The Good

  • Interest-Free Plans
  • Not a Credit Card
  • Use Your HSA to Pay
  • KLAS 2020 Category Leader

Interest-Free Plans

AccessOne offers 0% and low-interest payment plans (and you choose which one you want).

There are no minimum or maximum balances with any of AccessOne's plans. The low-interest plan gives the patient a much lower monthly payment. In fact, many patients choose low-interest plans to give them more flexibility and fit their healthcare bills with the rest of their bills.

Also, patients can start out in the 0% program and then if at some point “life gets in the way”, they can then opt into the low-interest program to get that lower monthly payment.

Not a Credit Card

The Access One Card is not a credit card. In fact, all patients are accepted into the program (regardless of your credit score).

Signing up for the AccessOne Card is simple; all patients need a statement from their medical provider that shows the account numbers, balance, and facility information.

Once an AccessOne account is created and activated, patients will receive their card. The card will have an account number, the medical provider's name, and AccessOne's contact information. Depending on the medical provider, patients can then add new balances by contacting AccessOne with the new provider account numbers or by calling (the new provider) and requesting they send your new balance to your AccessOne account.

Use Your HSA to Pay

Patients can use an HSA card to pay off their balance.

KLAS 2020 Category Leader

AccessOne was ranked number one and awarded the Category Leader for Patient Financing in the 2020 Best in KLAS Report.

2020's Best in KLAS report scores are based on patient feedback across six categories: culture, loyalty, operations, product, relationship, and value.

The Bad

  • No Grace Period
  • Possible Fees
  • Consumer Reviews

No Grace Period

AccessOne's plans remain interest-free, as long as you make your monthly payment on time. However, if a payment is received late or is less than the monthly payment, you will be switched to an interest-bearing account until the balance is paid in full.

Possible Fees

While AccessOne does not believe in hidden fees, there are a few possible fees if patients are late on a payment or their payment is returned.

  • Late Payment Fee — 4% of the late payment (not to exceed $10)
  • Returned Payment Fee — $20 per returned payment

Consumer Reviews

The majority of reviews left on BestCompany.com reveal that consumers are frustrated with AccessOne. Several reviews mention issues with the company's auto-pay, costly fees and interest charges, and sub-par customer service.

gavel

The Bottom Line

AccessOne aims to help patients by offering flexible, convenient, and affordable financing solutions. The company boasts helping over one million consumers afford out-of-pocket medical expenses and having one of the industry's most comprehensive platforms. Everyone is accepted into AccessOne's program regardless of their credit score and the company does not credit report patient activity.

However, we recommend that consumers take their time before choosing AccessOne as their payment provider, as others have found themselves frustrated with the company's customer service, late payment policies, and autopay. If you work with AccessOne, we highly suggest setting up alerts (you can choose from email or text). This way, you're less likely to forget your monthly payment and you can avoid having to pay interest.

I signed up for this, and come to find out, I'm paying an additional $200....insurance and fees on top of the bill from Trinity Health. "We help patients afford healthcare payments!!" ...as they say!! REALLY??? It would have been cheaper to pay Trinity with my Credit Card, instead of this BS!!

I wanted to write this review to personally acknowledge Kendria B. She was extremely personable, and patient enough to walk me through a pay plan enrollment and activation. Kendria instructions were very clear and easy to follow. She is extremely confident and her calm demeanor created a real sense of security and helped me to trust your organization. Thank you!

I set up an AccessOne account because my hospital does not offer payment plans on their website. I was a little annoyed that AccessOne does not accept credit card payments. I thought that AccessOne was using the money I gave them to pay off my hospital bill. However, after receiving late notices from the hospital, I come to find out that somehow none of my payments to AccessOne successfully made it to paying off my hospital bills. In fact, there was a negative balance on my AccessOne account for over a month. Not only did they not pay off my bill with the money I gave them, but they did not return the money. I called customer service, but they could not provide the refund, and had to escalate the issue. I am still waiting for confirmation of a refund, but either way, I basically gave AccessOne an interest free loan. I have no idea why their system is not working and will be forced to pay my $3000+ hospital bill in full now, which is 3 months overdue.

