Identity Theft Protection

LifeLock provides several identity theft protection services in an effort to catch identity theft and identity fraud before it happens.

LifeLock customers can receive credit monitoring services (See disclaimer below) from all three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion), dark web monitoring, data breach notifications, social security number monitoring, financial account monitoring, and more.

What is identity theft and am I at risk?

Identity theft is a crime in which someone accesses information to commit fraud, typically by getting false credentials, opening new accounts in someone else's name or using someone else's existing accounts. In the United States, identity theft is a serious crime. You can take steps to help avoid having your identity stolen, but first, you'll need to know how identity theft occurs and how to spot it.

How does identity theft happen?

There are a lot of ways identity theft can happen to you. Hackers may get your information from a data security breach. Or, you may unknowingly provide it on social media, during conversions others can hear or by leaving financial documents in unsafe places. That information may include:

  • Full name, address and birth date
  • Social Security number
  • Car insurance or medical insurance account numbers
  • Credit card or bank account numbers
  • Details that can tip off people to your account recovery questions, such as your mother's maiden name or your home town

With this information, criminals could impersonate you, max out your credit cards, rent an apartment, steal your frequent-flyer miles or act out in a number of other ways.

What types of identity theft are there?

You've probably heard about — or have experienced — thieves stealing credit card numbers or money from a bank account. To help catch this kind of identity theft, set up account alerts, scan your credit card and bank statements, and look for charges you don't recognize.

Types of theft to look for include: 

  • Tax identity theft — A crook files a tax return in your name and steals your refund.

  • Dumpster diving — A thief sifts through your garbage can. Discarded checks and credit card statements are just two sources of valuable personal information.

Online:

  • Public Wi-Fi –— Public Wi-Fi usually doesn't encrypt data, so anyone with the Wi-Fi password and some hacker know-how can monitor what you see and what you send. The hacker could commit identity theft if he or she intercepts your information.
  • Unencrypted websites — Make sure a website is encrypted before you use it for a financial transaction. Typically, you'll see a picture of a lock in the URL field, and the URL will contain "https," meaning it's secure.
  • Phishing — When thieves contact you from a phone number or email address tailored to look familiar and trustworthy, their goal is to take personal information from you.

What should I look out for and what are warning signs of identity theft?

Beware of emails that have bad spelling or grammar, an unprofessional email address, urgent requests for information, or any type of attachment or link. 

Also look for these common warning signs from the FTC:

  • Withdrawals from your banking account that did not come from you
  • Bills you generally get are no longer coming to you
  • Calls about debt that you do not owe
  • Unfamiliar charges to your account
  • Medical bills for service you did not receive
  • A letter from the IRS stating more than one tax return was filed in your name or that you have income from an employer you never worked for
  • A company where you do business notifies you that your personal information was accessed in a data breach
  • A sudden drop in your credit score online

How do I recover from identity theft?

It happens, and reacting quickly might be the most important thing to do when it does.

Follow these steps if you are a victim of identity theft: 

  • Inform the business where your information was misused about the fraudulent activity. Close these accounts.
  • File a police report.
  • Contact the three major credit reporting bureaus — TransUnion, Equifax and Experian — and consider putting a fraud alert on your credit. This ensures future creditors will take extra steps to verify your identity first.
  • Consider a credit freeze, which is stronger than a fraud alert and ensures no one can use your credit to open new accounts. You'll still need to monitor existing accounts.
  • If you don't have a credit monitoring account, consider setting one up.
  • Change your passwords, so they're strong and unique, for all your online accounts.

What can I do to protect myself from identity theft?

No one can prevent all identity theft, but there are ways to help protect yourself. You can read about ways to help protect yourself from identity theft in more detail online, but some basic precautions include:

  • Avoid carrying your social security number, and keep it in a safe place. Do not give out the number unless it’s absolutely necessary.
  • Don’t respond to unsolicited inquiries about your personal information like phone number, email address, name, bank account information, etc.
  • Always collect your mail as quickly as possible and place a hold when you’re away. 
  • Enable the security features on your mobile devices.
  • Contact your financial institution if statements are late.
  • Review your credit card and financial statements for unauthorized transactions.
  • Shred any mail or document that contains personal information.
  • Install firewalls and virus-detection software on your home computer.
  • Use complex passwords and change them periodically.
  • Review your credit reports annually. You can get a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus once a year.

