Identity Theft Protection

LifeLock provides several identity theft protection services in an effort to catch identity theft and identity fraud before it happens.

LifeLock customers can receive credit monitoring services (See disclaimer below) from all three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion), dark web monitoring, data breach notifications, social security number monitoring, financial account monitoring, and more.

What is identity theft and am I at risk?

Identity theft is a crime in which someone accesses information to commit fraud, typically by getting false credentials, opening new accounts in someone else's name or using someone else's existing accounts. In the United States, identity theft is a serious crime. You can take steps to help avoid having your identity stolen, but first, you'll need to know how identity theft occurs and how to spot it.

How does identity theft happen?

There are a lot of ways identity theft can happen to you. Hackers may get your information from a data security breach. Or, you may unknowingly provide it on social media, during conversions others can hear or by leaving financial documents in unsafe places. That information may include: Full name, address and birth date Social Security number Car insurance or medical insurance account numbers Credit card or bank account numbers Details that can tip off people to your account recovery questions, such as your mother's maiden name or your home town With this information, criminals could impersonate you, max out your credit cards, rent an apartment, steal your frequent-flyer miles or act out in a number of other ways.

What types of identity theft are there?

What are some ways thieves can steal my information?

Or they may listen as you make a call and provide your account information. Dumpster diving — A thief sifts through your garbage can. Discarded checks and credit card statements are just two sources of valuable personal information. Online: Public Wi-Fi –— Public Wi-Fi usually doesn't encrypt data, so anyone with the Wi-Fi password and some hacker know-how can monitor what you see and what you send. The hacker could commit identity theft if he or she intercepts your information. Unencrypted websites — Make sure a website is encrypted before you use it for a financial transaction. Typically, you'll see a picture of a lock in the URL field, and the URL will contain "https," meaning it's secure. Phishing — When thieves contact you from a phone number or email address tailored to look familiar and trustworthy, their goal is to take personal information from you.

What should I look out for and what are warning signs of identity theft?

Beware of emails that have bad spelling or grammar, an unprofessional email address, urgent requests for information, or any type of attachment or link.  Also look for these common warning signs from the FTC: Withdrawals from your banking account that did not come from you Bills you generally get are no longer coming to you Calls about debt that you do not owe Unfamiliar charges to your account Medical bills for service you did not receive A letter from the IRS stating more than one tax return was filed in your name or that you have income from an employer you never worked for A company where you do business notifies you that your personal information was accessed in a data breach A sudden drop in your credit score online

How do I recover from identity theft?

It happens, and reacting quickly might be the most important thing to do when it does. Follow these steps if you are a victim of identity theft:  Inform the business where your information was misused about the fraudulent activity. Close these accounts. File a police report. Contact the three major credit reporting bureaus — TransUnion, Equifax and Experian — and consider putting a fraud alert on your credit. This ensures future creditors will take extra steps to verify your identity first. Consider a credit freeze, which is stronger than a fraud alert and ensures no one can use your credit to open new accounts. You'll still need to monitor existing accounts. If you don't have a credit monitoring account, consider setting one up. Change your passwords, so they're strong and unique, for all your online accounts.

What can I do to protect myself from identity theft?

No one can prevent all identity theft, but there are ways to help protect yourself. You can read about ways to help protect yourself from identity theft in more detail online, but some basic precautions include: Avoid carrying your social security number, and keep it in a safe place. Do not give out the number unless it’s absolutely necessary. Don’t respond to unsolicited inquiries about your personal information like phone number, email address, name, bank account information, etc. Always collect your mail as quickly as possible and place a hold when you’re away.  Enable the security features on your mobile devices. Contact your financial institution if statements are late. Review your credit card and financial statements for unauthorized transactions. I've heard so much about Lifelock, and know that id theft protection is absolutely necessary. For both my wife and I, the cost came to about 54$/mo. That was a bit high. When I called to cancel, they explained that I only needed the highest level on one and could put the base level on the other. It would have been nice, and more honest, had they explained it when I signed up. I went ahead and signed up that way, then with the discount they gave me, my monthly would be approximately two or three dollars more than I was paying just for one. That afternoon I checked my bank account and see that LifeLock had charged my account. Since I had already paid for the month, I did not understand. When I called, it took a while for them to figure it out. Ultimately they had changed my billing date, and charged me the new amount. I cancelled LifeLock. I hired them to keep people from accessing my account without my permission, not so they can do it themselves. And, this is exactly what they did. I did not authorize them to change my billing date, nor did they inform me that they would be doing that. Because of outages, I took me 24 hours, approximately to get back in touch with them, which stressed me out. If they had explained what they were doing, I would have told them that I wouldn't be okay with the change of billing dates. Ultimately they lost my business.

