Positive Reviews

Erie Insurance has received mostly positive reviews on BestCompany.com. Reviewers mention satisfaction with pricing, customer service, and coverage.

Competitive Coverage

You can find all of the typical auto insurance coverages through Erie Insurance: liability, collision, comprehensive, underinsured or uninsured motorist, personal injury protection, and medical payments.

ERIE's comprehensive coverage includes locksmith services. You can also benefit from glass repair and up to $350 coverage for personal items.

In addition to the standard offerings, you can find the following:

  • New car protection
  • Better car protection
  • Rideshare driver coverage
  • Roadside assistance
  • Travel expenses (food and lodging) resulting from a covered loss

These optional coverages add value to your policy. The new car and better car protection options allow you to replace a totaled car with a newer model according to the policy terms. Although other carriers offer similar options, they are not common.

Roadside assistance is a common offering for the industry, but it can be harder to find coverage for unexpected travel expenses. If you're on the road frequently, these coverages can be particularly valuable.

Erie Insurance offers coverage for people insuring themselves and their cars. You can also find coverage options for additional or replacement autos or trailers, motorcycles, and cars you don't own.

Offering some of these harder-to-find options makes Erie Insurance stand out in the industry.

Classic and Antique Car Coverage

If you have a classic or antique car, ERIE can help you meet your insurance needs. Although details regarding coverage options are limited, you can add classic car coverage to your ERIE policy for your regular care to manage everything from one account.

Pet Coverage

Pet owners can add coverage for their pets to their auto policy. If your pet is injured in an accident, you can receive up to $500 per pet with a maximum of $1,000.

Pet coverage can be difficult to find in an auto insurance policy, so this offering makes Erie Insurance advantageous for pet owners.

Helpful Discounts

Like most car insurance providers, ERIE offers many savings opportunities. You can benefit from the following discounts:

  • Safe driver
  • Car safety features (e.g. air bags, anti-theft, etc.)
  • Multiple cars
  • Multiple policies
  • Annual payment plan

These are commonly offered discounts for the industry. You can also get a discount if you don't use your car for 90 consecutive days or if you have young drivers living at home. For the young drivers discount, they must be under age 21 and unmarried.

Beyond discounts, ERIE's policies offer first accident forgiveness (after you've been a policyholder for three years) and a feature that lowers your deductible annually for each claims-free year (up to $500 total). These features are becoming more and more common in the industry.

Rate Protection Feature

ERIE's auto insurance offerings stand out because of its rate protection feature you can add to your policy. Adding this feature means that you'll avoid rate increases unless you're adding or removing a car from your policy or changing your address (parking location). However, adding this feature doesn't mean that you'll automatically pass underwriting when you renew your policy.

Although unique and helpful, this rate lock feature isn't available in all states and can have some variation by location.

ERIE AutoPlus®

When you're insuring your car, you can opt for ERIE Auto Plus®. This insurance product includes a diminishing deductible (which can be waived in some cases), coverage for transportation expenses, increased coverage limits, and a $10,000 death benefit if you or a relative die from an auto accident. ERIE's website advertises that this coverage costs up to $35 per year.

It's more common to see death benefits included with motorcycle insurance, so the inclusion in the auto insurance policy is another stand-out feature from Erie Insurance.

YourTurn®

On trend with the industry, Erie Insurance offers a driver monitoring program to encourage better driving habits. This program is called YourTurn®. You'll benefit from personalized suggestions and opportunities to earn cash every two weeks. You can even make it a friendly competition with your family members by sharing your scores.

Most insurers use their driver monitoring programs to offer discounts on premium rates. However, it's unclear if ERIE takes a similar approach.

The Bad

  • Regional Variation
  • Limited Availability

Regional Variation

You may find some variation in Erie Insurance's policy features depending on where you live. For example, some discounts are not available in North Carolina and Kentucky.

Keep these possible variations in mind as you learn more about what's offered in your area.

Limited Availability

Unfortunately, ERIE auto insurance isn't available throughout the United States. If you don't live in a state it serves, you'll need to find another auto insurance provider.

The Bottom Line

Erie Insurance offers many advantages to car insurance policyholders through its discounts, range of coverage options, and beneficial policy features.

You can find standard car insurance coverage, non-owner auto insurance, coverage for pets, classic car coverage, and more from ERIE.

You may also benefit from ERIE's discounts and savings features, many of which are common for the industry. In addition to these savings opportunities, you can add ERIE's rate protection feature that keeps your premium rate from fluctuating unless you add or remove cars or change where you keep your car. This feature has some variation by state and is not available in every state.

ERIE car insurance is worth exploring further if you live in one of the insurer's service areas.

Overall, responsive to consumer needs, though they still refuse to accept credit card payment for some policies. They need to get with the times and develop better and more consistent business practices. No issues with claims or adjusters.
