SingleHop is a relatively small IT company that is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded in 2006 by Zak Boca and Dan Ushman. The two had founded another hosting platform, midPhase, in 2003. They created SingleHop to expand upon their former company's services to include dedicated server hosting. They offer public and private clouds, bare metal dedicated servers, and managed services.
- Customizable services
- Outstanding web application firewall
This company is all about catering to the customer's needs. Almost everything is variable - storage, memory, bandwidth, number of hard drives, and management preferences, to name a few. SingleHop's services are hybrid capable, meaning dedicated servers can work alongside the cloud servers. Apps and workloads can be built on a case by case basis. The company's extensive options for customization at all levels of web hosting send the message that they want to cater to the needs and diversity of customers with a personalized product, rather than make people pay for something they won't use.
We are impressed with SingleHop's overall security, especially the web application security. The Web Application Firewall (WAF) doesn't just allow or block traffic, but actually understands the app traffic that is monitored and intercepts attacks. New signatures from internal and external sources are continually updated. Customers can also receive additional monitoring, tuning, and incident response services with their hosting plans.
- No money-back guarantee
- No shared web hosting
- No VPS
No Money-back Guarantee
All payments to SingleHop are final, meaning there's no money back guarantee and no free trial for dedicated hosting. The company does have a system in place to reimburse customers for certain percentage amounts of downtime and power outages. However, the customer needs to take the initiative to report the incident and request compensation within seven days of the outage. We would have more confidence in the "100 percent uptime guarantee" if all subscribed customers were automatically awarded a credit when the company falls short of their lofty promise. Most companies in the industry offer a minimum of a 30 day money-back guarantee. We would like to see SingleHop offer something similar.
No Shared or VPS Hosting
SingleHop offers several web hosting options, and strives to customize their services to fit their customers needs. However, SingleHop could offer more options for their customers. We would like to see HostGator extend their services to include shared and VPS web hosting options. This provides more options and customization for customers who would benefit more from plans that included these hosting options.
The Bottom Line
SingleHop has a decent reputation, competitive specs, and lots of flexibility for a personalized hosting plan. We really like the products' customizable infrastructure, trusted security features, and multi-device access options. While we wish the company's service-level agreement were a bit more liberal, overall we think SingleHop is a good option for dedicated server hosting.