I have used AccessOne a couple of times to set up a payment plan for doctor bills. For the most part they are okay. The last time I had some problems. I sent them a check for my final payment and they said they never received it. They told me to check back with them in a couple of days. I kept checking and was told to wait until the next statement came and if they still didn’t get it I could send another check and I wouldn’t be charged any late fee and if they found the check they would send it back to me. I ended up getting charged a late fee and they cashed both checks. After many unpleasant phone calls I finally got everything straightened out. They are a good company as long as you don’t have any problems.

Contrary to previous reviews, AccessOne is NOT a credit card. They do NOT run credit or report to credit. There is no fixed interest rate- it is based on the prime rate, which is subject to change. If you default on your payment, you ARE offered to be reset as a one-time courtesy within a specific timeframe. Having a company offer longer payments than the 3 months the provider offers is life changing for me! I will absolutely recommend them in the future!

Thank you for your review. You are correct that we are not a credit card. All patients qualify for our payment plans and we do not credit report. We offer both 0% interest and low interest payment plans based on what the patient chooses. We are happy that you have had a good experience with our program!

Would give no stars if I could. Access One took my account of of autopay because they are “no longer taking card payments” and it was transferred back to the hospital. I have been going back and forth between the hospital and AcessOne trying to get a payment plan set back up. No one fro Access One can tell me what the issue is or why I can’t access the account to pay. They always tell me “check back in a few days”. I’ve been given multiple account numbers and none of them work. I get complete nonsense answers from their support team. I give up.

I recently found myself entangled with AccessOne, and the experience has been nothing short of disheartening. After dealing with several other companies offering five-year, no-interest options, AccessOne's exorbitant interest rate, especially after 18 months on a $5,000 bill, came as a shock. Unlike other reputable companies, AccessOne provides very little flexibility on monthly payments, offering a mere 0% interest initially and then imposing a laughable low interest of nearly 15%. The payment platform itself is another source of frustration, as it restricts credit card usage for payments unless it's an FSA or HSA. This limitation creates unnecessary hurdles for those relying on family members for support, who are then forced to opt for a bank draft. One particularly questionable claim by AccessOne is the alleged superiority of bank drafts over credit card payments in terms of security. While the company insists on the superiority of this method, it seems to be a cost-saving strategy, avoiding merchant fees associated with credit card transactions. This raises doubts about the actual security benefits, especially considering the widely accepted belief that credit cards offer more security than debit cards. In essence, choosing AccessOne becomes a last resort, accompanied by a steep interest rate that rivals or even surpasses that of a new car payment over several years. The only alternative is to settle the payment within two years at 0% interest, a timeframe that may not be feasible for many. The broader issue of exorbitant interest rates on hospital payments adds to the frustration. Unlike choosing vehicles or homes, where we have the luxury of shopping around for the best deals, hospital bills often come with unavoidable and staggering interest rates. This financial burden is exacerbated by billing practices from insurance and hospital companies, leaving individuals with limited options and significant financial strain. In conclusion, my experience with AccessOne has been a regrettable one, and I advise others to consider alternative options whenever possible. The combination of high-interest rates, restrictive payment methods, and questionable security claims make AccessOne a less-than-ideal choice for those already grappling with the financial burden of medical bills.

Stuff about extra fees and hidden interest aside, this scummy company has one of the worst software products I've ever encountered. Take my word as a software engineer who builds these kind of apps for a living. The website is impossible to use for many patients including myself, I can not even login. If I want to make a payment I have to make sure I have an entire hour of my day or longer to waste, on hold, waiting for one of their terrible customer service representatives who can't give me a straight answer on anything. They ended up telling me not to try to use the broken website anymore and use the app instead. But guess what? They won't give me a link for the app on the app store and when I search for it it apparently doesn't exist. I am literally going to stop even trying to pay and let my bill go to collections just out of spite.

