The Good

  • Community to share artwork
  • Free membership
  • Sell and buy artwork
DeviantArt isn't your typical photo sharing website. This member-based community is focused solely on sharing individually created artwork. Their website is a creative platform that shares digital art, sculptures, paintings, films, anime, and more. Features of include:
  • Free basic membership
  • 2GB of storage
  • Great advertising platform
  • Minimum pixels ensure quality
  • Merchandise options
  • Easy search by hashtag option
  • Professional grade displays
  • Positive networking
  • Sell/purchase art
  • Ability to upgrade membership
Deviant Art offers 2 GB of free storage for a free membership, but to upgrade only costs $4.95 and you receive 10 GB of storage. An upgraded membership also includes options that will increase your art sales such as:
  • No ads
  • Browse more content, faster
  • Schedule multiple deviations at once
  • Save 10% off prints
  • Access to weekly giveaways
  • Promote your portfolio

A membership from DeviantArt is something to consider if you are looking for a venue to sell your artwork. Also, DeviantArt is a smart place to buy original artwork. DeviantArt is strictly against any type of plagiarism or use of copyrighted content. It's a great place to see original ideas that are in a high quality format.

The Bad

  • No bulk storage
  • No editing options
  • Can be overwhelming
DeviantArt is exclusive to artists and art lovers. If you are not interested in promoting or buying artwork then you are probably in the wrong spot. There are no bulk storage capabilities since uploading too many files will clog up your 2GB of free memory quickly. Here are a few concerns with the website:
  • No security policy
  • No editing options
  • No collage or slideshow options
  • Advertised browsing
  • Strict website rules
  • Limited storage
A first time user of DeviantArt might be overwhelmed by lingo that is used on the website. Even if you are an artist, a lot of the website abbreviations have to do with the keyboard shortcuts and software. Additionally, DeviantArt is not the best website for young users. Since it promotes thousands of different artists, many of the pieces include language, sexual images, violence, or drug use. DeviantArt does not have restrictions in place for pornographic images or violence. Lastly, DeviantArt does not regulate comments on the posted artwork. This means you might get harsh or negative comments from anonymous users.

The Bottom Line

We would recommend DeviantArt as an excellent website to share artistic endeavors such as photography or sculpture. DeviantArt is definitely not your typical photo sharing website and is not a good website for posting your family vacation pictures. However, if you are a serious photographer looking to get discovered, DeviantArt is a simple way to promote your work.
