SSL.com is a company that was founded back in 2002. They have been one of the leading providers of SSL certificates around the world since that time. They offer wildcard SSL certificates, standard certificates, and EV SSL certificates.

They emphasize their services on the customer, building trust. They use the latest encryption technologies to make sure that their customers have the SSL certificates that meet their needs. They employ detailed background checks for their certificates, ensuring that their customers can attract and retain the trust of their website visitors.

SSL.com has made getting a certificate easy. On their website, they have a full downloadable agreement that fully explains the process of applying for and receiving a certificate. There is also a downloadable certification practice statement, which describes SSL.com’s approach to issuing SSL certificates while staying compliant within the industry.

The Good

  • Affordable prices
  • Security padlock and logo for your website
  • Mobile security
  • 30-day unconditional refund
  • Website ubiquity
  • Quick issuance
  • Easy account manager

SSL.com is one of the "straight-up" providers in the SSL certificate industry. SSL.com focuses exclusively on signature certificates and SSL certificates. This approach allows them to offer affordable certificates for customers. We found that, in the industry, they are able to offer the most affordable SSL certificates to their customers. While their liability warranty isn't all that great, they do offer fast, affordable SSL certificates.

Affordable Prices

The most attractive feature about SSL.com is the prices that they offer for their different SSL certificate packages. With their certificate packages, they offer domain validation, organization development, and extended validation.

We found that their certificates cost the following price tiers:

  • Basic SSL: $49 per year.
  • Wildcard SSL: $225 per year.
  • Enterprise EV: $299 per year.

The prices for the wildcard certificates with SSL.com are also really affordable. A 3-year wildcard certificate will not be more than $750 all together. This was the most affordable price in the industry for wildcard certificates.

Security Padlock and Logo For Your Website

While the security padlock and seal for your website may seem like just an extra gimmick, they actually do increase the trust with visitors to your website. The padlock and "https" on your visitor's domain bar will bolster their confidence in your website's safety. Additionally, we found that the free SSL.com site seal will display all the appropriate credentials and verifications for your website.

Mobile Security

In recent years, customers have started doing more e-commerce over their e-browser. According to SSL.com, the number of customers doing business over mobile will grow by 25% by the year 2017. SSL.com offers mobile security with all of their certificates, whether it is a basic domain verification or if it's total organizational validation for your business website.

30-Day Unconditional Refund

One of the things that we appreciated about SSL.com was that they are pretty straightforward with their unconditional refund. If you change your mind within the first 30 days of your license, you get a full refund. We also found that SSL.com held true to its straightforward unconditional refund.

Website Ubiquity

Another thing that we liked about SSL.com was it works pretty well with most major browsers. They guarantee 99.9% website ubiquity with their SSL certificates with browsers that include Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.

Quick Issuance

One of the things that we also appreciated about SSL.com was their quick issuance. We found that they can get you a basic SSL within a few minutes.

Easy Account Manager

This is a pretty important feature for the SSL certificate industry. We asked about their account manager dashboard and learned that it came with tools that let us turn certain things on and off, set the type of encryption that we wanted, and also made it possible to see when the expiration date was.

The Bad

  • Low liability warranty
  • Lack of clarity with subject alt naming

We were concerned by some of the facets of the services provided by SSL.com. For example, we realized that their multi-domain certificate can only support up to 3 different domains. With GoDaddy, you can get at least five domains with their basic multi-domain certificate. While the certificate with SSL.com is more affordable, we found that it would be better to pay a higher price and get more domains.

Low Liability Warranty

We found that the prices matched the low coverage of SSL.com's warranty. The highest total liability comes with the EV SSL certificate and is only $250,000. The other certificates come with up to $10,000 as your total liability cap.

Lack of Clarity With Subject Alt Naming

One question that we weren't able to get answered was the ability to subject alt names with some of the certificates purchased through SSL.com. We saw that "www." was not included with the EV Enterprise certificate and the Premium certificates. This means that you can't have both a "www.domain.com" name and a "domain.com," because it is a severe limitation of this SSL certificate.

The Bottom Line

We do recommend SSL.com as a provider of SSL certificates. However, we do have some concerns about the low liability coverage that comes with each certificate. We feel like they do a pretty good job of providing affordable prices for small businesses. A large-business may benefit from their enterprise-level certificate, providing the best encryption for customers.
