The Bad

  • Insufficient Customer Reviews
  • Few Plan Options
  • Limited Availability

Insufficient Customer Reviews

Medica health insurance reviews are limited on BestCompany.com. Since we haven't received many Medica reviews, conclusions about the customer experience and customer satisfaction are not available.

Few Plan Options

While Medica includes great benefits with its plans, it doesn't offer many coverage options. In some areas, it may only offer one plan. If one of Medica's plans is a good fit for you, that's great. If not, you may want to consider another health insurance company. Larger health insurers can have more health plan options.

Limited Availability

Medica health plans are only available in some parts of the United States. If they are not available in your area, you'll have to consider another health insurer.

The Bottom Line

Medica health insurance is worth considering if you live in one of the areas it services.

Although Medica insurance reviews on BestCompany.com are limited, the insurance company offers a range of coverage types including group health insurance, Medicare, and individual and family plans. It also offers helpful perks to enrollees with its individual and family health plans.

Keep in mind that your coverage options may be limited. If one of its plans isn't a good fit, look into other health insurers.

DR Minneapolis, MN

MEDICA IS THE WORST, not the BEST. Medica gets one star so that I could get to this page to write about how horrible the company is. There is nothing "AMAZING" about Medica except that they could be committing a very serious fraud against Minnesota consumers. Put another way, this HMO experiment is failing the people who are spending their hard-earned money investing in it, and where is the money going? Read on. This is broad summary here, but as I write this, I am putting together what I hope could be the start of a class action law suit against this corrupt "non-profit", "tax exempt" holding company. There are so many of us who are Medica customers, and we are perplexed and outraged by Medica's contractual double talk and fraud. We're new to Minnesota, and my partner's employer recently switched from UnitedHealthcare to Medica. Medica is a "non-profit". What on earth does that mean? Established in 1975, Medica is the product of a merger between two physician-founded HMOs in Hennepin County, and its parent company is the non-profit, tax exempt holding company called Medica Holding Company. More to come on this, but how is it you call yourselves a non-profit HMO? Honestly, nothing is clear, except for the following: Medica fails to pay for benefits, as approved and promised; the in-network coverage is totally impossible to understand; Medica arbitrarily pays for standard coverage, usually not in full, and we just don't know what we're going to get; and, finally, for some reason it feels like we're always satisfying a deductible--but I can't figure out what it is! I am still trying to get my head around every bill and statement Medica has sent us. In a nutshell, ever since we started using Medica after my partner's company switched away from United Healthcare, we have been spiraling into medical debt and EVERY SINGLE doctor visit we have made has been followed by an invoice from the provider. We're compliant--we stay in network. But, of course, we can never be sure with Medica what constitutes "in-network", even though we live in Minnesota and Medica was established locally for residents. Lastly, we are, obviously, seeing Minnesota providers. So, right here is the heart of the matter: what are we doing wrong to not get benefits paid and why can't we get simple answers? At this point, I can't bear to fight this by calling Medica. (Why does it have to be so complicated and stressful?) I have read too many complaints on the Better Business Bureau web site, Wallet Hub, Pissed Consumer and others that Medica is unresponsive and gives people the runaround, and I just don't know if I have the will, much less the time, to call Medica with what is now a stack of bills that have not been covered by Medica. What we ARE doing is telling my partner's employer that we are seeking our own medical insurance and getting AWAY from Medica as fast as we can. We will also recommend that the company extract itself from Medica as the group medical insurance provider. SHAME on you, Medica. This is a horrible, deceitful "non-profit" company and, according to Indeed and Glassdoor, also a toxic employer. What is your end game, Medica?

Their coverage, despite having 50-60% higher premiums, barely covered anything outside medication. Once you cancel your coverage, they'll keep charging you for it and you have to call several times just to get a refund. Did I mention how long to talk to anyone? 45 minutes to an hour minimum! So clear out a week when you need to speak to anyone

I find medica to be the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with. Their customer service people are very polite but I am still unable to get any help from them that I need.
