Identity Theft Protection

LifeLock provides several identity theft protection services in an effort to catch identity theft and identity fraud before it happens.

LifeLock customers can receive credit monitoring services (See disclaimer below) from all three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion), dark web monitoring, data breach notifications, social security number monitoring, financial account monitoring, and more.

***Disclaimer: If your plan includes credit reports, scores, and/or credit monitoring features ("Credit Features"), two requirements must be met to receive said features: (i) your identity must be successfully verified with Equifax; and (ii) Equifax must be able to locate your credit file and it must contain sufficient credit history information. IF EITHER OF THE FOREGOING REQUIREMENTS ARE NOT MET YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FEATURES FROM ANY BUREAU. If your plan also includes Credit Features from Experian and/or TransUnion, the above verification process must also be successfully completed with Experian and/or TransUnion, as applicable. If verification is successfully completed with Equifax, but not with Experian and/or TransUnion, as applicable, you will not receive Credit Features from such bureau(s) until the verification process is successfully completed and until then you will only receive Credit Features from Equifax. Any credit monitoring from Experian and TransUnion will take several days to begin after your successful plan enrollment.

Identity theft can ruin everything from credit scores and credit reports to taxes and savings accounts. Thus, LifeLock offers multiple identity theft protection services to help customers find the protection and security they are looking for.

Restoration Services

In the event that a LifeLock member becomes a victim of identity theft, the company will offer a number of recovery services to help restore the customer's identity to pre-theft status. This includes a dedicated identity restoration specialist and lost wallet protection.

Additionally, LifeLock assists with financial, medical, criminal, and tax identity recovery. For a fee of $300, LifeLock will also work with customers who have pre-existing identity theft conditions.

Million Dollar™ Protection Package*

LifeLock members who fall victim to identity theft will receive help from the company's Million Dollar Protection™ Package. The package includes reimbursement for stolen funds and coverage for personal expenses, each with limits of up to $25,000, $100,000, or $1 million depending on the plan that is chosen. If needed to help resolve the case, the Million Dollar Protection™ Package will also provide coverage for lawyers and experts for up to $1 million.

***Disclaimer: Reimbursement and Expense Compensation, each with limits of up to $1 million for Ultimate Plus, up to $100,000 for Advantage and up to $25,000 for Standard and Select (Norton 360 with LifeLock Select). And up to $1 million for coverage for lawyers and experts if needed, for all plans. Benefits under the Master Policy are issued and covered by United Specialty Insurance Company (State National Insurance Company, Inc. for NY State members). Policy terms, conditions and exclusions at: LifeLock.com/legal.

24/7 Live Member Support

As mentioned in several LifeLock reviews that are featured on BestCompany.com, LifeLock provides reliable customer service by giving customers access to 24/7 live member support agents. The identity protection service provider will notify customers (via alerts) of potentially fraudulent activity and will help customers determine how to handle the threats.

LifeLock will also monitor customers' information around the clock so customers can rest with a peace of mind.

LifeLock's website also provides a list of helpful identity theft protection advice and educational resources (regarding credit reports, credit score monitoring, social security cards, credit freezes, and personally identifiable information) for customers to access at any time.

Money-Back Guarantee

The identity theft protection company offers a 60-day complete money-back guarantee to annual LifeLock account members that request a refund within the appropriated 60 days post-billing.

Meanwhile, many other companies in the identity theft protection industry do not offer a complete money-back guarantee with their services. LifeLock's refund promise emphasizes the company's confidence as well as its service guarantee.

Pricing

LifeLock offers three identity theft protection options to choose from: the Select plan that costs $9.99 per month (for the first year), the Advantage plan that costs members $19.99 per month (for the first year), and the Ultimate Plus plan that costs $29.99 per month (for the first year).

Best Company visitors can use the promo code "BestCom," to get 25% off for the first year (compared to the renewal price), of all LifeLock identity theft protection options. Terms apply. These options include social security number alerts and credit alerts.

