The Good

  • Variety of medical alert equipment
  • 24/7 professional monitoring
  • Additional services

Variety of Medical Alert Equipment

Life Alert provides customers with several choices on medical alarm equipment. Waterproof pendants can be worn around the neck or wrist and can be safely used in the shower. The company also has mobile apps that can be downloaded on a cell phone that will connect to the monitoring station during an emergency through the press of a button. Mobile pendants are available for seniors who are highly active outside the home.

24/7 Professional Monitoring

The company provides 24/7 professional monitoring from its own U.S. based call center. Dispatchers will stay connected with the pendant’s user until emergency help arrives. Family and friends will be contacted by the dispatchers when emergency events occur.

Additional Services

Life Alert offers additional services to help customers feel safe at home. The company provides protection against fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Life Alert also offers audio monitoring services where dispatchers can help scare away burglars and alert local police during intrusion attempts. Customers can answer incoming telephone calls and speak with Life Alert dispatchers through the pendants using two-way voice technology.

The Bad

  • Undisclosed costs
  • Limited features
  • Undisclosed contract and cancellation policies

Undisclosed Costs

No upfront information is offered on the website for monthly monitoring rates or potential equipment costs. Customers may be subject to termination fees for early cancellation. Potential activation and installation fees are not disclosed either and may be charged upfront. Customers are required to purchase equipment in full at the time of enrollment.

Limited Features

The medical alert system does not automatically test its own connection with the monitoring center. There also appears to be no activity monitoring or automatic fall detection features. The device range for its main equipment is only 800 ft. However, the company does offer mobile equipment for use anywhere outside the home.

Undisclosed Contract and Cancellation Policies

The company does not list any contract details on its corporate website. Customers may be required to sign a long term contract which may contain automatic renewal clause. There is no offer of a money-back guarantee and return policy information is not listed. Customers may be subject to certain cancellation restrictions. One common cancellation constriction is that users must show proof of entering a long-term care facility in order to be able to cancel without penalty.

The Bottom Line

Life Alert offers medical alarm devices that can be used by both home bound and highly active seniors. The company offers a wide variety of equipment but pricing information is not transparent on the website and purchases must be made upfront. Monthly monitoring rates are not listed as well. The equipment is backed by a lifetime warranty with free shipping. Customers may be eligible for homeowners insurance premium discounts.

Besides medical alarm equipment, Life Alert also offers fire safety devices, carbon monoxide protection, and intrusion prevention monitoring services. Two-way voice technology helps customers answer incoming calls and speak with emergency personnel. Customers may be required to agree to a long term contract that may feature cancellation restrictions and automatic renewal clauses. The company does not disclose certain upfront service fees such as installation and activation. Features on the Life Alert medical alarms are not as comprehensive as those offered by similar industry competitors.

We had the equipment ready for pick up. They went to the wrong front desk even though we told them exactly where to go. Because of this, we were charged an additional month and told that they could not take off the charge until they got their equipment back, even though it was there fault and that we’re suppose to call after a few days, only after they get their equipment back to see if they are willing to take of the charge that was their fault to begin with.
