VyprVPN is owned and operated by Golden Frog.  They have been offering VPN service since 2010 and are headquartered in Switzerland.  Customer support is available 24/7/365 and based in the United States.  They have developed proprietary software, called Chameleon, which allows users to combat VPN blocking which is becoming more common, especially in countries which are known for censoring their internet.

At the time of signing up for a free trial, users must select which of VyperVPN's three service levels that they want and enter their preferred billing method and account numbers, etc. from those which VyprVPN accepts. If the user does not cancel their free trial before the end of the third day, their account is automatically upgraded to a paid account and their payment method is charged for the first month of service.

VyprVPN accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, JCB and Diners Club International in addition to Alipay and PayPal.

VyprVPN does not offer any type of money-back guarantee.

Encryption Type

Each of VyprVPN's plans includes PPTP as the baseline encryption protocol, and the only one which is available to subscribers of the Basic VyprVPN plan. While it is a good method, it is not the best. Experts agree that OpenVPN is the most secure of currently-available encryption protocols. OpenVPN is available for the Pro and Premier plans and is recommended by the Review Team. iOS devices are not compatible with OpenVPN protocols, but the L2TP and IPsec protocols deliver similar results for iOS users, with L2TP being the closest to OpenVPN. These protocols are available for subscribers of the Premier and Pro plans only.

VyprVPN is transparent in their policies and gives explicit examples online about their collection, storage and destruction of customer data.

VyprVPN keeps some data for 30 days, which includes:

  • User's source IP address
  • VyprVPN IP address used for sessions
  • Total traffic (which is unlimited and unthrottled)
  • Start/stop times of VPN sessions

There are several reasons which session data is kept by Golden Frog, which include - troubleshooting, billing issue resolution, maintaining compliance with the TOS and handling crimes which have been committed while users were online with a VPN session.

With all of this, it is important to know data which is not kept or logged when using VyprVPN tunnels to connect to the internet. User traffic and communications are not collect, nor is a deep inspection of traffic (unless requested by the user for firewall information).

Customer Support

The customer service department for Gold Frog's VyprVPN excels in both availability and quality. The company offers several methods for which customers to receive assistance - online chat, knowledge base and online ticket system. Each of the methods work well, with response times for the online chat being minimal, if not instant. The ticket system yields a response within hours in most cases.

Extra features

VypyrVPN has extra features which are available for their Premier and Pro subscribers such as a powerful firewall, the NAT Firewall. This firewall blocks a full spectrum of hacker and bot attacks, which are more likely to occur when using a wireless router to connect to the internet.

VyprVPN also offers a proprietary software product, Chameleon, which bypasses VPN blocking. As more people are using VPNs to connect to the internet and have access to sites which are blocked in certain countries, technology has increased to arrest VPN traffic and block it as well. With Chameleon, user traffic can pass through VPN software blocking products. Use of Chameleon is only available for subscribers of the Premier and Pro plans.

The Bad

  • Speed

The Review Team reports averages of VPN speed test results in order to illustrate the speeds which may be possible. Independent speed tests for VyprVPN fluctuated more than for any other company which the Review Team reviewed. Complicating the results are claims made by VyprVPN that they offer the fastest VPN networks available. Averaged independent speed test results do not support this claim. The average speed of downloads on VyprVPN is 8.85 Mbps and the average upload time is 2.80 Mbps. It is notable that in the raw data, there were several servers which performed extremely poorly, while others returned results which were more aligned with industry averages. For purposes of comparison, the average in the United States for download/upload speeds are 20.8 Mbps and 5.2 Mbps, respectively.

The Bottom Line

VyprVPN offers their customers innovative features and the ability to select a plan based upon the number of devices which they currently own and want to cover. The company, while keeping some data is forthright with the use of this information and regularly destroys customer data which they have held for internal purposes. The company's trial period and lack of any sort of refund is not as good as many other companies, and the averages from independent speed tests are lower than many of their competitors. The company's basic subscription is not recommended by the Review Team, primarily because of its lack of access to servers with OpenVPN protocols. The Premier and Pro plans are both recommended and provide protection and security for home users.

Have to disagree regarding speed: Vypr is one of the fastest VPN around, most locations getting 90% of my ISP's speed.