Within the industry, LifeLock's plans are priced at lower rates and allow customers the flexibility to choose how much they want to invest in identity protection services and fraud security.

Mobile App

Customers can get access to the LifeLock mobile app that allows them to receive and respond to alerts while on the go and easily obtain customer service help through the in-app member services feature.

With the LifeLock mobile app, customers can access their credit scores from all three credit bureaus depending on their plan. According to the LifeLock website, the LifeLock app also includes "dark web activity detection, fictitious identity monitoring, court records scanning, and investment account activity alerts."

Overall, the mobile app is an extra feature that helps protect customers from identity theft and identity fraud.

The Bad

  • Device Security Availability

Device Security Availability

In terms of device security, LifeLock has plenty to offer. Unfortunately, some of the device security options that the company offers are not available to all devices.

According to the company's website, the Family Parental Controls, Cloud Backup, and SafeCam options are currently not supported on Mac OS.

The Bottom Line

LifeLock offers extensive protection services as well as identity restoration services including stolen wallet protection to those who have fallen victim to identity theft or fraud from a stolen identity event. Additionally, the company offers a Million Dollar™ Protection Package and 24/7 live member support customer service.

LifeLock's Million Dollar™ Protection Package covers stolen or lost documents, travel expenses, lost wages, and more (See "Million Dollar™ Protection Package" for details and accompanying disclaimer). The company also provides educational resources, a money-back guarantee, a detailed LifeLock mobile application, and reasonable pricing in comparison to other protection services.

LifeLock has three identity protection plan options that members can choose from - the Select plan, the Advantage plan, and the Ultimate Plus plan.

The company's plans can include credit, social security, bank account, credit card, and crimes/other alerts as well as credit report and credit score monitoring and updates from all three major credit bureaus, etc.

The one major downside of the company is that some of its device security options, such as the Family Parental Controls, Cloud Backup, and SafeCam options, are not supported on Mac OS devices, which may limit some LifeLock account members from having additional protection against identity theft and fraud.

Above all, if you are looking for a reliable company to help protect your identity and personal information from theft and fraud, LifeLock is a great company to choose from.

***Reimbursement and Expense Compensation, each with limits of up to $1 million for Ultimate Plus, up to $100,000 for Advantage and up to $25,000 for Standard and Select (Norton 360 with LifeLock Select). Like so many companies, they bait you with a low monthly fee and then do NOTHING! When an account was opened in my name, Life-lock said they only would notify me if the bank used Equifax for their credit report. THEY ONLY MONITOR ONE CREDIT BUREAU. When I started with them the fee was reasonable. It has more than doubled in recent years and now they want more. Following my recent experience with identity theft, they tell me I didn't get an alert from them because I am not paying them enough. I need to double again what I am paying. Even then, they will only spring into action once money has been stolen, the mere act of opening an account does not trigger action. I should have known that this was yet another scam when they wouldn't open the account until I provided them a credit card to auto charge renewals.

It might be protecting me, but all I see is it constantly dropping my credit card accounts and bank account that I set up to monitor. The passwords don't changes, I make them ridiculously secure. But when I am forced to reconnect for some reason, Lifelock chooses not to remember anything about the account and forces me to reenter everything. Plus you cannot paste in passwords. Ok.. that might be a security feature, but if you use chrome, it thinks you are wanting to use your lifelock password and so you end up having to retype all 32 insane random characters. Unless I make an easy password... then what is the point. They have dropped these accounts some 4 times now over the years and tired of reentering everything. I am thinking of dumping LifeLock altogether and just trust my credit card company to help me if I get an issue.