Way too expensive for an ineffective service. My husband and I had about 5 id theft attempts in a year. Lifelock did not report One incident, but the banks/credit card companies did! Useless and overpriced. I signed up with Zander Insurance for a fraction of the price ($145/yr), and it includes my entire family, even minor children. Oh, and the credit card that was used for recurring billing was compromised too, and again Lifelock had no clue. Chase bank called me immediately and shut the card down.

Opened savings account at new bank. All personal information entered by new bank. Informed by manager that I would receive email or text soon from LifeLock. Not a single notification. Called them to complain. Oh well... we don’t report on all new account activity. We don’t monitor all financial institutions. What good are they???

I had an issue with someone opening a fraudulent credit card in my name. I had LifeLock for over 6 years when this occurred. LifeLock sent an alert within a couple of hours of the credit inquiry. That is the good part. Other than sending me an alert about the credit inquiry, they really were no help with anything else. Their customer service is very inefficient and frustrating to deal with. They seem to be compartmentalized regarding their operation and no person I spoke with knew what the other was doing. When I called I always talked to a new person who had not reference for my issue, and I had to keep regurgitating the facts over and over again. LifeLock's 1 Million insurance will not cover any legal fees if you plan on bringing an action against the credit card company, who in my case was grossly negligent. I called the credit card company myself, but got the run around. I then contacted the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and made an online complaint through them. Believe it or not, I got an email from the executive office of the credit card company within 48 hours referencing my complaint with the CFPB, and after a week or so the credit card company acknowledged their mistake. IMHO, LifeLock's service is overpriced for what you get compared to other service providers.

My CPA informed me that someone used my social security number fraudulently to obtain a tax refund. I immediately called LifeLock and reported it. The representative promised to email me some forms, but I never received any emails. I contacted them by email and received no answer. I have their most comprehensive plan, and expected at the very least, for them to do what they said they would do.

If anything I get too many notifications for accurate purchases and monthly bill payments that I have to clear. Shouldn't it remember these? Is this a waste of money or is it really working? My wife got phone calls from LifeLock saying they couldn't complete my membership. But in the US Mail I got my membership card and LifeLock ID number. I went online and set up my password and entered my financial information to be protected. My wife continued to get phone calls saying my membership was being held up for lack of information. So it just made me feel like the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing down at LifeLock. That didn't give me a safe feeling about my information being secure.

However Discover did Thank God.My wife's Cabela's credit card number was being fraudulently being used. No notice from LifeLock..Good thing Cabela's was on top of it. On December 9th I had 3 identity theft incidents, but you did not detect any of these. Someone hacked my cell phone, bought a phone, changed 5 Gbytes of data to my monthly bill and switched one of my cell phone numbers to their phone. Someone also opened a charge at Kohls, got $1,000 credit and maxed it out with the purchase of Gift Cards. Someone also tried to open a Target credit card but it was denied. You tell me that you protected my identity, but you did not detect any of this. I would think you should have caught the Kohl's credit card at least.

I am unsure about your protection, as someone ordered a credit card from chase bank using my name and address. The card came to me and I called Chase and notified them it was fraud. The card was cancelled immediately, but my credit score went down.

I haven't been getting notifications on my banking since 8/23 and now I went online to investigate and saw that my banks were " offline" and I had to reenter my login and password AND my credit score has dipped 18 points and I wasn't notified of that either. Kinda wondering why I am paying for this and thinking of canceling it

What's the use of a so called "alert" if it's 2-5 days after the transaction? They keep giving me BS reasons for the slow "alerts". My bank IMMEDIATELY texts & emails me for the same transactions. I think I'm going to drop them after this year's enrollment period ends.

I'm not sure what Life Lock checks as I've applied for loans, etc and never received an alert from Life Lock. I recently received an email stating that there were no issues in the past month but that email does not arrive very often.

I also bought a new car three months ago and that activity on my credit report has still not been noticed by you. I'm not impressed with the service.

