Florida Technical College (FTC) was founded in 1982 originally to provide post-secondary training in specialized business fields. Now, FTC offers Associate Degrees and Diploma Programs across a spectrum of fields. One unique and interesting feature to FTC is that each student will get a new iPad with e-books to replace textbooks. FTC is also nationally accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS).

The Good

  • Financial Aid
  • Graduation Rate
  • Job Placement Services

Financial Aid

Going to school can be expensive, so schools that offer more opportunities to cut fees get scored higher than colleges that don't. Florida Tehnical College is a great example of a school that offers ample ways to get their students financial assistance. Through FTC, students can take advantage of federal financial aid in addition to federal work-study programs that are offered.

Graduation Rate

Florida Technical's graduation rate comes in at 72% which is better than a majority of other trade colleges. This score was based on FTC's Medical Assistant Technician program from the 2014-2015 school year. It's important to note that this is not the average rate of all the programs at Florida Technical. Also, even though this is a great rate, there are still a few other schools that score even higher than 72%.

Job Placement Services

Florida Technical College also offers a great career service center where students can get help both online and in person. FTC recently introduced their Career Services Online Center where students can build their resume, search for jobs, practice interviews, contact the Career Services Representatives, and more. Even employers can sign up for this portal and post job and internship opportunities to the FTC students. This department also hosts a Professional Preparation Seminar where students can get even more help and training. Florida Technical's job placement program has proven to work as they also score 72% in their placement rate. Again, this number is based on the Medial Assistant Technical 2014-2015 program. This is a great number to see, so students can be confident when going to the career center in knowing they will get the best help possible.

The Bad

  • Number of Programs
  • Missing Information

Number of Programs

Currently, Florida Technical College only offers one trade program that they have recently added. The program is HVAC/R with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Students can get a certificate in this program in only 17 months. The courses associated with the HVAC/PLC program includes industrial safety, applied mathematics, digital electronics, codes and regulations, and more. Even though this is a great program to have, only offering one specialized program will not make the college very competitive with other trade colleges. Most trade schools will offer at least a few programs to choose from, so that puts FTC on the very bottom of the list.

Missing Information

Unfortunately, most trade colleges do not disclose all of their information online, and Florida Technical College falls in this same category. We could not find information on the cost of tuition and loan repayment default rates. Students can have issues with not finding specific numbers on how much they will end up paying for school and might explore other colleges. Florida Technical will earn a higher score by being willing to disclose these details and we encourage all schools and companies to share more information than not enough.

The Bottom Line

Florida Technical College is not a standout trade college, but they have some really good things going for them that could push them in that direction. Their graduation and job placement rate of 72% each shows that they are doing something right. Students are finishing their programs and getting jobs after graduation at FTC. However, students only have one option for a specialized program and that is in HVAC/R. The limitation in programs takes a hard hit on their Overall Score and only a handful of students will be attracted to FTC because of their limited options. Overall, FTC might only make sense if you're interested in HVAC and live close to a campus. Otherwise, we would recommend students to consider other choices as well to get a full idea of other possibilities.
