File and Track Claims

The claim system is easy and convenient to use. Policyholders can track and file their claim quickly and easily online. The tracking keeps each member updated on their claim status so they don't have to take the time and go through the hassle of calling in to get a status update.

Member Benefits

Being an AARP member provides you with a lot of easily obtainable benefits. For example, members can save up to 10 percent on monthly charges for wireless AT&T plans and up to 15 percent at Outback Steakhouse. Some of their other deals include a free donut with any large or extra-large beverage, easily printable savings coupons for groceries, $30 off an annual Zipcar membership, discount on the AARP Smart Driver course, online savings from top retailers, and more.

Education

AARP serves consumers with plenty of helpful tips and calculators on their website. They also have a live chat option so browsers who have questions that they want immediate answers to can have their questions answered quickly. For less urgent needs, members or consumers with questions can either email in their questions or call their provided telephone number.

The Bad

  • Undisclosed Pricing
  • Third-Party Insurance
  • Limited Discounts
  • Transparency Issues

Undisclosed Pricing

AARP has not disclosed its auto insurance pricing.

Third-Party Insurance

Car insurance with AARP is actually done through The Hartford. This can be confusing to some consumers. The Hartford is a provider of property and casualty insurance, group benefits, and mutual funds. They have been in business for around 205 years. When you request a quote, the quote will be generated through The Hartford. Moreover, all of your car insurance services will actually be done through The Hartford who is partnered with AARP. Again, this may be confusing to some.

Limited Discounts

Although they do provide a lot of discounts and savings deals, we could not find a pay in full discount. Most of their competitors offer this discount and a lot of consumers will probably look for this discount. However, if you are interested in obtaining a Pay in Full Discount, you could most likely talk to an AARP agent and work something out. Or they may actually provide this discount depending on the location.

Transparency Issues

They lack a little transparency whenever describing their coverage, benefits, and discounts. For example, on most of their discounts, they state that they provide "up to" a certain percentage. So although they list that they provide up to 15 percent off for having an anti-theft device, this could legally mean even just 1 percent. Consumers alike would agree that on being more straightforward and transparent about their benefits, coverages, and discount percentages and amounts would definitely be appreciated.

The Bottom Line

AARP with The Hartford caters a great service to consumers. There are a number of discounts that are offered to consumers, even though it does depend on the location. Consumers will always appreciate more transparency, and AARP has room for improvement in that area. It would be helpful if they listed quotes on their site, without having to submit too much personal information. The words "up to" could also be used less. AARP has been in business for over 50 years and The Hartford has been in the auto insurance industry for over 200. Their combined experience is definitely an asset to their members. Overall, because each member gets good coverage at a good price, considering AARP would be a wise choice.

DonnaM Montclair, CA

AARP you should be ashamed .....I have been with the Hartford for 15 years I had a problem with a payment going through due to my Debit card being replaced with a new card I paid it on the 2nd of February. I was not aware that the old Card number was on the site the payment was not honored due to the change. My policy was canceled immediately because of this misunderstanding when I called the Hartford on the 19th of February to Re-instate after I got a letter from them dated February 11th They would not Re-instate unless I paid the full balance for the whole year of close to $500.00 I asked if I could make a payment or even half of the amount they said no because I did not contact them soon enough. Remember the letter was dated the 11th of February which means it still needed to be mailed so the 13th or 14th it would have arrived. So 7 days or under is the time frame that you are supposed to contact them I guess. I have never had an accident or any problems always paid my bill, again customer 15 years. In the past if there was a problem with a credit card it was no problem to reinstate and take the monthly payment (which happened once before a few years ago) lucky I had a credit card or else I would have not been able to reinstate the policy and been left without insurance. This is totally unreasonable as I started with the policy because of AARP thus Hartford deals with older people who may not be able to contact them in the time frame of under a week due to illness or family illness plus most older people are on a fixed income and may not be able to pay the whole year off. I don't know what happened with this company they used to be caring & helpful but not any more they are now nothing more than another greedy insurance company that cares more for profit then for people needless to say after this and when my policy is up for renewal I will not be continuing with the Hartford and will not recommend anyone else to do business with them.
