MSN — Master’s Entry Clinical Nurse (MECN)

The University of California Los Angeles Nursing School prepares students with a baccalaureate degree in another degree for a career in nursing. It is a two-year pre-licensure program that includes summer enrollment between the first and second years. Students who complete the program are granted the MSN degree and can take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) to be licensed as a registered nurse (RN). Graduates of the program are also qualified to take the Clinical Nurse Leader certification exam given by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and can apply for a Public Health Nursing Certificate from the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Admits Applicants With Military Experience

UCLA School of Nursing will accept qualified applicants who have completed relevant military education and experiences, as well as meet the university's requirements and provide documented equivalency courses. After being admitted, students can complete a challenge examination for credit.

Specialty Areas

The UCLA Nursing Program was ranked in the top 3 percent of U.S. Nursing Schools in the U.S. News & World Report in 2018. Students can find their niche in one of its many specialty areas:

  • Family
  • Occupational Health
  • Pediatrics
  • Underserved Populations
  • Acute Care

The Bad

  • Lack of Online Degrees
  • Limited Number of Students Admitted

Lack of Online Degrees

There is no option to complete any of the degrees online; the program is full-time and taught on the UCLA campus.

Limited Number of Students Admitted

UCLA School of Nursing admits 70 students each fall. The school usually receives around 500 applications for the program, so the pool is quite competitive. UCLA suggests that with such a competitive program, students apply to multiple schools and take the time to submit a thorough and complete application.

The Bottom Line

If you are one of the students accepted into the UCLA School of Nursing, you will benefit from a nursing school ranked in the top 3 percent. UCLA Nursing offers students the opportunity to become professionals in the industry in one of its specialty areas. The fact that the school allows military members to receive credit for past courses and relevant experience is fantastic for students who were in the military and want to enter the nursing industry.