Have not received any email communications from Lifelock in two years beyond the considerable junk file advertisements to join Lifelock. The few times I called to speak directly with a Lifelock agent, I was frustrated with the rudeness and lack of knowledge of the agent. I am unsure what services you are providing for me and my wife and will probably not renew or recommend your services to my friends.

They are good about alerting you of credit issues and registered sex offenders in your area. I have been very satisfied with there service. However Billing ins a nightmare. It is Automated and only automated. There is no way for you to pay your bill if the card you have on file with them is declined payment for some reason. I tried calling customer service to pay and also tried logging in to pay through my account on there website. It only allows automated payments. in the mean time they call several times a day saying that they are going to cancel my protection yet they are unable to take payment. What kind of crap is that!!! And the customer service rep hung up on me when I called and was trying to pay my bill. No very happy about this.

I takes LifeLock three to four days before notifying me of an account activity. (My Credit Union notifies me the same day of the activity) For some reason, LifeLock is unable to maintain a connection with my Credit Union and I'm having to "reconnect" often. This is unacceptable. I will not be renewing my account or recommending LifeLock to anyone unless this trend improves.

I have had LifeLock for about 6 months, they have caught most attempts to gain access to my credit save one... Someone tried using Paypal to get credit under my name, Transunion caught that one, Lifelock missed it. never got an alert or so much as a peep. Transunion was the hero that day.

I was recently a victim of identity theft with Lifelock ultimate fully in place (and billed monthly). My taxes were filed "for me" by a thief who pocketed a large refund both federal and state. When I called Lifelock, I was told "we don't cover tax fraud". Really?! You guys advertise like mad around tax time, motivating people that tax fraud is on the rise and they should be protected. That being said, I have not been contacted by any lifelike representative since I reported my problems.

I believe they are doing a very good job, but it is too difficult to get to talk to someone that can answer pointed questions. This is still a problem, even though I have asked to speak to someone or have them initiate a call back to me so that I can answer verifying questions before asking mine. My initial membership was through my bank which has stopped participating. The net result is that before I add my wife to the account, I have to get some answers or it will not happen. Also, if it is this difficult to talk to someone, I am not sure how responsive they would be in a real negative situation.

I don't know what you are doing for me. I see no activity on this website since April 2014!! Nothing is up-to-date as far as my financial activity. I've been a victim of tax fraud (for the last two tax filing years) and identify theft using my social security number and other personal information, which I reported to you. My Wells Fargo acct was compromised three times in March.Someone cashed 3 bogus checks that I did not write. Wells Fargo put the money back into my business savings acct. and reimbursed the fees that were charged against my acct. Last year $6,000.00 dollars of bogus checks were written on the same acct. I was reimbursed everytime by Wells Fargo. Lifelock does not seem to be working for me. Someone also tried to access my Pay Pal acct from Venzuela, but they stopprd it.

I received an email in French thanking me for opening an account with them. When I called in regards to this possible identity theft, I was told by the LifeLock representative, that they don't deal with outside the US, and that they could not help me. I find nothing in their advertising that indicates this coverage is only in the US. The equates to false advertising as far as I am concerned. Many of the cyber and phising attacks come from overseas. Perhaps they are making money off our fear instead of doing their job. I haven't heard any stories about people being helped by LifeLock to restore their Identities. When I called American Express, they took a report and told me they would research it and if they found fraud would pursue the matter. I don't even pay them to watch for Identity theft.

After completing an email inquiry that was generated from a Life Lock alert, the email response took several days then the response was to resubmit the request via my Life Lock account. In the meantime, the issue at hand continues to be a problem. This system is not at all what I expected it to be. I am not very satisfied.

I gave had Life lock for the last few years. I was a little disenchanted with my renewal rate for 2015 going up 35% for myself and my wife. The service us good but that is a pretty steep increase so I will be looking elsewhere.

For a new member, the time from sign up to getting any type of instruction is very poor. (Wait time on phone is also bad.) We are not very computer savvy and still have not received anything in writing as to how the whole thing is supposed to work. We are just figuring out how to respond to alerts.
