Five Dental Plan Types

There are five Humana dental plans, each offering different kinds of benefits:

  • Dental Value
  • Dental Loyalty Plus
  • Dental Preventive Plus
  • Dental Savings Plus
  • Complete Dental

Humana’s Dental Value plan covers preventive services 100 percent after the copay. It also offers discounts when patients receive dental services from an in-network provider that are as high as 25 percent. There are no waiting periods.

Humana’s Dental Loyalty Plus plan offers in-network dental coverage for 100 percent of preventive care, 40-70 percent of basic services, and 20-50 percent of major services. The percentages increase to the maximum indicated at the third year of being on the plan. There are also no waiting periods.

Humana’s Dental Preventive Plus plan offers 100 percent coverage for preventive services and 50 percent coverage for basic dental care after the deductible is met. It also provides in-network discounts for major dental work, like oral surgery. There is only a six-month waiting period for basic services.

Humana’s Dental Savings Plus plan does not have any waiting periods. It covers cleanings and exams at 20-40 percent. It also allows its members access to in-network discounts for basic, major, and orthodontic services. It even has discounts for prescriptions. This plan offering is great for those looking at dental savings plans instead of more traditional dental plans.

Humana’s Complete Dental plan offers the most comprehensive coverage. Preventive services are covered at 100 percent. Basic services are covered at 80 percent after the deductible is met. Major services are covered at 50 percent once the deductible is met. There are waiting periods of six months for basic services and one year for major services. These waiting periods can be waived with proof of prior insurance.

Great Website

Customers can receive quotes, view dental benefits and plan availability, and find in-network dentists on the Human website. Since many of Humana’s dental discounts are only available in-network, this is a useful tool.

I signed up for the c550 plan . Went to great expressions first cleaning was $440 for deep cleaning not covered. Then crown filling month. Not covered didn't pay a penny. I paid $880 now getting bill $350 since Humana didn't pay anything. I filed a complaint with the GA attorney general against great expressions but after 6 months I get a statement today showing that Humana paid $0 so calling Monday to find out why Humana didn't pay a penny and then cancelling my dental insurance and signing up with Delta dental.

I have a 3 fold answer here. We have a PPO which includes Medical, vision, hearing and dental. We have tried to use the dental in the past for simple things like an xray and reglue of a loose crown and been denied ANY coverage. (Not even a percentage) So at the end of 2023 I called our local Humana rep to find a better dental policy because the current one wasn't worth the paper it was written on. She asked for the policy nilumbe and looked it up only to report it was I deed very good coverage. 3000 in an account to use however needed toward noncosmetic dental services. We did get a comprehensive list of in-network providers in a 4 County area only to find out it was severely outdated (several years outdated) so those 117,000 dentists on that list as if the end of 2023......I'll bet 40% or more have moved on. So we went to an oit of network provider when we were assured our fees would be covered. And they were much to our happy surprise. In rolls 2024 ( 45 days difference from service dates in 2023) We received a new updates of coverages for 2024 over 2023's with comparisons. 2024 according to our Humama Rep, was the same across the board coverage with an additional 1000 available. Out if network coverage was the same because there is a shortage of innetwork providers. It all flies apart when I get predeterminations and denials in the mail for services already provided AND COVERED IN FULL in 2023 for 2 different teeth. The next 4 teeth are covered at less than 50% but no one can tell me why. I have spent a couple hours on the phone with customer service and she finally gets it but can't answer me as to what the problem is or how to fix it. All I know is the coverage amounts are the same (0$ copay) for crowns in or out of network, yet I have a 55% COPAY. Their terminology in the booklet is Copay. The terminology used over the phone by them was ' out of network, amount due by policy holder'.. My 2024 summary of benefits and disclosures shows no asterisks telling me there is fine print to go read somewhere. That the 0$ copay isn't really 0$ copay. That there is a penalty for out of network users even though their literature states quite the contrary. The other part of this review is their medical coverage. It is out of this world. 2 life threatening hospitalizations both with extensice surgeries and our out of pocket expenses were next to nothing. Including transport by ambulance from 1 hospital to another for critical Care. That part of the policy has been a literal lifesaver. My concern is their contracted amounts are so very small, almost shamefully small, I cant help but wonder if hospitals will begin dropping them. This also includes a lung cancer scare that came up from a preoperative chest xray. We have seen good Dr's and gotten good care and 1/4 rly screenings for a very affordable copay. The 3rd part is the hearing aid provisions. There is a copay. 299 per ear for the best aids available. Blue tooth included. After more than 2 decades going without, I didn't realize what I was missing. I am hoping the dental problems get solved. Customer service has been comprehensive and friendly. I believe there has been a huge mistake made when the company reprinted their 2024 updates. Will they honor their word? Let's find out. I will be without the ability to chew if not. Thank you for your time.

