Shopify vs Square

Shopify has been in business for a little bit over 15 years and has become a common name in the POS and Merchant Services industries. Some of its distinguishing key points are the multiple plans that are available to users, customizable point of sale software, easy integration, 24/7 customer support, and 71 different customizable customer experience. One major challenge that Shopify has had is the 2.9 percent plus $0.30 per U.S. credit card swipe charge per online transaction on the basic package. This is on top of the monthly fee of $29. In order to have that rate decreased, you will need to invest in a more expensive package.

Square has been in the business for just about 10 years and has become popular among merchants for a number of reasons. Square is known for not having monthly fees, startup fee, authorization fees, statement fees, refund fees, PCI-compliance fees, or business card fees. Similar to Shopify, Square only charges a consistent transaction fee of 2.75 percent. If you are entering a transaction manually, there is a 3.5 percent + $0.15 fee, and customer fees for invoices, online stores, square eCommerce API,  and eCommerce Card on File Payments are 2.9 percent + $0.30 of the total. Square does offer a number of hardware and software options and additional features for simple integration. The major challenge that Square faces is the lack of warranties provided. If customers have issues with the product, Square does not take responsibility maintaining a "as is" policy.

I used the Shopify service for a few years and was very pleased with how well it worked for me. I could run my online store right from home! one of the best things is if you have a small business is you can just use the basic service and it is very affordable. I was happy with how easy it was to get started

Square is beyond valuable when it comes to handling my business sales transactions. All transactions are safe and speedy. And the rates for the service are reasonable and easy to manage behind the scenes. Their tools are always reliable and their customer service is beyond helpful. A must for small business. It has sure helped mine!

The best thing about square is the POS is easy to use. The worst thing is when I first started there were options I was able to use without being charged. Now, these options have been taken away for everyone and they started charging a fee. It seems like they are breaking things down into add on items you have to pay for. So every little thing you want to do is a new add on item. It is just getting to be too expensive any more. Some of the add on items I really need but I am just going to seek out a new POS instead.

The Final Word

If you were to choose between these two POS solutions to be your provider, there are a couple of factors to consider.

Pricing

The pricing for both of these companies is fairly similar. The major difference is that Square does not have a monthly fee. Shopify requires monthly fees that range anywhere from $29–$299 per month. We feel that as a whole, Square is a better option if you are concerned about how much you will be paying for your POS solution services.

Features

Both Shopify and Square provide merchants with a number of features to help them with their success. If you are selling online, we would recommend using Shopify. Customizable customer experience features are rare and with 71 options, you will be able to keep your customers at home making purchases online. If you are selling in a store or restaurant, we would recommend using Square. The number of software and hardware options for the retail and restaurant industries outweigh those available from Shopify and are much better suited for these atmospheres.

When it comes down to it, if you are looking to sell online, we feel that Shopify would be great POS solution providers for you. If you are selling at a store or restaurant, you should definitely go with Square.
