Haiti Health Initiative (HHI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the public health needs of rural Haitians by providing education and services in primary health care, dental care, public health, and nutrition. HHI supports current medical, dental, and other healthy living practices and promotes sustainable and culturally appropriate change by collaborating with local and international partners. HHI’s goal is to first uncover the root of problems, then use that knowledge to work with Haitian communities to “implement sustainable water treatment projects, improve nutritional opportunities through agricultural expansion, and train local medical and dental providers to provide sustainable care for those in their communities.”

Provides Many Services

Haiti Health Initiative has a large goal: to improve the health of Haitian people to ultimately allow them to live successfully and self-sustainably. To reach that goal, HHI covers many aspects of healthy living. Its programs cover and improve life in the following areas:

  • Agriculture
  • Dental
  • Water
  • Ophthalmology
  • Nutrition
  • Medical
  • Education

Haiti Health Initiative creates plans and works alongside communities such as Timo, Haiti, to give Haitians the opportunity to grow and learn how to support their community.

Environmentally Aware

As part of its dedication to healthy living, HHI help Haitians while keeping the environment in mind. For example, HHI is in the process of building a school in Timo, Haiti, and the building itself is incredibly environmentally friendly. To minimize its footprint on the land, the school was built more vertically than horizontally. Additionally, HHI plans to use solar energy for lighting and power, the dehydrator, and the hot water.

Several Partners

Haiti Health Initiative has partnered with several other organizations to increase efficiency, including the following:

  • ARUP
  • Vitamin Angels
  • Globus Relief
  • AmeriCares Medical Outreach
  • Kingsway Charities
  • Map International
  • Country Eye Center
  • Dream Host

Transparency

This organization hides nothing, and works to be upfront regarding goals and how it plans to accomplish those goals. Online, HHI has set goals for sustainable development in a simple diagram, which includes things like no poverty, zero hunger, quality education, gender equality, affordable and clean energy, and clean water and sanitation.

The Bad

  • Limited Publicity
  • Location Specific

Limited Publicity

Although it may have great ambitions, the Utah-based organization has not received as much publicity as it deserves. Not enough people are aware of what HHI is doing, making it difficult for the organization to grow.

Location Specific

Haiti Health Initiative hopes to help individuals in Haiti to improve, and specifically individuals in rural Haiti. While this is a noble goal, it does mean that the scope of the organization is narrow: you will not find HHI internationally, and its services will be reserved for those in Haiti alone.

The Bottom Line

Overall, Haiti Health Initiative is a noteworthy nonprofit with great tools and plans to improve the lives and health of those in Haiti. The organization has many partners and worthy motives. However, it does not have the added bonus of worldwide publicity to help its efforts.

I went to Haiti on a dental trip and it was amazing how many people we were able to help in 9 short days. The people there have next to nothing, and we were able to help them with their healthcare. I think that above 85% had never seen a dentist before and many had probably never taken care of their teeth at all. We were able to do amazing work in the short time. For anyone who is considering donating money, time, or talents to HHI, I highly recommend it. Your time and money will be well spent in this worthy endeavor, there is little to no waste as far as I could see, all went right to the people of Haiti.
