There are many reasons one would create a profile on a dating site. It's convenient and you can usually get a date scheduled quickly. It works well for those of us who don't have large groups of friends or aren't social butterflies, giving us another medium with which to communicate. It even reduces the risk of divorce. But they can be expensive! eHarmony users pay almost 60 bucks a month! Let's think about this. How can we ensure our money is well-spent?

Use an Affordable Site

You could try a site that is competitively priced, but still well-known. OKCupid is usually cheap. Although pricing depends on your age and other factors, it can be as low as one tenth the cost of competitors like eHarmony. Zoosk is competitive as well, at about 13 dollars a month for six months. It's also the top-rated dating site at Best Companys. Save a little extra by waiting for a sale, says Trish McDermott of You can usually create a profile before you provide credit card information.

Network Effectively (Filter and Update)

April Masini, of, says you should make sure to use filters well. Know what you're looking for and adjust your filters accordingly. Go ahead and filter out anyone who doesn't fit into your desired age range, religion and parental status. Anything that a site won't filter for you should be discussed when you meet your date, says April. By doing so, you'll limit the time you spend dating people who are not compatible with you. Find a match earlier and you'll be able to cancel your subscription earlier, but please don't rush!

A way to boost your interactions is to update your profile frequently. Most dating websites will reward you for it, by sticking your photo here and there a little bit more often.

Choose a Free Site (Or Use Facebook)

Most users will agree that OKCupid offers the best free features. You can probably get by with a free subscription but if you want extra features, you can upgrade. Other mainstream dating sites offer free versions, too. One of them is Plenty of Fish. There are loads of sites few of us have heard of, like Farmers Only. Try one after you've done your research on it. Check the Better Business Bureau and any reviews you can locate. Be sure to check out all of our reviewed sites, too. Don't use Craigslist to find a date. Let's just say it's not very useful at this time.

If you have some close friends with some time to help, you should definitely spend time on Facebook. Browse photos and find some comments, posts or pictures you can relate to or find intriguing. Then ask a mutual friend to introduce you to the person who wrote or posted them. You can even ask questions about the person before you get introduced. Having an opinion from a trusted friend is priceless!