On January 18, 2024 I contacted Humana Dental Insurance Company to get an estimate (they call it a predetermination) for a routine dental visit since my dentist is out-of-network. My dentist supplied the exact insurance codes and charges to Humana. On February 26, 2024 Humana informed me that the predetermination showed that Humana would pay 100% of my dental visit. I wanted documentation in writing that showed I would owe nothing and had the representative email me the predetermination EOB showing that I would owe nothing which I received. The agent also gave me a case reference number. In the notes for the call she documents that I was told repeatedly that I would owe nothing. I went to the dentist on March 25, 2024 and had the exact procedures as submitted in the predetermination. The dentist billed the exact same amounts from the predetermination. The claim was processed on March 31, 2024 and showed that I owe $52. I called on April 1, 2024 and spoke to an agent who could see that I had been told I would owe nothing (see case reference number above) but said I would need to complete the Grievance Form in order to get the claim corrected. As a member I have spent hours on the phone with Humana and the dentist office to ensure that the predetermination would be correct. I was assured repeatedly by Humana that I would owe nothing. Yet the claim was processed in conflict with the predetermination despite the predetermination having the exact same information. What good is getting a predetermination if the claim gets processed with a different result despite the information being the same? I have filed a grievance with Humana but still had to pay $376 out-of-pocket and am waiting for Humana to honor their estimate and refund me the entire $376 I paid.

Humana pays for everything for my dental. I get my teeth cleaned every 6 months and have a normal dental checkup every once in awhile and I pay for nothing. Just recently, I was told I needed to get my wisdom teeth taken out and humana has outlined the plan and costs for the surgery and consultation and I still pay nothing. Dental care can just be so expensive and on top of all the other stuff people have to pay for, some people may have to just cut that aspect out completely. To have an amazing dental insurance like Humana pay for such expensive things is great. I believe Humana definitely has the best dental care.

Dental insurance is a must in life today. The cost of procedures is huge if you don't have it. Humana Dental works great for me and they cover a great many things so I don't have to worry about being covered. Be it a tooth ache or cleaning, they never let me down. Thanks!!

Cancelled me without so much as a letter or phone call when we forgot our card had expired on automatic payments; paid to reinstate with a fee later. I had to have an emergency tooth extraction, which I was sent a bill for from Humana. They later called my dentist stating that my insurance had been cancelled at the time of the removal and demanding the money back. Absolutely atrocious company with terrible customer service and communication. Liars.

Terrible insurance company. Everytime I have a dentist appointment they give the dentist the run around and 99% of the time they make me have separate insurance even though we bought the family plan. Definitely will be switching dental insurance. My dentist recommends Delta dental. I heard they are really good and don't give problems like Humana does.

False Advertising - Don't do it. Off Shore customer service. You can barely understand them. I get different answers every time I call. They look for ways to deny coverage. Humana Dental advertises that there are no waiting periods if you had 12 months of continuous coverage. We had coverage for 15 years. It ended on the 31st of the month 2 weeks later we selected Humana, particularly because we were told that there were no waiting periods. The representative told us that we qualified for no waiting period. Then 6 months later, when my daughter needed surgery, Humana declined to pay our claim saying that we did not have continuous coverage. They are a fraud. It was a bait and switch.

