The Jamie Oliver website houses thousands of recipes for users and member which range in difficulty and can meet the needs of various dietary restrictions. There are sections created for dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free recipes so those users who have allergies or food preferences can view only those recipes which pertain to their needs.
There is also an extensive blog section which includes sections on News, Features, and the restaurants which Jamie Oliver owns. Members can also sign up for daily email newsletters as well as subscribe to the Jamie Oliver magazine if they choose
The forum and Q & A sections are particularly helpful for users. These sections allow users to ask questions directly to Jamie Oliver or to other users/members of the website. There are also helpful How-To videos which cover some of the cooking basics including "How To Cut Celery," "How to Break Down a Chicken," and "How To Use Your Griddle Pan." There are also featured videos about comfort foods and healthy meals.
Finally, members are able to upload their own recipes to the Jamie Oliver website once they sign up for free and fellow members can view and comment on them.
- No menu or meal planner
- Selective filtering
While the Jamie Oliver website offers practically everything which a user would find helpful it does not include a selective filtering system for search bar results. Users can browse recipes in various categories such as main ingredient, type of dish, and dietary options but when a person uses the search bar to look for a particular item there is no way to filter in or out other ingredients or types of diets. For example, if a user were to type in avocado into the search bar they will see all the results on the page which contain the word avocado, but the user cannot filter those results by difficulty level, dairy-free, or vegan results.
The website also did not offer users or members a type of meal planner or menu creator. This feature would be helpful for those who are busy or pressed for time as well as those who are planning a get-together or event which they are hosting. While the site allows you to create a grocery list on a single recipe, this option is not available for a group of recipes. This option is especially beneficial to users and would improve the usability of the recipes.
The Bottom Line
We recommend the Jamie Oliver website and recipes to home cooks who have been entertaining and preparing meals for their family and friends for a while. Many of the recipes on the website require a certain amount of skill and while there are how-to videos having a preexisting knowledge of basic cooking and meal preparing skills would benefit the user greatly. The site does include options for numerous dietary needs and tastes making it compatible with most users and as a whole it contains numerous articles which can direct home cooks deeper into the world of food.
