Constellation Energy is an Exelon company that provides more than 2.5 million customers across the United States with energy. Additionally, it provides two-thirds of Fortune 100 companies with energy as well as a "commitment to innovation, dependability, transparency, and service." As a deregulated energy company operating in several different competitive markets, Constellation Energy retains its industry edge by providing its customers with not only competitive pricing and a quality customer-experience, but also with a wide selection of energy solutions, including electricity, natural gas, renewable energy, distributed energy, solar, energy efficiency, and home services.

The Good

  • Competitive Pricing
  • User-Friendly Online Experience
  • Open Line of Communication

Competitive Pricing

Customers who choose Constellation Energy are generally able to lower their existing energy rates, which, according to Constellation Energy, are designed to fit any budget. Constellation Energy provides energy bundles that include both electricity and natural gas, or customers may choose their utilities a la carte, creating their own bundles or selecting just one service option. On average, customers save 3 percent when they switch to Constellation Energy. The company provides an entire section of its website to the competitive market. It believes that the deregulated energy industry is at its best when prices are determined through fair and competitive markets. Accordingly, it believes that a market with fair competition promotes more efficiency, greater innovation, and more diverse products. With this in mind, Constellation Energy has placed itself in states and service areas in which it can be at its best in terms of service provided and charge levied.

User-Friendly Online Experience

One of Constellation Energy's goals is to provide a seamless online experience for its customers. It accomplishes this goal by providing detailed, yet straightforward product and services pages as well as an extensive FAQ page. More than that, customers are able to login and access their current energy use and billing online or on their mobile devices via the Constellation Energy VirtuWatt app.

Open Line of Communication

One thing that Constellation Energy values is the feedback of its customers. Because of this, the company regularly reaches out to customers with surveys and questionnaires to elicit feedback that will then be implemented into future and existing plans and programs. With this feedback, Constellation is able to enhance its service in a way that better fits its customers' needs.

The Bad

  • Exclusively Fixed-Term Plans
  • Lack of Supplier Choice

Exclusively Fixed-Term Plans

A long-term energy plan may not be suitable for everyone, specifically students, interns, or those who plan on moving within the next year. Most of Constellation Energy's plans are fixed to either 12 or 24 months. For customers who move or wish to cancel their service before the fixed-term is up, a hefty cancellation/early termination fee will be applied to their final bill.

Lack of Supplier Choice

Another con, when compared to many competitors, is Constellation Energy's canned plans. Customers are not able to choose their own energy supplier, but rather they must go with the company and rate that Constellation selects. While this may not necessarily raise rates, the option to choose one's energy supplier is a perk that many other deregulated energy companies offer.

The Bottom Line

When it comes down to it, Constellation Energy can be the right choice for many customers. It offers competitive, simple energy plans with fixed rates. For customers who are on a shorter timeline at their residence or want the flexibility to select their own provider, Constellation should be avoided. For everyone else, Constellation Energy can be a very competitive option for both electricity and natural gas utilities.
