The Good

  • Lab Testing
  • Availability
  • Interpretation Services
  • Accreditations
  • Awards
  • Provider Experience
  • Free Resources
  • Documentation

Lab Testing

One challenge of getting virtual medical care is receiving services that must be done in person, such as lab testing. Some telemedicine companies can’t help with any of these in-person services. However, as of 2017, Doctor on Demand can refer its patients to a lab so they can receive diagnostic testing.

Availability

Doctor on Demand is available to patients any time of day, every day of the week, including on holidays.

Patients all across the United States can use Doctor on Demand. Even U.S. citizens who are travelling abroad can visit with a doctor through the telemedicine service, although they can’t get prescriptions until they’re back in the United States.

However, Doctor on Demand is not available in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

Interpretation Services

Doctor on Demand can provide ASL and other language translation for medical visits by appointment.

Accreditations

Doctor on Demand is HITRUST CSF certified, NCQA Credentialing/Recredentialing Certified, and URAC accredited.

URAC is a nonprofit accreditation organization that sets standards for quality of care, cybersecurity, online prescriptions, and patient privacy. HITRUST CSF certification means that Doctor on Demand has met the risk- and compliance-based standards of HITRUST CSF, which primarily deals with data security. NCQA Credentialing/Recredentialing certification deals with consumer protection and customer service. Meeting the NCQA standards means an organization is using industry best practices to credential and recredential healthcare professionals.

Awards

Doctor on Demand has won several awards recognizing its services, including a 2020 Big Innovation award, a 2019 UCSF Digital Health Award, and a Fierce Innovation Award. These awards speak to Doctor on Demand’s innovation and quality of telemedicine services.

Provider Experience

Doctor on Demand medical providers have an average of 15+ years of experience.

Free Resources

The Doctor on Demand website provides several free resources for visitors, including a blog with medical advice from doctors, a mental health assessment, and a COVID-19 assessment.

Documentation

Doctor on Demand can provide not only notes to excuse patients from work or school, but also emotional support animal letters, if appropriate.

The Bad

  • Time Limits
  • Prescription Limitations

Time Limits

Doctor on Demand is extremely transparent about pricing, listing exact prices on its website, before insurance, for each of its services. However, Doctor on Demand appointments have strict time limits, and as the patient’s allotted time expires, they’ll have to pay for an additional appointment at the same rate to continue speaking with the doctor.

A 15-minute medical consultation costs $75. A 25-minute psychology consultation costs $129. A 50-minute psychology consultation costs $179. An initial 45-minute psychiatry consultation costs $299. A 15-minute psychiatry follow-up appointment costs $129.

Prescription Limitations

While Doctor on Demand medical providers can prescribe many medicines, they can’t prescribe controlled substances, such as Xanax or Adderall.

The Bottom Line

Doctor on Demand, cofounded by “Dr. Phil,” has provided more than 3 million patient visits as of July 2020. The company’s more than 700 doctors have an average of  more than 15 years of experience.

Doctor on Demand has received numerous awards and accreditations, including HITRUST CSF certification, NCQA Credentialing/Recredentialing Certification, URAC accreditation, a 2020 Big Innovation award, a 2019 UCSF Digital Health Award, and a Fierce Innovation Award. These awards and accreditations should give potential customers confidence that the telemedicine company will safeguard their personal information, provide them excellent customer service, and maintain a staff of qualified medical professionals.

Like many other telemedicine companies, Doctor on Demand is available 24/7 and all across the United States. However, Doctor on Demand is not available in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

Also similar to other telemedicine companies, Doctor on Demand’s providers cannot prescribe controlled substances, such as narcotics, although they can prescribe a variety of other medicines as needed.

One way that Doctor on Demand sets itself apart from the competition is in its ability to refer patients to labs for in-person diagnostic testing. Doctor on Demand also provides interpretation services, including in ASL, for patients who need it.

Potential Doctor on Demand customers should note that the company’s virtual medical consultations come with strict time limits, and if they want to extend their visit, they’ll have to pay for a second visit at the same rate.

Those who are particularly concerned about data privacy would be well served by Doctor on Demand’s impressive certifications. Doctor on Demand is also a good choice for those who anticipate needing in-person lab testing or interpretation services.

However, potential customers who like taking their time during medical appointments might feel rushed by Doctor on Demand’s rigid time limits.
