The company employs over 7,200 people across the nation. While Safeco provides a relatively comprehensive product, in terms of their service area, there are some serious limitations to the platform as well.

Consumers should be able to put together the exact insurance policy to meet their specific needs. In fact, Safeco has more options than most of their competitors, and they allow customers to build their own policy by combining these varied coverage options, which offers a high degree of customization.
Safeco provides hundreds of customer reviews on their own website. This includes many one star reviews, which shows the company's commitment to transparency and honesty. However, what makes this even better is that Safeco has replied to many of the one star reviews in an attempt to resolve complaints, providing contact information and answering questions. Potential customers should take this as a good sign. Safeco is not only willing to address negative reviews, but they actively attempt to reconcile them.
Diminishing Deductible is one interesting feature that the company offers. Basically, if a policyholder remains claim-free, the collision deductible goes down by $100 each year for a possible maximum of $500. They have a great roadside assistance program that is available around the clock through an 877 phone number, and the website offers several payment options for premiums, including a paperless option.
Safeco also offers a Single Loss Deductible, which means if your vehicle and your home are both damaged in the same incident, you only have to pay one deductible. The example given on the website is that if a tree fell in the yard and hit both your car and house, Safeco would waive the auto deductible once the home deductible was paid. This can save the policyholder a significant amount of money, and it's a great feature that every company should have.
Safeco's auto insurance rates are not particularly impressive, averaging $117/month. In fact, a side-by-side comparison of insurance quotes put Safeco higher than average in terms of cost. Combined with the fact that they don't offer as many discounts as many their competitors, this does not bode well for people trying to save money. There are more affordable options out there.
Discount options are not as extensive or numerous as some of their competitors, though they do offer standard discounts like safe driving and low mileage. By combining an auto insurance policy with a homeowners policy it is possible to save up to 15 percent, and while this is not bad, there are other insurance companies with more discounts and deeper savings.
Safeco has accumulated thousands of complaints across numerous websites, including their own, about the frustration of their claims process. First of all, claims cannot be reported online, which puts Safeco out of step with the innovative practices of many other insurance companies. Instead, an 800 number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Though claims cannot be filed online, they can be tracked online, which is good. However, many of the complaints are directed at the company's ongoing lack of follow-up about the claims process. Hundreds of people have complained about unprofessional behavior, lack of response, unreturned phone calls, incorrect information and unanswered messages. These types of complaints are prevalent enough and widespread enough that it is worth pointing out.

You better hope you're never in an accident with someone that uses Safeco Insurance. After highway patrol immediately named the Safeco insurance driver liable for the accident, I was without a vehicle for two and half months because Safeco refused to accept liability. They finally agreed to pay for repairs which I was totally happy with, but then switched claims representatives (reason unknown) and declared the car at a total loss. Surprise, surprise.. Safeco undervalued my car by at least $1,000. It has been one headache after another dealing with this company; their unprofessionalism knows no bounds.
Safeco is an affordable company to have teenage drivers on.

We have had Safeco for our car, home, and boat insurance for the last five years. I have had two auto claims, and both have been handled fairly and to my satisfaction quickly.

Good service, fast claims , and it didn't matter that the accident happened in a different state while we were on vacation. They did everything that they said they would and went out of the way to figure out all the logistics of the situation. That was a huge relief to me.
It's not great but it was the best price
Horrible company. We had insurance for 4 years. Our vehicle was stolen and vandalized and they sent us our car back with no motor no good and did not cover it. We had full coverage including comprehensive for 3 vehicles under them. They are taking money and not paying out. Stay away from them. And the rep in charge of investigation was horrible.

We have been with Safeco Auto for 8 years. They are good and affordable (course we also have our home owners bundle which saves $). We have had to make a couple claims. Once with a broken windshield and once for being rear-ended. I wasn't too happy with the claims adjuster for the rear-end collision, to be honest, I didn't feel that she had my best interest. I also felt she was trying to cheat us out of the best repair. But everything worked out fine. With the windshield I went where I felt comfortable and then was reimbursed.
I've been a client of Safeco for just under a year because I moved. I had to switch insurance carriers and found that Safeco offered a lower auto premium than I previously had with Allstate. When we first signed up with Safeco, we were offered a 5% discount if we participated in a 90 days safe track device driving program. Once the 90 days were completed, the discount increased to 20% - we were good, safe drivers. The website is easy to maneuver setting up auto pay. Making payments online EFT which is a discount too, bundled with the home owner policy. All customer service reps were very pleasant that I encountered during this process. We're saving over $300 annually with Safeco vs Allstate!