I know know that I can have you monitor activity on retirement instruments such as 401ks and IRAs. It would have been nice to have illustrated that in your sign up or membership information. On another note, I received an e-mail solicitation from you to upgrade to the ultimate plus plan. I signed myself up on line and then called Lifelock with a question about getting prorated credit for my prior membership that I had paid for through early May 2015. I was told that I would get a credit within 30 days. It would have been nice to have that stated in the upgrade information. I asked the representative if the upgrade that I did on line included my wife. I was told that it did not but that she could sign her up for me during the call. She informed me that because we had been long time members, she could offer me a 15% discount on her account but not mine because the discount can only come if you are calling in to a representative for the upgrade and I had already upgraded a few minutes earlier. This is a strange business practice. You solicit me via e-mail to upgrade but would discount my bill only if I call in and not upgrade on line. Obviously everyone would like to pay the lowest amount that a vendor would offer for the same service. I found this disappointing but your phone representative was wonderful.

I had an incident where I was sent something I did not sign nor fill anything out for. The first rep I spoke with was polite but she said I needed to get more info from the company that sent me said item. The next day, after getting the requested info, the rep I spoke with had a very blase' and almost apathetic attitude towards my situation. It was almost like I was bothering him. Somehow we were disconnected. I was actually glad as I was so irritated by his lack of customer service skills, I called back right away to cancel -then changed my mind. I called back and got a very helpful rep who really listened and went above and beyond. That third rep is the ONLY reason I am staying with Lifelock as the second rep (who was male) was so damn irritating to speak with. He should be fired for that phone call alone -or at minimum, coached and put on some sort of probation. If you hire apathetic people, your services -and patronage, will suffer.

I was absolutely troubled when I called. I was suppose to get a call back this morning from Nicole (sp?) at 9am sharp for further asistance. I did not get a call so I called in on the caller ID number that called me this past Friday afternoon. I got through to a Paul (who would not give me his last name-eventhough he questioned me on not having Nicole's last name) and he made me even more troubled. Paul said there was NO record of my events over the past week in the files. I was so concerned, he transferred me to Sue. She was GREAT! Confirming my information and prior calls. She helped with everything and assisted me with TransUnion 7 year fraud alert process. Sue delivered the service I have been use to from LifeLock. She even went further to assist and make me feel more comfortable given the circumstances. Sue is a real asset to your organization.

I'm not really sure why I huse LifeLock except that it feels like insurance. I had two credit cards stolen and wouldn't have found out about it unless American Express called me and said there was some suspicious activity on my cars and that they had not authorized the purchases. Citi Visa did not and over $8600 in charges were made on that card. Some suspicious activity was detected on my Chase MasterCard that Chase caught and declined. In neither case did LifeLock catch the activity. I'm not even sure LifeLock was aware of the fraud. Maybe I'm just not sure what LifeLock covers, but after this latest identity theft, I think I better look into it.

I have been a victim of identity theft for 3 years plus. I still frequently have issues with this. When I call Life Lock, I am already frustrated and to sit on hold 3 times in the last 7 days for over 15 minutes is very frustrating. Yesterday, I was told after holding for 28 minutes, "The fraud department is not answering due to heavy call volume. We will need to call you back." Your Company offers a service that I am in great need of. I am happy to be a Customer of Life Lock. But when I have to sit on hold for over 15 minutes every time I call, it makes me wonder about the management of your services...

