this number immediately as a false phone number? HOW DOES THIS CRAP HAPPEN? After this issue was resolved, I searched this number online and instantly found results indicating that the number used was associated with scams and phishing! Further more I spoke with numerous people during this ordeal (all calls were recorded), I have never used the phrase "pardon me" so many times during conversations, I could barely understand any of the MyTrueIdenity personnel that assisted me, last but not least when I called back to try and track the individual that changed my number, I was informed "DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, THERE IS NO ISSUE, EVERYTHING IS OKAY", this was recorded as well. What a bloody joke, these are the people who ask for your social insurance number when you call in to verify identity and the public is supposed to trust idiots like this????

Don't waste your time with this service. I've signed up with Experian's credit monitoring service and it's leaps and bounds better! This service does not provide personal information removal from the web which Experian does. The final straw for me was when I tried to log in again and it required a code as a two-step security measure. It didn't email me the code until a half hour later with a 20 minute expiration time. I didn't see the email until an hour later. By then it locked me out of my account and I had to call customer service. I was on hold for over an hour. When I finally got to talk to a representative (which is not in the US), they told me they couldn't find my account information despite giving them my full name, phone number, email address. I stopped short of giving them my social security number as I couldn't trust who I was talking to. Utterly useless and frustrating!!!

This company is charging for basically nothing. They will send an alert but you can’t see shat the alert is about. For example, someone looked at your credit report but there are no details. I am not happy with the service so starting yesterday I have beeen calling to cancel. No answer at the calll center and they are closed. I message them and it is a long delay for high call volume. I called now and long hold then they disconnect me. Do not use this company for monitoring. It is owned by TU who is the only monitoring company that has false information on my credit report! I will call my bank tomorrow and block them from accessing my account for their monthly fee.

When I called after a glich in my registrations- due to not supplying my SIN I was given a number to call -ends up being a call center in INDIA. So I explain it the law that I have a right to ask to speak to a Canadian representative. She gives me a number to call and its in the PHILIPPINES. I ask to speak to a Canadian representative again and she gives me the number to INDIA... like wtf....I want to speak to a Canadian if its a Canadian company....am I wrong?????? So I decide to go look into this a little further and I find they are not the best because companies pay them for the service so we can have it free (due to being hacked I am sure). Makes us feel more secure. Well it seems it is not the best company and everyone should see what they actually do supply for our protection- WHICH ISN'T MUCH!!! So BEAWARE!!!

True Identity by TransUnion review Tried to sign up. The system crashed. And crashed again. I called and Person #1: I can't find your account. I found your account. I need to ask you some questions. Put on hold. I can't find your account. You entered your activation code incorrectly. Try again and it will work. (It didn't.) Person #2: Your account didn't go through correctly. Here is another activation code to use. When I tried that, it said I already had an account so I couldn't make another one. Person #3: Seemed like he knew what he was talking about. The was the only one who did NOT ask me for my full SSN. Said I needed to email in copies of identification stuff: photo ID, utility bill, etc. Said it would take 5-8 business days. So far, I have zero confidence that the company will be able to monitor my credit.

I would NOT, repeat, NOT recommend being sucked into TrueIdentity. It seems, from my experience, that all they really want is your very personal information and your money. When I went online today to try and cancel my "account", the site made that IMPOSSIBLE! Therefore, I had to contact TrueIdentity via phone (which is always a royal pain with holds and transfers). I spoke with "Mary Jo," who ended up transferring me to her supervisor, "Larry", neither of whom spoke fluent English. Larry did, however, verbally confirm to me that my account was canceled and that I would see a refund in about 10 days to my bank account. When I asked to receive an email to confirm his verbal statement about my account being canceled, he stated that he could NOT send any email to me to confirm this cancellation because there is "an issue with the system". As one reviewer stated below, I wish I could give TrueIdentify ZERO stars. PLEASE........DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS COMPANY IF YOU WANT TRUSTWORTHY, SKILLED CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Frustrated Levant, ME

Everything was fine until I had to change my e-mail address. I made this change online. Afterwards I could use the new e-mail address as a sign-on name to get to my account BUT the TrueIdentity Report still comes to the old email address. I have double checked that my profile still shows the new e-mail address. The TrueIdentity site shows no phone number or email to contact, so I called TransUnion. I talked with 2 different people there who could not help me, but gave me a number to call ( I repeated it back to make sure I had it right.) The number's automated routine doesn't work right and finally hangs up on me. I double checked the number -- it was dialed right. So here I am with an old email address that has become compromised and a Credit Check report still going to it.

