Founded in 1963, Pimsleur Language Programs offers language instruction based on the Pimsleur Method for learning to speak, understand, and read new languages. Named for Dr. Paul Pimsleur, a linguist, this scientifically-proven method, consists of several principles:

  • Graduate Interval Recall — the optimal spacing for introducing information so that it moves from short-term to long-term memory
  • The Principle of Anticipation — a way to accelerate learning and increase understanding by using learners' innate brain function that tries to anticipate correct responses
  • Core Vocabulary — a slow and steady approach to new vocab, which limits the new words you learn all at once
  • Organic Learning — all new info introduced in these courses is given in the context of a conversation to help with retention

While Pimsleur's was established in the '60s, Dr. P's courses weren't marketed to consumers until 1980. Publishing house Simon & Schuster took over distribution in 1995.

Pimsleur offers over 50 languages, including English (ESL) from 14 different native language perspectives, and focuses on daily exposure for 30 minutes a day.

Potential customers can try out the first lesson online to get an idea of how it works. Lessons consist of pre-packaged interactive audio multimedia and help you pass off several skills, which you can review later. The program also offers learning tools like quizzes, flashcards, and Speak Easy, a review of conversation transcripts to help improve your pronunciation and comprehension.

The program is available through several different formats:

  • Online monthly subscription ($19.95) — access on desktop, mobile, and mobile apps for iOS, Android, and Nook. It is also accessible on Amazon's Alexa. A 7-day free trial to the whole thing is available. If not canceled after the trial period, billing automatically starts.
  • Audio-only mp3 dowloads — purchasing 30 lessons (one level) at a time ($119.95 each). There are several diffrent packages to bundle, but the entire bundle of levels 1–5 costs $550. You can also buy 5 lessons at a time for $21.95.
  • CDs courses — purchase one level at a time for $345. There are several different ways to bundle different levels, but the full bundle of levels 1–5 costs $1,190.
  • Software downloads — more similar to the online model, this is the visual, interactive portable software. Buy 30 lessons (1 level) for $150, the full thing (levels 1–5) for $575, or get different levels bundled together, if you wish.

Not all languages have the same purchase or pricing options.

This language learning program is my personal favorite when I begin to learn a new language. It's a great beginner program and it offers an abundant amount of languages in its library.

I’ve loved learning through Pimsleur. It helps so much with native pronunciation and actually gets you speaking the language instead of just studying it.

Pimsleur is an excellent program. You can learn at your own pace and it isn’t hard. It is just a matter of being consistent.