This is not a "complaint", exactly, but we have received a fair number of alerts from Lifelock pertaining to legitimate transactions. Their vigilance is what we're paying them for, and we'd rather they were a little over-zealous than careless. We respond as quickly as possible, but recently discovered that even though I had responded to a series of alerts, and believed them cleared, they were still showing as "live" under my husband's sign-on. (I don't understand why, but we have two accounts that are linked in some way, instead of a single account.) At that point, the alerts were about 2 weeks old, and we're wondering what would happen if neither of us had responded in that time. We *thought* someone should have notified him of the open status of these alerts under his name. Now we know that we both need to respond. Still, we consider this an invaluable resource and service, and will certainly maintain it. Phone support, when we've sought it, has been first-rate

I just recently learned there are different levels of service. Guess I missed that when I enrolled, but even now I don't understand why a better effort to inform clients isn't made by Lifelock. I don't know what level of service I have and when I've reviewed my account it is confusing and unclear. I clicked a service above but I truly don't know what I am paying for, would be nice to know.

I was getting worried because I haven't received an email from you for the past three months. I even telephoned you to ask why I stopped getting my monthly emails? The person on the telephone didn't seem to know. But I am so happy I received an email on May 1st. I hope the emails continue each month. Thank you.

LifeLock has worked to stop theft most of the time. I do have to admit though, that there was one thing that caused me grief that did not get handled very well. I had my credit card account changed to a new address and I did not make the change. LifeLock caught an address change, but had little to tell me on what I needed to do. It eventually was discovered that my card had been hacked. Luckily, I did catch it fairly quickly before too much was racked up.

It is comforting to know that my information is being monitored. I dont understand why Im only alerted when money is withdrawn, and not also when it is deposited, when Lifelock says it alerts me to "any" activity on my accounts. I also think I should be alerted a whole lot sooner than 3 days later of any withdrawls. a criminal can do a phenomenal amount of damage in 3 unchecked days

I have been hacked in two of my charge cards one only 2 weeks ago. So I understand no one has tried to get loans or open anything in this past month but there should be something to protect my charge cards. The charge was made in Europe and was taken care of right away but I had to place a couple of e-mails and speak to someone before I could open a case. Fortunately, the charge was deleted before another could be charged. I chose to closed that account that was the second time in the past year.

I ran into a problem the other day and when I called, someone named Cris answered and I could hear other people in the background talking which is not usual. I asked for some info which he seemed to not want to give but when I asked the second time, he did. He then asked me if I now wanted to add my husband.... I don't have one of those, so now I'm suspicious, and now I can't get through to them by e mail... think maybe they've got a problem.

I am so glad that I have Life Lock. I upgraded in the past year to the Ultimate Plus plan and I am not seeing any difference in the information I receive. I have called about this but cannot seem to get an answer that satisfies me. I signed my daughter and son-in-law up on it a few years ago and they get information such as public record reports on a regular basis from LifeLock.

Transactions made that exceeded my limits with no notifications, when I contacted Lifelock the agent realized that there was a connection error with one of my banks. Lifelock didn't pick it up or notified me there was a problem, I wondered why I didn't get the coverage and feel a lapse like this compromises my protection. Oversite should be better at Lifelocks end.

I think lifelock is an important service.. In the past they have alerted me and I have been really happy with the service but then on Feb 23rd of this year, there was a breach and Lifelock did not inform me.. When I second breach came in March , then I learned of both.. It surprised me that they didn't notify me because usually they are on top of their game... Now I feel yes and no about them. Fearful of them missing something or not informing me...What's going on?

Please note that last year about this time I found out that my identity had been compromised and that an individual had in fact applied for Unemployment Compensation through the State of Florida using my name and Soc. Sec. number. Unfortunately, Lifelock had no idea about it. The way I found out about it is that the State sends an inquiry to the employer-which was myself. I had to fight the machinery of the State (which liberally pre- approves fraudulent applications like this without prior inquiry) to get this fraudulent activity stopped.

Thanks for being on top of everything. We appreciate your professionalism and attention to all the cyber attacks, and every concievable attack on peoples credit in todays world. This would be a hard job to do ourselves. My only criticism was when calling you, the 'voice' said they do not like to keep people on wait for more than a few minutes and then it said my call would be answered in 22 minutes. That is unacceptable. Otherwise, we feel we are in great hands. Everyone takes their job seriously and that is what makes us feel comfortable with LifeLock.