My insurance company closed and Humana bought their policies. OMG what a mistake. We had GREAT insurnce with Delta Care and Humana can't hold a camera to them. No copay for off visits, now $15. $20 to the specialist, now $40. Humana did call me to see how I liked the specialist who pulled my tooth and I told them he was okay. When they asked what my copay was I told them $50 and that's when I found out it should only be $40. She called them while I held on the phone and they said that extra $10 was for rubber gloves, glasses or face shields, anything they use on only one patient. And a portion goes towards lab coats. I went back to my PCP dentist for my consult on what to do next and they charged me $129 on my way out. I told them I didn't pay for consultations and they said this was an extended consult. And they want me to get a deep cleaning. With my insurance (Humana) its $700....that's my copay. No thank you. I changed dentists.

One of your sales representative sold me a supplemental dental plan for $40 a month. He said that the additional coverage would be $2,000. To avoid any misunderstandings, I had him repeat “ADDITIONAL “ coverage. When it came time to pay, Humana simply said “Sorry “, the “Additional “ coverage is not really additional, it replaced what you originally had. The are standing by a dishonest sales rep, Steve G, and to this day, they have not paid the increased coverage. Be careful when you are dealing with Humana

My dentist got my crown preapproved by calling Humana. Crown was put on, claim was denied. I'm now in my 5th month of trying to get Humana to cover the claim. In one of the many calls with them, the agent asked me to send my policy verbiage to her to show where the crown was covered...I did. Disturbing they can't find their own documentation, online on their system like I can, but OK, they finally apologized and told me it would be paid. They even acknowledged preapproving the work with my dentist! A month later, the dentist still hasn't been paid. Humana AWOL and now asking me to file a grievance to get it paid, which I did. Six weeks later, no response to the grievance. Humana is a big behemoth of a company who doesn't have any process for doing what their supposed to do, systems that don't tell them what they cover, and people who promise to contact you in 2-3 days who don't. I'll be changing providers, to ANYBODY else.

Beware: We signed up for Humana Dental Smart Choice on the AHCA Marketplace. IT WAS A MISTAKE! After 4 phone calls over 2 days, I finally was able to reach someone I could understand and that could understand me, to conclude the plan highlights listed for Humana on the Marketplace search, IS VERY MISLEADING AND HIDES CLEAR DENTAL PROCEDURES THEY DO NOT COVER. In the highlights, it says Maximum Out of Pocket is $375 per person. Not until you dig far down into the details can you find WRITTEN VERY CONFUSINGLY that this does not apply to root canals, bridges and crowns. It turns out, this insurance plan does not cover those in any possible way. Even though, I would consider those dental procedures and you would consider those dental procedures, Humana does not consider those dental procedures. Thus a $1100 crown repair I needed is not reduced, limited or affected in any way by this Humana Dental coverage plan, we wasted money on.

Humana Dental was a terrible experience. After waiting the required almost two month waiting period and waiting for time for a cleaning, I tried to schedule with the HMO Dentist they signed me up with only to receive no return calls after 3 attempts. After Humana agreed to let me bypass the waiting period for a dentist change, Humana signed me with 2 other Dentists that would also not accept the Humana HMO Dental. No Dentists in our area accept it and we paid 8 months of premiums before learning this due to their waiting periods and fraudulent online provider list.

My company changed dental insurance coverage for their employees and why they picked Humana, I'll never know. The copays were high, the reps weren't the friendliest people I'd ever talk to, the dentist charged me an extra $10 copay to cover the cost of his clear glasses and rubber gloves and who knows what else. The consultation was supposed to be included but when I left the office and they said $129, I asked about the "no deductible" clause and was told this was more of an extended appointment. I still have the insurance but also purchased my own since the company was paying for Humana.