Immediately after signing up, tried to lock my credit report, and I got a message "Temporarily could not process my request. Try again later." So I tried later that day, the many times the next day. I call the customer service number and got such a garbled connection that I had to hang up. On subsequent calls. I was disconnected after entering all the robotic prompts. This happened every day for a week. Then I finally got a connection with a real person, who said he had to refer me to another department and then nothing. I still have not been able to lock my credit report, but I did see that they charged me for two copies of my credit report. Customer service is the worst.

It is not made clear on their site that you are purchasing a credit report and THEN they start to automatically charge you monthly ($16.95) for the continued use of their site. When you call them, they say its in the fine print, and don't give any grace period or warning if you were like me and missed that portion of the fine print. When I checked my credit card statement, I found the charge within 24hrs of the charge and called them to find out why they were charging me. Even though it was within 24hrs, and their records showed I had only used their services one to check my credit score, they refused to cancel my account or give me a refund. It really surprised me when I learned that I was being charged again. I did not receive a receipt, but when I went onto their site (thinking oh, I thought that I was being charged for a one-time service, maybe I have it for a year at $16.95) I realized that I was being charged monthly.Customer service informed me that I was alone in my situation (implying that it was solely my mistake). Then, after requesting again that they cancel my account, they said they would AFTER the month was up. And then, the customer service representative (read salesman) began to go on without any pause or room for me to stop him for about minutes on why I should continue my service with them. I had to listen to him do his sales pitch while all I wanted to do was cancel the service. I do not trust this company now and I NEVER want to use their services and I would NEVER recommend it to another person. All they want to do it to take your money, and they don't care if they provide a fair service in the process. Please do not use this service. They do not care about you, only what money you can give them.

Nothing gets by them, they truly monitor and notify you extremely fast. Whether is a credit inquiry or suspicious activity, new accounts in your name. They are on the case

I've been trying for days to find out what my insurance through them covers for the past 3 days. I can't get anyone on the line who can answer my questions. They give me a phone number, who gives me another phone number, who gives me another phone number to call. This service is completely worthless. Do NOT waste your money. Look elsewhere.

I used this company to lock my credit after a compromise. It didn't save my info on my google account so I didn't remember my login information. When I went to log in, it kept having me type my social security number and last name over and over without moving on to the next step. If I can't access my account I can't Unfreeze my credit.

I had a horrible experience with these people. It took me two hours of my time to get to the bottom of why I was receiving multiple alerts, and it turned out to be their fault------erroneous information AND technological issues ALL on their end.

Attempting to freeze account they push you toward true identity. But web site won't complete authentication ("too busy") despite many multiple attempts over several days. Then they have audacity to email me saying I haven't completed enrolling. Very poor service.

I tried to register my cell phone for the text alerts on my account but was unable. After I entered my phone number it was supposed to send a security code to my phone - It Did Nothing. Absolutely no way to contact anyone from customer support on their website. I will not be doing any business with this company.

If you have a problem they are very knowledgeable and if they can't answer your question they will make sure they get someone who does in a timely manner.

I receive immediate notification of inquiries and activity regarding my credit. Thankfully, an attempt was blocked due to this process. I’m glad I now have this protection.

I only had them for a short time but i found them sufficient to protect my info and send me alerts via email when something was amiss.

Wish I could give no stars. A total scam. The one report i received was worthless - many inaccuracies. Having a tough time cancelling. Will dispute the charge with paypal.

It is impossible to cancel Transunion TrueIdentity . I was told you must go online to cancel, but you got me fooled. I found NO place to go online and cancel....Atty Gen needs to go after them in WA State
