The Good

  • Range of Dental Plans Offered
  • Multiple Languages for Customer Service and Support

Range of Dental Plans Offered

Liberty Dental Plan offers Medicaid dental plans in Florida and Nevada. It also offers MediCal dental in California. Its MediCal dental plans include free transportation for its PHP members.

Health insurance Exchange dental plans are available from Liberty Dental Plan in California, Florida, Missouri, and Nevada. These plans are great for people looking for affordable, comprehensive coverage. They are part of the health insurance marketplace set up by the Affordable Care Act.

In California, a Covered California Small Business Plan is also offered to small business owners on the health insurance marketplace. If you’re in Florida or California, you can also buy private dental plans through Liberty Dental Plan.

Liberty Dental Plan’s plans are typically Dental Health Maintenance Organizations (DHMOs) or Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). These plan types indicate the kind of network coverage offered. DHMO plans only offer coverage for in-network dental care, while PPO plans offer some coverage for out-of-network dental care. Keep in mind that even with insurance coverage, out-of-network care tends to have higher out-of-pocket expenses for you.

Multiple Languages for Customer Service and Support

Liberty Dental Plan provides information and support in many languages, including Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Members can also receive help and forms in other languages as needed.

The Bad

  • Limited Availability

Limited Availability

Liberty Dental Plan only offers programs in California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, Jew Jersey, New York, and Texas. If you’re not in one of those states, you’ll need to look for another dental plan provider.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for Medicaid dental coverage, a dental plan from the health insurance marketplace, or a private dental plan, Liberty Dental Plan may have an option for you depending on where you live.

The other perk of working with Liberty Dental Plan is that you can receive documents and support in your preferred language. The wide range of language offerings makes Liberty Dental Plan accessible by many in the United States.

If Liberty Dental Plan isn’t available in your area or doesn’t offer a plan you need in your area, you’ll need to consider alternatives.

It should be rather obvious from all of the reviews that Liberty is HORRIBLE. I will add that if you have any choice, stay away from Liberty. DentaQuest seems to be the product of choice for Medicaid, though it's not so great either. My experience with Liberty is similar to what many others have said: Dentists and providers dropping Liberty due to problems with getting claims filed and settled, constantly changing providers, claims not being processed properly, having to pay out of pocket far more than I should have to, and a lack of communication. In particular, I had to try for 6 months to get a proper referral from the primary dentist to get oral surgery. The dentist had to submit the referral 4 times to get Liberty to accept it and send it to us. When we finally got that, scheduling with the nearest oral surgeon (which was over an hour of driving distance away!) was a 2 month wait just for the initial consult, followed by another 2 months for the surgery. And then just before the surgery the oral surgeon stated that they dropped Liberty and wouldn't be filing our claim for us. So we had to pay out of pocket and file the claim ourselves, only for the claim to be denied because the surgery required a preauthorization that was never requested by the surgeon. We are still fighting about this and find it completely unacceptable.

The skill in this company is limited to jerking aroud the people they insure. After 6 months and a 100 phone calls of them trying to find a provider I am still awaiting services.. They have played every game in the book. Referring me to dentists who do not take the plan. Referring me to dentists who do not perform the procedures I require. Referring me to dentists more than 100 miles away. Scam isn't too strong a term.

Liberty Dental is part of my Florida Oscar Medicare Advantage benefit services which I opted for in 2022. There were a lot of network dentist within 5 miles of my home when plan started but as I checked further determined most associated with large chain dental offices. It was difficult to get anyone to actually answer the phone to make appointments. I finally found one good and small dental office in Fort Lauderdale, FL near my home and got 1st appointment in April 2022. They were all very nice staff and did x-rays and check- up and made some recommendations for dental work but cautioned that they needed to get pre-authorization from Liberty before would do any work since they had so many problems getting paid in past. Liberty did make the approval in writing to me and dentist but cautioned it did not guarantee approval once work done. Within a week of my dental visit I got another written notice from Liberty that the dentist I went to is no longer in the plan and the work authorized was for that dentist only and I would need to select another dentist in the Liberty Plan and start process over. I checked the list of original dentists on plan in January and found there were very few left. Either dentist dropped out of plan or stopped taking new patients. Originally there were at least 50 dentists within 5 miles of m home and now there were 3 left. That should tell me enough about why these dentists stopped taking any more patients. I will not use Liberty again even though my Oscar Medicare Advantage plan still offers it with a $2000 annual limit. If you can't get dental work done, then Liberty keeps the profits from what Oscar provides to them in the contract to provide dental service to their members. I returned to my private dentist to get my dental work done and had to pay out of pocket. I let Oscar know of all the problems I had with Liberty Dental and not to continue to contract with them since it is a waste of money and no benefit to the Oscar member as well as hurting Oscar's reputation for offering such a poor dental plan. I only used $64.00 of the $2000 limit in 2022 due to Liberty Dental problems.

