The Good

  • Product Line
  • Consultant training
  • Commission and No Sales Quota

Product Line

Mary & Martha sells exclusive Scripture-inscribed and faith-related products for the home and the company is based on the Biblical story of the sisters with the same name in the New Testament. The company offers a flexible business model that allows individuals to choose how often they work and when.

Independent consultants sell the product line through demonstrations at in-home hosted parties. The company features a product line of over 200 items. The company also offers monthly sales and other promotions through its company website and catalogs.

Consultant Training

Individuals have two options for joining the company as an independent consultant. Two Starter Kits are offered at $125 and $175 respectively. Both of the starter kits feature different selections of home decor to display at hosted parties as well as business tools to help the consultant get started.

The direct sales company also offers personal volume bonuses, company-sponsored incentive trips, and a personalized website for its consultants. Independent consultants also receive a monthly e-newsletter and receive company training and support.

Although it is not clearly stated on the company website what that business training and support actually entails.

Commission and No Sales Quota

Independent consultants earn 25 percent commission on product sales and team recruitment. There are no inventory or sales quota requirements. The company also offers a Great Start rewards program that gives new consultants an opportunity to earn free products during their first 60 days. Hostesses receive redeemable credit towards product purchases based on their party's sales volume.

The Bad

  • Website is Difficult to Navigate
  • Lack of Transparency
  • Limited Customer Base

Website is Difficult to Navigate

Navigating the company website is not an easy task for consumers, It is not easy to view the company's products and guides online. Clicking on the tabs leads you to pages where you are supposed to tap to the right or left in order to scroll through pages and view the information offered.

This may work well on touch screens or mobile devices, but definitely does not work for personal computers without supporting features.

The company needs to offer more options for consumers to view their product catalogs and business guides. The company offers a way to find a consultant in your area by typing in your area code. Upon typing in an area code, the website popped up with a screen to type in a local address and select a state.

However, there was no submission button on the popup screen. This can frustrate a user and make them look elsewhere to purchase similar products.

You need to have an independent consultant assigned to you in order to shop through the company, but the process to acquire one is extremely frustrating.

Lack of Transparency

Mary & Martha claims to offer training and support for its independent consultants. However, the company does not clearly detail what the training and support actually entail or its overall effectiveness in the marketplace.

New business owners need to be able to have advanced sales and marketing methods in order to successfully grow in this type of industry.

The company could do better by explaining what types of training and support new consultants should expect to receive. Individuals who are in need of these particular skills may want to invest in educational course themselves or find an alternative company that teaches these advanced methods.

Limited Customer Base

The company is also heavily Christian-based, so consumers that do not subscribe to these beliefs will most likely not be interested in the business opportunity or the company's products.

The Christian faith is heavily encouraged to be shared at in-home demonstration parties, which may also be a turnoff for some consumers. For those who hold the same belief systems, this will not be an issue.

The Bottom Line

Mary & Martha is the perfect business opportunity for individuals who subscribe to the Christian faith. The company offers an exclusive line of scripture-inscribed and faith related products. Signup costs are within reason for industry standards and independent consultants are offered 25 percent commission on product sales. The company is an upstanding member of the Direct Selling Association.

The company's website is horrible for users to navigate successfully. Finding a consultant is not easy and the product line is not easily viewable. The company also states that it offers training and support for its consultants but does not clearly detail what the training covers. Overall, it appears Mary & Martha is a legitimate and reputable direct sales company.

However, consumers are encouraged to research the company for themselves in order to determine whether or not it is right for their unique needs.

I have been with Mary and Martha for 5 months and love their heart for Christ and ministry. Great customer service, awesome specials for customers, and the encouragement from other women who are part of your team has been such a blessing. I do wish it was easier to earn larger commission a little quicker and easier.

Products are high quality. Very supportive home office. Many opportunities to earn free products through frequent sales contests. Flash sales and monthly specials provided by the company. Sweet sisterhood among consultants. Earning incentive trips is very achievable to even those working their businesses part-time. Returns and exchanges easily handled with home office. Fast shipping times.

Their home office and customer service is some of the best I have ever dealt with and they're always very friendly. Their shipping response time is quick and they are launching new web applications this year.
