Moving comes with a long list of challenges. Whether you are making a local or long distance move, you will be faced with the challenge of organizing and packing all of your belongings and preparing to transport them.
Fortunately, a number of moving services can help you through your move. The following moving services are companies that we would recommend researching to see if their services are a good fit for you. If you are interested in seeing other moving service reviews as well, here is a list of a number of other companies as well.
U-Haul was founded in 1945 when the Shoens noticed the need for do-it-yourself moving equipment in the moving industry. This allowed people access to vehicles that could help them feasibly take control of their move to ensure the proper moving of their belongings and furniture.
U-Haul has spent over 70 years serving individuals not only in the United States, but around the world. Vehicle rentals are available across the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska).
The pricing of moves made with U-Haul differs greatly depending on the distance traveled. For those who are moving a short distance within the same state, rental prices start as low as $19.95 with $0.69 per mile. For those who are seeking to move to another state, pricing ranges from $170–$1,200 for a small truck and up to $1,900 for larger vehicles.
If you are looking for an online quote, there are a couple of resources available to you. First, if you are just looking for pricing on renting a vehicle, you can find one online by providing both the address you are moving from and the address that you are moving to. Common rates have been quoted as follows:
- 10’ Truck (Studio to 1 Bedroom Apt.) — $101
- 15’ Truck (1 Bedroom Home to 2 Bedroom Apt.) — $106
- 20’ Truck (2 Bedroom Home to 3 Bedroom Apt.) — $116
- 26’ Truck (3 Bedroom Home to 4 Bedroom Apt.) — $132
*Note: All of these prices are for 1-day of use and 72 miles total travel. If you would like to tow your vehicle, you can pay an additional $49.99 for a car dolly.
As is common among all moving services, challenges always present themselves as services are provided. Common complaints mentioned by customers in recent consumer reviews include poor cutomer service, costs being more than quoted online, and restrictions for Ford Explorer users.
International Van Lines
International Van Lines was founded in 2000 and since has made a good name for itself in the moving industry. As a partner of United Van Lines it has been able to expand its reach significantly around the world.
One of the advantages of using International Van Lines is the number of locations that it services. With physical locations in California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, and a number abroad through United Van Lines, this service is able to provide services to individuals in 180 countries.
International Van Lines guarantees quality work and therefore does charge a little bit more than other moving services. Pricing differs depending on distance and quantity of goods that need moving.
One interesting feature in the pricing provided by IVL is the price match feature. If you are given a lower quote by another comparable service, IVL will match that price. It is important to note that price matches will only be made when the compared company provides the same quality of services as IVL.
Some additional charges that customers may be interested include the following:
- Long carry (over 75 feet) — $75 per 75 feet
- Elevator fee — $75 per stop
- Stairs (over 7 steps) — $75 per flight, no charge of stairs inside a single family home
- Shuttle service if an 18-wheel trailer can’t be used at the destination — $1 per cubic foot, a minimum cost of $350, if needed
- Bulky items that can’t be stacked — $150
- Piano fees — $150–$350+, depending on size
- Motorcycle handling — $350
- Storage — $0.50 per cubic foot per month
Like a number of other moving services in the industry, IVL provides a free online quote. International Van Line's artificial intelligence tool lets you record a quick walkthrough of your home on your phone and then the software scans and itemizes your inventory to provide a more accurate quote. This is not a common service provided by a number of other movers.
International Moving Services has been reviewed by a number of customers that have had a wide variety of different experiences. Knowing the good and the bad will hopefully help you find the right moving service for you. Some of the issues that customers have complained of when using International Van Lines are the following:
- damaged goods
- late or delayed deliveries
- low initial quotes and high final charges
- poor customer service