They are the worst---oh yes, my dental company takes Liberty Dental, BUT UNLESS the dentist is contracted with them--DENIAL-- Makes me so upset as I do NOT want to find a dentist SOMEWHERE that is contracted with them, it's NOT FAIR. Yes our dental company IS on their plan, BUT even though my dentist works for my dental company, I was denied as the dentist who did my work was NOT on "their plan" I don't want to have to "TRY" a different dentist as who wants to start all over with going over ALL my history and having to have a stranger work on my mouth when I have been with the same place for about 20 years. I understand if one retires and I HAVE to switch to another dentist in the same office, but at least they know me and can consult with the previous dentist until he leaves. My dental office is WONDERFUL and is so good about working with me on payments and they treat me like a PERSON, not just another CUSTOMER. Liberty Dental is just another insurance co. that is only concerned about them making money, not us as consumers. IF Blue Cross Advantage doesn't find a better Dental Company, I will have to switch to one that does.

My insurance agent recommended I replace my Medicare with a BCBS replacement policy. I'm not a big consumer of health care and the dental coverage that is subcontracted with Liberty Dental was the one thing I needed. But after months of effort, many, many hours of effort and massive frustration, I have not been able to get a claim submitted into their system. Both BCBSNC and Liberty Dental are dismissive, avoid answering the phone, and refuse to call back from phone messages. I'm planning on taking them to small claims court, filing a complaint wit the state insurance commission, and -of course- changing insurance companies next year.

My daughte has an impacted #11 canine angled at 45 degrees. Due to the eruption path of #11 primary tooth "H" will likely be retained and there is a possibility of root resorption of #9 and #10. The dentist said it is in her best interest to have orthodontic treatment in conjunction with oral surgery to expose and bond #11. BUT THEY DENIED THE CLAIM AND THE APPEAL. This dental insurance is a joke. I've put in a complaint with Medicaid and BBB.

Trash dental insurance that doesn't actually cover anything. I was told we had a zero deductible and they would cover 80% of my daughter's dental work. She needed some fillings well guess what. They will after we have paid $17000 out of pocket yes 17k! I said I thought our deductible was zero well it is! BUT This is called and out of pocket maximum which they require before they will cover anything. What a total rip-off. Had I known this I would have added her to my own dental plan they made this sound like a good deal now if I change plans she would have to wait 6 months before they would cover the fillings. This company is a joke and they should be shut down for ripping people off with out right lies.

Absolutely disgusted with this plan and their services! My next step is contacting better business bureau! My 15 year old needs braces. Yes our plan is through medicaid so obviously I can not afford such high cost payments in dental care for his braces. He RECIEVED a referral for over crowding. I called liberty to see who he can go through. I was told braces are covered and that the closest Ortho was over an hour away. I take my son this past Monday to be seen. The Ortho called me today to tell me that Liberty had denied his claim. I call back the insurance company to see what the reason was for. I was told that liberties personal dentist reviewed the claim and because the problems with his over crowding do not keep him from being able to chew is why he was denied?!? You have got to be kidding me!!! So now my child will have crooked teeth because he is able to chew? This insurance company is absolute TRASH!!! Go else where! They will tell you they cover something just to turn around and deny a claim for a child!!!

Crappy coverage. Was just told they’ll pay for a filling, but not the lidocaine to numb it before drilling!? WTF? Previously, they grudgingly agreed to pay $34 of my total $2000 root canal bill. It wasn’t worth the trouble of filling the paperwork, so the dentist just waived the $34.

They wait until days before procedures to let you know theyve denied it. They think they know your health better than you do and want to decide what's right for you even tho YOU AND YOUR DOCTOR know your plan better than some weasle at a desk pushing no on every claim. Absolutely worst dental insurance I've ever experienced. Total trash. Guess you cant expect much from something that's government funded. TRASH

I wish I could give ZERO stars. This insurance is the worse. They accept very few dental providers and will not approve any out of network for 75 miles!!! Who can drive 1 hour for an appointment! This is absurd. I have multiple children, and have a job. There is no way possible they can expect people to drive an hour for an appointment, an hour + for the actual procedure and then an hour home In pain after a procedure. Absolutely ridiculous. They will not work with you. I am highly upset!

I had to give them 1 star cause there’s not a lower rate. Absolutely the worst thing ever. I’ve spent 24hrs on the phone with them. Even did a 3way chat with the dentist and have been denied at every step. Denials such as u can’t get a partial but a removable denture. Which is a partial. Just the worst dental ever. I’m a single mother and pay for my insurance yet have not been able to use it at all. Stay away from this

No one seems to accept the insurance and the places that do will not answer the phone or are closed. It has been nine months now and I still haven’t been able to make an appointment. I know COVID plays a huge factor in why but it’s an emergency. There had to be someone out there that can help me. Out of 30 Dental offices liberty provided to contact only two have answered my calls and they weren’t accepting new patients 😒 That’s INSANE!!!

I am manic depressive bipolar. I had a front tooth removed. I tried getting a replacement. I was denied. I did an appeal stating I had a previous suicide attempt but that didn't matter. I even provided dental evidence about the harm of not replacing a tooth. I was still denied. It's part of my Medicare Advantage Plan and I'm on a fixed income.