I wasn't really asked whether I had an option in joining this organization. Greenville Hospital automatically switched me to them because what I owed was at a certain level. I am somewhat bothered that I have to pay interest on my Hospital debt when I have never defaulted on medical. I have another arrangement where I make payments directly to the Prisma with no interest. It makes me question, "Who is helping who?"

Hi Joey - sorry for the delayed response. Nobody is forced into our program, it should always be an option of the patient, where you are explained the program options and have to accept terms and conditions. We also have a 0% interest option that is available to all patients. Our interest bearing program is an option of the patient if they want to lower their monthly payment, nobody is forced into that program. I signed up for interest free as long as my payments were made on time. I set up auto payments with my bank for 4 times the minimum payment required. One payment was a couple days late and even though I was paying 4 times the required monthly amount, they started charging interest and the zero interest went out the door. Not even one time was reconsidered. I think they should have given a one time grace, especially since I was way ahead on my payments. Not good. I would not recommend. Just get yourself a credit card.

I had no problems with my first payments, then all of a sudden my credit/debit card didn't go through due to "zip code problems". One rep let it slip that other accounts had the same issues. They blamed this on my credit card but I am unable to get live customer service from that end. I have no issue paying anything else. Food, bills, my rent. Now my bill will be reverted back to the hospital because we're out of time to fix an issue that is obviously their problem, not mine. I am not a happy customer.

When COVID-19 affected my income and I then tried to negotiate at first a lump sum resolution and then a forbearance, the only option ever offered was the "one time account reset" that one would request after letting the payments stop for ANY reason and the account lapse ( and if you are seemingly deemed worthy by them for mercy, and with no explanation of what additional fees would be incurred). Calling and speaking with a representative (after having to request a telephone number they don't seem eager to make easily available) was an experience best described as "circular", yielding no help what so ever. They remain as of this writing COMPLETELY unprepared for suspension of payments on an interest free basis and appear to not be particularly interested in improving this response. Also they seem to respond to Better Business Bureau complaints by "dumping" the customer by returning the account to the service provider for resolution, as even a brief review of the complaints filed on the BBB Website seem to show. Only gave them one star because it was not possible to rate them lower.

Hi Cliff - we provide 0% interest payment plans for patients who had services at providers we are contracted with. Since we are offering payment plans on behalf of the health system, we are not in a position to negotiate lump sum resolutions or forbearance, this would be something you would need to speak about to the health system where you received services. We have worked with our payment plan account holders during the pandemic to help them with late payments due to job or income loss. We are not a collection agency, so we do not credit report or aggressively collect balances due. If a patient defaults on their loan, the balance is returned to the health system where you received services who could help you further with your balance due. If you have further questions, we would be glad to assist. Our Patient Advocate Center phone number is (888) 458-6272. You can also find our phone number on your monthly statement, in your online patient portal account, or on any correspondence you receive from us. Thank you.

Crooks! They hit me with $400 in fees and interest charges. By law medical bills are not allowed incur interest. No one tells you this either. They also do not allow you to be on autopay until you incur a fee. When i set up the account they would not let me be on autopay. Then i was a few days late on a payment (which is $398.97 every month!), just a few days late and they hit me with all the interest of a 9k bill and fees! Every other medical co. i pay is like no problem, your only human and you did just get into a terrible accident. Now, after i get stuck in this huge interest ordeal they say i can be on autopay. WTH!?! Such a scam. Way to treat an injured person. I've paid everymonth and the bills even say "you paid on time" in bold. However, because i was a few days late on one payment i get $80 plus interest plus fees now on every bill for the next 9 months. TOTAL CROOKS. They are breaking the law and should be shut down.

