Various Initiatives

Save Our Canyons has various key issues in which it focuses its efforts. Some of these issues/initiatives include the following:

  • Public land protection — Save Our Canyons believes that protecting public land is something that can’t be done alone, and through group/community efforts the organization has secured permanent protection for the Bonanza Flat.
  • Ski area projects — A focus on urbanization and man-made conveyances that disrupt the natural Wasatch environment, primarily due to ski area expansions.
  • Watershed protections — Through the Central Wasatch National Conservation & Recreation Area Act (CWNCRA), Save Our Canyons seeks to protect the water that is used by a vast majority of Salt Lake Valley residents.
  • Land use planning — To protect the Wasatch mountains, canyons, and foothills, Save Our Canyons engages on federal, state, county, and city levels to create conversation about land use.
  • Recreation access and transportation — A focus on supporting more visitors and locals visiting the Wasatch mountains, while helping reduce traffic and pollution.

Save Our Canyons Volunteer Opportunities

Save Our Canyons relies upon volunteer efforts to protect the Wasatch mountains, canyons, and foothills. Volunteer opportunities are flexible, allowing you to provide as many volunteer hours as you’re able throughout the week. Volunteers will primarily help at community events, but Save Our Canyons also has four different volunteer positions:

  • Communication and outreach volunteer
  • Policy volunteer
  • Wasatch wilderness and stewardship
  • Save Our Canyons office help

You can sign up as a volunteer online, or you can choose to become a Save Our Canyons member or donor — all applications/donations can be submitted on the Save Our Canyons website.

To inspire children and youth to become stewards of the Wasatch front, the organization has the Save Our Canyons Kids (SOCKids) program, creating volunteer and educational opportunities for youth throughout the Salt Lake Valley. SOCKids is made possible solely through grant funding and donations.
