With so many solar companies out there, it can be difficult to know which one provides the most value for you as a consumer. That’s why we’ve done the hard research—so you don’t have to. We’ve weighed the pros and the cons and found Sungevity to be one of the top competitors in the industry.

The Good

  • Financing options
  • iQuote tool
  • Mobile app
  • Customer service

Financing Options for Every Customer

Sungevity offers several solar financing options, which means that obtaining a home solar system through Sungevity is possible for customers of all budgets. With Sungevity’s loan, lease, and PPA payment options, customers can go solar for zero to little down. Each of these options comes with 24/7 system monitoring, a 25-year manufacturer warranty on the panels, and a 20-year system warranty that encompasses the inverter and workmanship. For customers who are looking for the plan with the most long-term savings, buying the system outright would probably the best option. Customers will pay for the system upfront, but they will own the system and reap the long-term rewards.

iQuote Tool Provides Personalized Solar Quote

Sungevity’s iQuote tool allows customers to get a personalized quote quickly. After answering a few questions over the phone with a Sungevity rep, the iQuote tool can view the roof of the customer’s home, track the amount of sunlight that hits their home, and give them an accurate picture of how their panels will look and function. iQuote can also show customers how much they are going to save with each payment option.

Anytime, Anywhere System Monitoring with OurSungevity App

With the OurSungevity mobile app, customers have information about their solar system at their fingertips. Whether customers have an Android or an iOS device, OurSungevity allows them to track how much energy their panels are producing and how much power they are using from anywhere in the world. In addition to giving customers the ability to monitor their system, OurSungevity lets users contact customer service and earn rewards by referring friends and family through the app.

Top Notch Customer Service

Sungevity has received a large amount of positive reviews on our site regarding its customer service. Consumers are saying that Sungevity’s customer service team is professional, helpful, and quick to reply to questions and requests. Sungevity also offers helpful options for clients who need to move before the contract terms have expired, including assigning the energy plan to the new homeowner; prepaying the remaining payments and assigning the non-financial obligations to the new homeowner; and purchasing the remaining time on the lease, terminating the lease, and asking the company to remove the system.

The Bad

  • Limited online information
  • Availability

Lack of Site Information

Sungevity has a lack of solar system information available on its website. While a basic explanation of each system component is provided, more technical specifications of the system are nowhere to be found. Sungevity’s FAQ section is sparse and does little to fully educate consumers on the value the company can offer. Sungevity’s website lacks a live chat option, which could provide quick and easy access to important company information.

Limited Reach

Sungevity is currently only available in 12 states, which limits the number of customers who have the opportunity to go solar with Sungevity.

The Bottom Line

Sungevity is a highly recommended option for consumers who are considering a home solar system to look into. Although Sungevity is not available in every state and has a limited amount of information regarding equipment on its site, its multiple financing options, proprietary iQuote tool, insightful OurSungevity app, and top notch customer service are hard to beat.

Payment Options

Sungevity is emerging as one of the top home solar companies in the industry. The company offers every kind of payment option a consumer could want and makes it easy for those who qualify to go solar. Sungevity offers four different payment options:

  • An outright purchase
  • A solar loan
  • A solar lease
  • A PPA (Power Purchase Agreement)
Outright Purchase

Sungevity’s purchase option allows customers to own the system themselves. There are no third parties involved, removing any kind of monthly solar payments. The system comes with a 25-year warranty, as well as 24/7 monitoring when customers purchase it through Sungevity. Benefits of owning your solar panel system include receiving the 30 percent federal tax credit, any additional state tax credits, and an increase to your home’s value when you’re ready to sell.

Solar Loan

Customers can finance their system purchase through a loan with Sungevity. The customer will own the system and receive all the benefits mentioned above, but will pay their loan off through monthly payments. Because Sungevity has a vast network of lenders, customers will be sure to find a reasonable interest rate that matches their qualifications and unique situation. And, since the terms of the solar loan imply ownership of the solar panel system, customers will be able to receive the 30 percent federal tax credit as well as any state tax credits. This option also includes 24/7 monitoring and a 25-year system warranty.

Solar Lease

Sungevity also has a lease available if that is the customer’s preferred method of financing. The customer won’t own the system, but there are benefits that come with signing a lease, including a potentially lowered power bill, a 20-year system performance guarantee, and options to help customers transfer the lease if they decide to move.

PPA (Power Purchase Agreement)

With a PPA from Sungevity, a third party will own the system and the customer will only have to pay for the electricity they use at a set rate. The PPA option protects customers from rate hikes. If a customer decides to move, Sungevity will help transfer the agreement to the new homeowner. Because the customer does not own the system, the partner working with Sungevity will install and maintain the system. With its variety of purchasing and leasing options, Sungevity is striving to make solar energy more accessible and affordable than ever for consumers.

iQuote Tool

Sungevity offers a unique feature known as the iQuote tool. After consulting with the customer, the company uses a proprietary design tool to draft and engineer a personalized solar solution for the customer’s home. The iQuote tool generates all paperwork (including the important legal notice allowing the company to proceed with the installation) automatically. Because completing the necessary paperwork on time is one area in which other solar providers commonly fail (clients often find themselves with a system that has been installed, but not yet activated), Sungevity’s iQuote tool is a true game-changer.