Hi Patrick - we apologize for just seeing this review. We would like to learn more about your experience, please call us at (888) 458-6272 so we can go over your account with you. We allow auto-pay from day one and we prefer/encourage the use of auto-pay since this prevents accidental late payments. When patients enter into our payment plan, they have a choice of a 0% interest program or a low interest program that has lower monthly payments. We also work with patients who accidently pay late to keep them within our 0% interest program. We are a patient friendly company and works hard to provide patients with affordable payment plans that everyone qualifies for and we do not credit report. We do not have any hidden fees, and if you were charged our late fee because of an accidental late payment, we work with patients on that fee. Please call us so we can give you additional information on how our program works. Thank you.

UNC Healthcare is nothing but a greedy, money hungry system. They use AccessOne for their “payment plans” but you don’t get to choose your amount that you can pay per month . . it is selected FOR you based on your balance. Mine personally is 5K because I have the worst imaginable insurance thru my employer (my only option is a $6500 deductible). It’s not even remotely affordable for someone living paycheck to paycheck, not to mention I’m required to pay out of pocket just to have the health coverage!! My net pay for the year is just slightly over $20k, so that 5k is just not happening after I pay rent, insurance, utilities, etc. No one can offer me any options other than this stupid Access One payment plan - and again, it’s unaffordable!!

I'm pretty sure they no longer answer the phone. I waited 17 minutes for someone to pick up my call the first time around. Now, I just leave a message and wait 15 minutes for someone to call me back. I've spoken with two customer service reps who gave me incorrect information. One customer service rep hung up on me when I asked to speak to a manager. I am in the middle of activating an account that was transferred from Moffitt Cancer Center. The amount I owe is probably quite small compared to what a long-term cancer patient is probably facing, but, it is larger than $300–which is now Moffitt's maximum amount they are willing to keep–and enough that I need to make payments. With that in mind, I am completely outraged that my account that used to be interest-free, in good standing and in existence for over a year has suddenly been turned into a "prime rate +6%" account. (That is similar to a late-payment standing credit card, even though it is NOT a credit card.) My 3 year payment plan is no longer an option because of this interest rate. In order to get a 0% option, I have to pay the total amount in 15 months even though their introduction letter says I can take up to 24 months. Does that seem like they are "compassionate" or "affordable" in their financing for patients? Why do we patients–who have many excessively high bills to pay–constantly get monetarily punished in order for every single person involved in the medical industry to make obscene amounts of money? People go bankrupt, lose their retirement and savings or just live check to check (like me) because of healthcare costs. Cancer is one of those diseases that comes with an excessively high price tag and now I see why: everyone involved is complicit. What this predatory "lender" (industry) is doing is disgusting and very much like the MOB. No one should have to keep paying off dozens of people to try to live pain free or to stay alive. No one. I have been waiting for 3 days for a "manager" at AccessOne to return my call and tell me what my monthly interest rate will be. I have left 2 messages. I refuse to activate my account until I get an answer. Tomorrow my unactivated account goes to collections. And whose fault will that be? Stop the medical industry's shakedown: Medicare for all!

Hi Robin - we apologize for just seeing this review and for the long hold times you experienced in calling us, which is not the normal experience. When we take over an existing payment plan from a healthcare provider, we honor the same terms you were paying with that provider. If you add additional charges to an AccessOne account, we then offer both 0% interest payment plans and a low interest payment plan that provides lower monthly payments. The amount of payments you make is based off of your total balance, and patients choose whether they prefer a 0% or low interest plan. Our mission is to help patients with affordable payment plans, all patients qualify for our payment plans, and we do not credit report if a patient makes a late payment or defaults. Since we are not a collection agency, we do not aggressively try to collect on balances due. We offer payment plans on behalf of the provider, if a patient chooses not to use one of our payment plans, that balance remains with the provider you received services at. We would be happy to further assist you, please call into our Patient Advocate Center at (888) 458-6272 if you have any more questions regarding how our program works. Thank you.

Terrible customer service. Wait on hold for over ten minutes every time just to be told “I can’t help you with that, I’ll have to have someone call you back.” Staff gets louder to speak above customer and will not listen. Do not EVER make a single error with payment (or bother to fix it) because they will screw you and you will be charged a $20 fee no matter what happened. Manager states they have ability to reverse a fee if a staff member makes an error, but if the customer makes a one time human error, you are stuck with the fee, no matter if you fixed it and still made the payment on time.

