Founded in 2007, iTalki is an online language tutoring platform base and has categories for more than 130 languages. Users pay per lesson. There are over 10,000 teachers to choose from and more than 5 million registered learners.
First, you choose a teacher based on their profile. You can add credits to your account to pay for lessons. Each teacher lists their own hourly rates. Next, you schedule the date and time of your lesson. Then you get to meet via video chat with your teacher. Lessons can last 30–90 minutes.
Italki is half social network/half online tutoring. There are no free lessons (outside of a free 30-minute trial lesson), but there are free features. There's no real teach yourself option, but you can use lots of the free community features. It's a whole community where users can post articles or use notebooks to practice writing in their chosen language. Then you get to have it reviewed or corrected by native speakers. There is a forum to ask language questions to get help with stuff that you can't just google the answer too. You can find a language partner, sorting through different native speakers and then collaborate in learning exchanges.
According to a study, Dr. Roumen Vesselinov, PhD, found that 19 hours on italki is equivalent to 35 hours on duolingo and 55 hours of Rosetta Stone.
