In 1956, Security Service Federal Credit Union opened its doors with eight members and $25 in deposits. The credit union was founded as a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative to serve the fiscal needs of the members of the U.S. Air Force Security Service Command and their families. Since those humble beginnings, the credit union has expanded to include not only military members but a large and diverse number of members from companies, organizations and geographic areas throughout the southwestern United States in its field of membership. Security Service is the eighth largest credit union in the country, serving more than 700,000 members worldwide. There are now more than 2,600 ways to qualify for membership. The accounts they currently offer are:
  • Checking Overview
  • Security Service Power Checking (slightly increased interest rates based on Where you live)
  • Security Service Power Youth Checking
  • Basic Savings Account
  • Youth Savings Account

  • Traditional CD

Security Service Federal Credit Union has some good rates available for their CDs, checking, and savings account, even at the basic level; in comparison to other credit unions that offer on interest tiers that take a very long time to see dividends.

Membership

The Bad

  • Credit cards

Credit Cards

There isn't much to go on that is really bad for Security Service Federal Credit Union. The only thing that might not be appealing is the lack of options for credit cards; they only offer three kinds with only a few reward options available. If you are looking for more money back per transaction or more points this might not be the best card choice for you. Also, the App for Apple devices doesn't have very good ratings, but the Android app does very well, and that is just being picky.

The Bottom Line

This is a great credit union! Security Service Federal Credit Union has a ton of branches available; they provide tons of information that let you get to know their company as whole and it seems they really strive for perfection and high customer satisfaction. They have a high amount of assets and customers and that allows them the freedom for better interest rates for their customers. They have some of the best rates available in the West with online banking available and access to thousands of ATMs across the nation, so even if you leave the state you can still get access to your finances when you need to. This would be a very smart credit union to invest with; they are everything a customer should want in a bank. They are growing and expanding into other states, and that is always a great indicator of customer satisfaction and demand for great financial options.

The loan was in my wife's name but I was making the payment. My wife and I called and asked for me to get access to the account so i could take car of things with their customer service. I was told there was no way I could get permanent access to the account - if I wanted to do anything with customer service, she would have to call each time and give verbal access. I had to skip a payment during an unusually difficult financial time and they said okay but then took the payment out anyway, causing a chain reaction of overdraft and late fees. They have been very difficult to work/deal with. Not very customer friendly.

I have my car payment through Security Service. They have a very diligent customer service department, and they'll remind you about your payment even before it's due!
