Mathnasium was created in 2002, inspired by the work of math educator Larry Martinek. Over 40 years ago he decided to find a better way to teach children math and created the Mathnasium Method. Mathnasium provides in-person tutoring for elementary through high school students. An online version of the service is available in a limited number of states. Mathnasium says it helps change their clients' fear of math as well as make improvement in their understanding of the subject.

The Good

  • Grade Levels
  • Customized Instruction
  • In-Person Tutoring

Grade Levels

Mathnasium offers tutoring for second graders through high school seniors. This is a wide range, especially compared with competitors. Parents of all ages can come to Mathnasium if their child needs extra assistance with math.

Customized Instruction

Mathnasium focuses on the Mathansium Method created by Larry Martinek. Students take customized assessments to determine their specific learning needs. Tutors then form an individualized learning plan to help students master key concepts. Students are taught a variety of strategies to meet their unique learning style. The Mathnaisum Method uses a combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile, and written techniques to help struggling students master math. Furthermore, they offer both enrichment, for advanced students, and remediation, for struggling students.

In-Person Tutoring

Mathanisum offers one-on-one tutoring at their learning centers. Students receive individual instruction face-to-face. This may be especially advantageous for younger students.

The Bad

  • Limited Online Availability
  • Pricing
  • Tutor Availability
  • Limited Number of Subjects
  • Tutor Qualification

Limited Online Availability

Mathnasium only offers online tutoring to students in Alaska, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, Vermont, and Wyoming. Students who do no live near a Mathnasium learning center, or in one of the aforementioned states, may not have access to this company. They also do not advertise any specific technological tools for their online learning sessions.

Pricing

Mathnasium charges an initial registration fee of $198. The hourly price varies by location, however their average price range is $300-$400 per month. This price is higher than many competitors.

Tutor Availability

Mathnasium's business hours range from 2:30-7:30 p.m. These hours may not work for every student or circumstance. Many competitors offer 24/7 tutoring services. Further, Mathnasium does not disclose whether or not they allow their customers to choose their tutors.

Limited Number of Subjects

Mathnasium specializes specifically in math. Students who need assistance in other subjects will have to look elsewhere for tutoring services.

Tutor Qualification

Mathnasium requires tutors to pass rigorous math screening tests. However, they do not specify any details about the training, specifically in tutoring methods, that their instructors receive. They also do not reveal the qualifications necessary to become a tutor.

The Bottom Line

Mathnasium may be a good fit for students who struggle specifically with math. They offer in-person tutoring with specialized curriculum for each student. However, they are only available for online tutoring in a few states. Students who need help in other subjects will need to seek alternative tutoring companies. Mathnasium is also more expensive than many competitors, so customers should research other companies before deciding if Mathnasium is the best fit for their needs.

Stephen C. Leonard Minco, OK

Micheal and his well trained staff are very well liked by the kids they help learn to love math. Our daughter has become more confident in her math skills and her comprehension level has risen greatly due to Michael and his staff. We highly recommend mathnasium and encourage you to give them a chance to answer any questions. You will find your doubts are unwarranted as your child thrives as a result of their learning method. Emanon Provo, UT

Orem/Provo, Utah Mathnasium - Inexperienced college students run this center. They lack an understanding of child psychology and development. They also don't understand effective teaching methods and strategies.