Sungevity Solar Equipment

our-sungevitySungevity’s online monitoring system, OurSungevity, allows users to constantly monitor the performance of their home solar system by checking their system’s output, carbon savings, and other electricity related production. OurSungevity even lets customers track their installation process by monitoring the 6 steps of installation online. With OurSungevity, customers can monitor their solar system anytime, anywhere using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. In fact, with an average score of 4/5 stars on Google Play and on the Apple Store, OurSungevity has the highest mobile app ratings out of any solar company.

Sungevity Installers

Sungevity is known for its high-quality dealers. Local installers must undergo an extensive application process and are required to pass two quality assurance checks with top marks in order to work for Sungevity. The quality assurance checks are as follows: first, a regional representative certifies that the design meets standards. Second, a district manager certifies the regional representative’s work. This thorough two-step QA process is unique in the industry and goes a long way to ensuring that each of Sungevity’s solar panel systems is installed correctly and safely.

One of the unique customer experiences associated with Sungevity is the custom installation process. Sungevity’s expert installation team creates a custom design for each home and provides panels that rank high for efficiency, quality, and blendability with the roof of the home. In addition, all systems feature industrial-grade railing, simple assembly, integrated grounding with UL 2703 systems, PE certification, design software for quote preparation, and a 20-year warranty.

It took several months to get the ball rolling, but the installation was finally completed in about 3 days (36 panels). My lease is $184 and change, and my Edison bill went from a minimum of $250 in the winter and over $500 summer to less than $10. In fact, my bill for Feb. 2017 was 50 cents!
I should have done this years ago. The only drawback is that the system will not produce if the Edison fails completely. Apparently the inverters need an input in order to connect the solar panels. This is probably to protect Edison workers in case they are working on their power equipment.

I had a contract with them and they canceled on me, telling me my roof wasn’t strong enough. Another company locally provided my solar and said my roof was fine. I think they canceled me because for some reason it wasn’t good enough business for them. It was a small job.

We still have high electric bills, we believe that there were not enough panels installed on our garage to effect any real savings from the solar installation.

The team was great because they explained step by step what was going on and if I had a any questions I can call them up and get an answer.

The installation is a little frustrating because of the permits that they have to get here. The inspector was not available, it took almost 4 weeks I think from the time that engineers came out surveyed my roof until they were. It took over all about 2 months from start to finish.

The only thing I’m not happy with is the conveyor went out and it was out for a month and they had to repair it but it took them almost a month to repair it which means I had to pay full cost to Edison for a month.

The installation went very well there was a minor glitch in it’s bed I asked them to correct it and they corrected it right away.

The system worked very well. We were able to run run our air conditioner all out summer and our bill from Edison was only like $2 $3 a month.

They came out and worked very quickly and we had it installed within just a couple of weeks. I liked the fact that they had an online presentation rather than coming in your home. We had one problem with it after about 2 years and they came right out and replaced the piece of equipment that wasn’t working properly and it’s been working fine ever since.

They were exceptional. They were right there on the phone if they weren’t there I left them message and I would say within a half hour to an hour I have somebody live on the phone. So far the system appears to be doing a super job. It lowered our electric bill especially the last couple w/c was almost the heaviest with the cold weather and we noticed in July and August of this summer a fantastic saving, oh if you don’t wanna use fantastic let’s put a really big saving in the cost using the air-conditioner. They’re in constant contact with us.

“The system itself has been fantastic. Before I started, they asked me to give them a year’s worth of my energy bill so they could determine my usage and then design a system based on that. They said, “we’ll guarantee that you’ll get at least 110% of what you used in the past”. So last February I did have a bill I had to pay…I think it was $50 or $60. But then starting in March of 2016 until November I generated a credit each month and so I haven’t have to pay a bill since that point other than the access fee that are local power company charges us $16 and $0.95. That should be my bills for the rest of my life…$16.95 a month. It’s what I hoped would happen and it’s what the Sungevity people had told me would happen you know sometimes you have to take people at their word and they did so I’m pretty happy.
For the most part, the installation was all positive. One of the girls that I spoke with who was maybe an engineer, she wanted to start the process in March and I had to explain to her that in where I live in Central New York, March wasn’t a good time to start the process. I was gonna have to wait until there was no chance of snow involved. At first she wasn’t real hot on that idea she tried to convinced me that when you’re up buying a roof and it’s a micro climate it’s different than when you’re on the ground.
As far as I can tell, they’re a good company. It’s not like I’m expert or anything, but I do know that it has worked for me.”

“I researched a number of solar companies and Sungevity was able to give me the best marketing plan available that fit my needs. I thought he did a good job explaining the process and made me comfortable with the plan. I believed it took longer than anticipated, but what I’ve seen in the solar industry that’s kind of a common thing. I’m very amazed with the installation process. The contractor that I used did an amazing job coming in, setting it up and getting it installed. They were very good.
I’m very pleased with the system. It’s still producing above the projections and we went from a $900 a month bill from month in summer time to maybe $300 for the year.”