I have requested a credit card from them 3 times now. After the first time I received an email stating I would receive additional information shortly. After the second time, I was told I already have an account and to give it time to activate. Now, I have tried a third time (it's been two months since the first attempt) with the same response. The hospital has said that I am going to go into collection in two weeks unless the entire balance is paid off. At this point since the hospital only partners with this company and I can't even come close to being able to pay off the entire bill, it looks like my credit is about to take a hit.

I am thankful for this program, however, my interest rate continues to increase every couple of months. It started at the 9.25 % rate but now I am paying 10.75%. Why does my interest rate keep going up when I am making my payments on time and paying more than the minimum payment due? Not cool.

I would give zero if I could. I was double charged and when I asked them to return the extra money they took they said it would take 5-8 days. Over a month later still nothing. I Called again for them to keep the payment for the current months payment. They agreed to do so and said my account will show this reflection by the end of the day. Weeks later and still nothing. This is by far the worst payment arrangement I have ever had or have been offered for a MEDICAL PROCEDURE. The interest and the monthly payment amounts are asinine! BEWARE, READ FINE PRINT BEFORE YOU SIGN. I SPOKE DIRECTLY TO A SALES REP REGARDING OBTAINING MEDICAL BENEFITS FOR MY SON. THE SALES REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT I HAD 30 DAYS TO DECIDE IF I WANTED TO CONTINUE WITH THE PROGRAM. WITHIN IN 7 DAYS I DECIDED, THE PROGRAM DID NOT SUIT THE ECONOMIC NEEDS FOR ME, AND I CANCELLED. WHAT I DID NOT KNOW WAS THAT MY CREDIT CARD GOING TO BE IMMEDIATELY CHARGED FOR THE FIRST MONTH PLUS $50 ONE-TIME ENROLLMENT. I SHOULD HAVE READ THE SMALL PRINT.

Hi Carolyn - it sounds like you were working with a different AccessOne (there are multiple AccessOne's in the US). We do not have sales representatives that work with consumers, we don't provide medical benefits, we do not charge credit cards and we do not have monthly or one-time enrollment fees. We'd be glad to give you more information about our payment plans if you call our Patient Advocate Center at (888) 458-6272. We offer monthly payment plans to patients who received services at a participating health system. Thank you.

I have set up auto pay multiple times. I have watched it fail after making one payment. I have contacted this company over and over with ZERO customer service. I believe this is their way to scam people into paying them interest when they "default" on their plan. Well, I didn't default, THEY DID, and you can bet your bippy if they try to charge me anything I will be consulting an attorney. I am also going to report them to the BBB and to the medical facility that I am "paying" thru their company to advise them of their business practices.

Do not use this company. It's a scam. They tell you no interest for a year. Got my first bill and it's $18.75 interest charge. I have a credit card with Well Fargo for 22 months with no interest. If I knew that I would have use it instead of AccessOne. They are liars.

The monthly payments are intetionally made too high so they can charge interest and make money from people. It is not a way to help people pay off their unfortunate and unplanned for medical bill. They should find out what a patient can afford and accept that minimum payment, if they are realy not trying to make money from people.

Worst payment site ever. Terrible navigation options. I have an account, but still have to get an access code to pull up my payment options. Absolutely aweful.

I wasn't asked if I had an option to be placed with AccessOne. Greenville Hospital System just put me with AccessOne and they are charging 14.50% interest on top of my medical bills. That's not help, that's loan sharking!

Hi Florence - please know that entering our program is a choice of the patient, nobody can be put into our program without knowledge of the patient, understanding how it works and accepting terms and conditions. Also, we have a 0% interest option that all patients can select. It's a choice of the patient to enter our interest bearing program which lowers your monthly payment. I encourage you to reach out to our Patient Advocate Center to speak about this situation. Please call 888.458.6272. Thank you!