I had an issue with someone opening a fraudulent credit card in my name. I had LifeLock for over 6 years when this occurred. LifeLock sent an alert within a couple of hours of the credit inquiry. That is the good part. Other than sending me an alert about the credit inquiry, they really were no help with anything else. Their customer service is very inefficient and frustrating to deal with. They seem to be compartmentalized regarding their operation and no person I spoke with knew what the other was doing. When I called I always talked to a new person who had not reference for my issue, and I had to keep regurgitating the facts over and over again. LifeLock's 1 Million insurance will not cover any legal fees if you plan on bringing an action against the credit card company, who in my case was grossly negligent. I called the credit card company myself, but got the run around. I then contacted the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and made an online complaint through them. Believe it or not, I got an email from the executive office of the credit card company within 48 hours referencing my complaint with the CFPB, and after a week or so the credit card company acknowledged their mistake. IMHO, LifeLock's service is overpriced for what you get compared to other service providers.

They are good about alerting you of credit issues and registered sex offenders in your area. I have been very satisfied with there service. However Billing ins a nightmare. It is Automated and only automated. There is no way for you to pay your bill if the card you have on file with them is declined payment for some reason. I tried calling customer service to pay and also tried logging in to pay through my account on there website. It only allows automated payments. in the mean time they call several times a day saying that they are going to cancel my protection yet they are unable to take payment. What kind of crap is that!!! And the customer service rep hung up on me when I called and was trying to pay my bill. No very happy about this.

I received an email in French thanking me for opening an account with them. When I called in regards to this possible identity theft, I was told by the LifeLock representative, that they don't deal with outside the US, and that they could not help me. I find nothing in their advertising that indicates this coverage is only in the US. The equates to false advertising as far as I am concerned. Many of the cyber and phising attacks come from overseas. Perhaps they are making money off our fear instead of doing their job. I haven't heard any stories about people being helped by LifeLock to restore their Identities. When I called American Express, they took a report and told me they would research it and if they found fraud would pursue the matter. I don't even pay them to watch for Identity theft.

Way too expensive for an ineffective service. My husband and I had about 5 id theft attempts in a year. Lifelock did not report One incident, but the banks/credit card companies did! Useless and overpriced. I signed up with Zander Insurance for a fraction of the price ($145/yr), and it includes my entire family, even minor children. Oh, and the credit card that was used for recurring billing was compromised too, and again Lifelock had no clue. Chase bank called me immediately and shut the card down.

My CPA informed me that someone used my social security number fraudulently to obtain a tax refund. I immediately called LifeLock and reported it. The representative promised to email me some forms, but I never received any emails. I contacted them by email and received no answer. I have their most comprehensive plan, and expected at the very least, for them to do what they said they would do.

My wife and I have life lock basic for a yr now. Two times I have opened a new charge acc. In a department store and received a notice during the transaction if it was me. I like life lock to the point of up grading. It has been 4 months now and still can't up grade.

Opened savings account at new bank. All personal information entered by new bank. Informed by manager that I would receive email or text soon from LifeLock. Not a single notification. Called them to complain. Oh well... we don’t report on all new account activity. We don’t monitor all financial institutions. What good are they???

I signed for their best plan. I received a credit alert 5 days ago. Still waiting for information about this alert. Someone is using my credit and life lock does not call me to tell me any information. I would not recommend this business!

What's the use of a so called "alert" if it's 2-5 days after the transaction? They keep giving me BS reasons for the slow "alerts". My bank IMMEDIATELY texts & emails me for the same transactions. I think I'm going to drop them after this year's enrollment period ends.

I gave had Life lock for the last few years. I was a little disenchanted with my renewal rate for 2015 going up 35% for myself and my wife. The service us good but that is a pretty steep increase so I will be looking elsewhere.

My family got Norton & suggested I give it a try so I did... They were forever asking me if I spent this & ordered that it was so much that I stopped caring when I heard from them so I decided Norton wasn't for me & found another company that was a better fit.

The commercials act like its going to save you from getting your life destroyed by an identity thief but the service is pretty ridiculous. If anyone is careful with their information online they should never need this.

I didn't find LifeLock to be that useful and it was way more expensive for not much in the way of getting any useful help.
