The Good

  • Low Rates
  • Fast Benefits
  • Guaranteed Issue
  • Aflac Value Rider

Low Rates

While premiums vary based on industry and pay, rates can be as low as $8.17 per week for an Aflac policy.

Fast Benefits

Aflac's disability coverage has a three month benefit period.

The insurance policy's elimination period, or time until benefits kick-in, is different for accident and illness.

In the event of an accident, the elimination period is zero days.

For illnesses, the elimination period is seven days.

Guaranteed Issue

Some of Aflac's short-term disability insurance offerings are guaranteed issue, so the underwriting process is simpler.

Aflac's policies are also renewable until age 75.

Aflac Value Rider

Customers can add the Aflac Value Rider to their short-term disability policy. The Aflac Value Rider pays the policyholder up to $1,000 every five years for maintaining insurance coverage with the policy and the rider.

The Bad

  • Short-Term Disability Insurance Only
  • Payroll Deduction Only
  • Exclusions
  • Limited Customer Reviews

Short-Term Disability Insurance Only

Aflac only offers short-term disability insurance. Those interested in a long-term policy will have to find another disability insurance company.

Payroll Deduction Only

Aflac accepts premium payments only via worksite payroll deduction. Consumers wanting to purchase Aflac insurance need to consult with their company's human resources team.

Aflac short-term disability insurance does not provide coverage for everything. In Arizona, Idaho, New Jersey, and Virginia, the following exclusions may apply:

  • Pregnancy (within first 10 months, unless there are complications)
  • Elective abortions
  • Conditions resulting from non-prescription drug use
  • Drug addiction
  • Accidents while intoxicated or under influence of controlled substance
  • Self-inflicted injury
  • Non medically necessary procedures
  • Non injury-related dental treatment
  • War exposure
  • Active duty military
  • Organ donation (within first 12 months)
  • Mental or emotional disorders
  • Breaking the law or being incarcerated
  • Work-related injuries
  • Pre-existing conditions (unless occurs 12 months after beginning coverage)

Limited Customer Reviews

Best Company has not received many Aflac disability insurance reviews. With so few reviews, conclusions on the customer experience are not available.

The Bottom Line

While Aflac short-term disability insurance doesn't cover every circumstance, it provides good coverage for most disability situations. If you're an employer interested in offering a disability benefit to employees, Aflac's policies offer short elimination periods that allow its policyholders to receive fast payouts.

Customers interested in Aflac disability insurance should talk with the human resources department at work to figure out deductions for premium payment.

For those interested in purchasing their own disability insurance product or a long-term policy, you'll need to find another insurance provider.
