Moneytree is a short-term lending company that specializes in offering payday loans. They also provide other financial services, such as check cashing and wire transfers. They have lots of options, making their products fairly flexible, and even provide loans without a checking account.

Loan limits vary depending on the state of residence, income, and other information of the applicant.

Their customer service representatives are quick to answer phone calls and emails, and even have a call-back system in place so customers do not have to wait on hold on the phone for long periods of time. Moneytree has over 120 branches and locations in five states in the western United States, and their services are also available online.

Moneytree has been operating as a family-owned business since 1983, employs over 900 team members, and has been named one of the best companies to work for in Washington several times.

The Good

  • Loan Options
  • Fast Approval
  • Quick Access to Funds
  • Additional Services

Loan Options

Moneytree is a short-term funding provider that offers several types of loans. The type of loans available and their associated costs and fees are dependent on the state in which they are issued. The types of loans are:

  • Payday loans
  • Title loans
  • Installment loans
  • Business loans
  • Auto equity loans

Moneytree particularly specializes in offering payday loans and makes those available both online and in their stores. The interest rates vary depending on each state's laws and on the amount borrowed, but they typically range from 391.07% and 460.16% APR for a standard 14-day repayment period. For loans without a checking account, the interest rates go up to 573.57% APR. In order to apply for a payday loan from Moneytree, either online or in one of their branches, borrowers must have and provide:

  • ID and social security number
  • Address and phone number
  • Source of income
  • Open checking account

Fast Approval

Applicants will typically hear back about the status of their online application within 60 minutes. Once an applicant has been approved, he or she can request a specific loan amount, how funds will be received, and a repayment term.

Quick Access to Funds

Funds can be received instantly on a prepaid card purchased from Moneytree or in person at one of their branches. Funds can also be deposited directly into a checking account in 1 to 3 business days. Generally, the repayment term is 14 days but it can be anywhere from 9 to 45 days, depending on the state and the frequency of the borrower's paychecks.

Additional Services

Moneytree also provides several other financial services, such as:

  • Check cashing
  • Wire transfer
  • Gold buying
  • Money orders
  • Bill pay
  • Prepaid cards

Each of these services comes with an associated fee, which will vary depending on the state and could also vary between individual locations. Moneytree's customer service center is available 24/7 via phone or through an email form on their website. Although they state that responses can take up to 48 hours, the response time is usually much shorter. Their payment center is available during normal business hours via phone or the online email form.

The Bad

  • Limited Availability
  • Rates and Fees
  • Scam Alert

Limited Availability

Moneytree loans and services are not available in all states. In fact, they are available in only five states in the western United States:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Idaho
  • Nevada
  • Washington

Moneytree also has locations in British Columbia, Canada.

Rates and Fees

As with any payday lending institution, the largest drawback to using Moneytree's services are the high interest rates and additional fees. Although Moneytree's rates are fairly average for the payday loan industry, they are much higher than the annual interest rates on other types of loans. Moneytree is fairly upfront about the additional fees that come with their services and loans. The fees depend mainly on the regulations of each state and are most frequently assessed for late payments or insufficient funds. There are also different conditions and options for extending loans that, again, vary from state to state.

Scam Alert

Moneytree has a scam alert to let customers know that Moneytree's name and company information have been used in a scam operation in which people receive threatening phone calls about overdue loan payments. Moneytree provides several signs for identifying, protecting against, and reporting fraudulent calls. They also have information about a few other scam operations in specific locations and repeatedly affirm they are not associated with any of these operations.

The Bottom Line

Moneytree is an established short-term loan company that has been in operation for over thirty years. They specialize in providing payday loans, but have several other funding options available including loans that do not require a checking account. They also offer other financial services, including check cashing.

Moneytree's annual interest rates fall into the average ranges for the payday loan industry, but they are still much higher than interest rates for other loan types. There are also additional fees that may occur; however, they are upfront about those possibilities.

Moneytree is only available in five western states (California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, and Washington) and in British Columbia. Their services are available both online and in one of their branch locations.

Moneytree has been targeted in a scam operation that uses their name and company information, so potential customers should be aware of what to look for and how to protect against fraudulent calls.

Susannah (Branch Assistant Manager) has been amazing every single time I've been to the Mount Vernon moneytree location! She's always kind, she's knowledgeable, she has wonderful customer service. She deserves a raise. I live in Bellingham and have to use the Mount Vernon location after the Bellingham location was closed.

Moneytree was there for me when I needed a quick loan. It was easy to pay back and the interest rate wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. They had great customer service and I would use them again in a heartbeat.

Horrible experience. I gave these people a tax return showing income, bank statement and a transaction report from my merchant account, Square. I am self-employed and receive direct deposits from Square. Just because it does not say "Square" on my bank statements, I was denied, even though the statements show transactions ID's which can be verified. What a waste of time. I don't recommend for self employment unless you have like a million freaking reports signed by the President of the United States. (sarcasm)

I had been dealing with Money Tree for years. This year they asked for Proof of Income, as they do every year. I sent my recent tax return, my bank statement (current) showing my direct deposits, and my 1099s. They said this was not enough proof of income that they wanted me to send my award letter. My 1099 is more current and is proof of what I am paid! lol Forget it! Lots of money saved. Not worth the hassle!

I spent 3 days on the phone with customer service to send documents for my loan. Each representative stated they didn't have anything or they needed additional information. After 3 days of calls, emails and faxes. They approved 94 dollars. My initial request was $1000. This place is a joke and a waist of time.
