If you're looking for group disability coverage to offer employees, MetLife and Cigna are both good options. Both companies offer short-term and long-term disability insurance. Cigna offers a few more support programs to assist employees through recovery like case management. However, if you're interested in salary continuance programs or administration service only, MetLife is the better option.

We have Cigna insurance through my husbands employer. I do like how helpful they have been when I've called with questions or concerns. I don't like that they aren't accepted at the facilities closest to me or that they force me to fill prescriptions through their Home Delivery Pharmacy.

I called in to confirm that all the procedure codes were covered. They confirmed that all of them were covered. I got the procedures, and then got a bill for over $1000. Turns out, that if you get your tooth pulled and get the hole in your head filled on the same day, they don't cover either. What's the solution, wait until the next day to get the bone graft and possible infection to set in? Absolutely terrible service and when I appealed the claim multiple times, they basically said, "You need to have the dentist submit for preauthorization to ensure everything is covered". THIS IS WHY I CALLED! Despicable and deceitful business practices. NEVER recommending this company to anyone.

MetLife's group short-term and long-term policies offer incentives for returning to work and allow employees to adjust benefit periods when signing up. For employers looking for other options, MetLife also offers salary continuance and administrative services only. It has separate products and services to support healthy living at work.
Cigna also offers group short-term and long-term disability. Its policies include vocational and active case management to support employees as they recover. Policyholders can also benefit from participation in Cigna Healthy Rewards® discount program, My Secure Advantage™, and Life Assistance ProgramSM.
Cigna Healthy Rewards® offers access to discounts on products and services that support health.
The My Secure Advantage™ program offers 30 days of free financial planning and 25 percent discounts on tax preparation and attorney fees.
The Life Assistance ProgramSM offers access to in-person counseling services, 30 minute legal or financial consultations, and 24/7 phone consultations.
The breadth of Cigna's support programs for disability policyholders makes it an excellent choice for employers looking for ways to support employees through difficult times. If you're looking for simpler solutions, like administrative services only, MetLife is a good choice.