I originally signed on in 2008. Never was I contacted that there were new programs and that my program did not have the bells and whistles it originally did. also it is a pain to get your cards and bank accounts reigstered. It sometimes takes it and sometimes it does not. Also I get alerts for the least little thing. Which makes you complacent when you get a real alert.

We have been well pleased with the service. It has caught a couple of issues that were enter errors in someone applying for a line of credit that was not us. Getting the 'credit application' notices has saved us some potential headaches. The customer service with these issues have always been very professional and quick responses. In my opinion the annual rates we pay are worth the protection we provided! We have recently added our childern to the LifeLock Junior plan to protect their future credit.

My biggest complaint with LifeLock is that they only update the input from the three credit agencies once a year. Therefore, your credit score may not be very accurate. In fact, it's quite possible that your credit information shown on LifeLock could potentially be 11 - 12 months old.

I've been with the company for several years now. I wasn't concerned until recently, I went through my accounts on their system and some of them haven't been updated since March 31st ---- today is May 3rd. How are you protecting me if you haven't monitored my account in over a month??

I may upgrade my service level if I could add more or unlimited number of credit card accounts? When I mentioned this to a customer service representative, I was told to "rotate" or "recycle" my credit card account numbers around by adding and deleting them? This seemed to me to be fraud?

My identity and credit has been secure since joining LifeLock. While I cannot attribute this solely to utilization of their services as I personally attempt to be as diligent and safe as possible, I can say I haven't experienced any problems since doing so.

The service is very good, but I do not understand why the alert software cannot "learn" to recognize trusted vendors. When you have made a charge to the same vendor dozens of times, and it continues to show as an alert, that is annoying and unnecessary. I may discontinue service for this reason. Alerts should not be duplicated over and over.

When I entered my employee benefit enrollment, I used my email. When my spouse later entered his own details into Lifelock's systems, he entered HIS email. I just got an alert addressed to him -- that's disappointing. Is he getting them? Membership started 4/1 and this is my third correction. :-(

I can't really comment on anything yet as I haven't been a member for long...trying the trial period as I need ID theft protection due to Anthem Breach. And I am still having problems with it showing 100% profile complete...not sure what I am missing,

I obtained Lifelock last year after being hit 3 times, on 3 different cards. When Lifelock appeared I thought my troubles were over. Well It happened again in August. And I had to do all the front work. Lifelock eventually sent me the paperwork to finalize it. But If this happens again, I don't see any use for this company.

I was under the impression when someone checked my credit I wiould be notified and as to who checked it. I do not get any alerts at all. I feel I am paying for something that is not protecting me at all. Why can't lifelock do something with my credit and clean it up. There are things on my report that are not mine.

I have upgraded my Lifelock coverage, and have added all of our conventional bank accounts for coverage. However, when I tried to add my wife's account with University Federal Credit Union, Lifelock did not recognize it, so I submitted a request - AND HAVE HEARD NOTHING SINCE.

Just signed up a few months ago. I like the price and I like the fact that I at least have something in place for my identity. The only complaint I have so far is that I get my alerts the next day rather thn the same day. Not sure what the point of that is. But I guess some alerts are better than none.

I've had Lifelock for a couple of years now, and though I think it is a valuable service, I have applied for credit a few times and not received contact from Lifelock which concerns me.

Lifelock is an awesome service. They are right on it within minutes after I opened an account at a clothing store. The alerts are great. Would not ever think about not having this service.

I just applied for a credit card this weekend and I was under the impression that your service will notify me that a company was checking on my credit report but I was dissapointed that I didn't get any notifications.

It does not tell me how to fix certain problems. My report just dropped for no reason and I don't know why. I think they should show an exact reason and why it happened so someone doesn't have it happen again.

We've had LifeLock on my account and my husbands for probably for or 5 years. I can't say I'm real impressed. I usually hear the news in the media before I get an email from them. I need to look and see what all they are supposed to cover because I had a credit card hacked and almost $5,000 charged and didn't hear a thing from LifeLock.

Lifelock is totally transparent, always there, and a necessity in my opinion! Only negative comment is that it is somewhat hard to reload files after a disc crash.
