ATTENTION: ITAC Sentinel's web portal, along with any accompanying information about this identity protection service, is only accessible to customers who have received a letter from their bank containing a username and PIN. Information found in this review has been extracted from news stories following the JP Morgan Chase and TD Bank (companies that contracted ITAC Sentinel's services) data hacks in 2012 and 2013.

Despite these endorsements, ITAC Sentinel is NOT a recommended company, and customers are strongly encouraged to investigate our top identity theft protection companies before making a decision.

Identity Theft Assistance Center (ITAC) is a branch of Intersections Inc. ITAC is a nonprofit organization of financial services companies that came together with the goal of protecting their consumers from identity theft. Since its creation in 2004, ITAC has helped tens of thousands victims restore their financial identities. ITAC Sentinel offers their ITAC Victim Assistance program to all consumers, which helps victims of identity theft with information which is designed to guide them in restoring their identity.

Identity Protection

The Good

  • $9.99-$17.99/month
  • Equifax, Experian, TransUnion Credit Monitoring
  • 10 Years Experience

ITAC Sentinel uses Internet Surveillance which helps reduce your risk of identity theft online by continuously searching the Internet for signs that your registered bank accounts, credit accounts, and Social Security Number are potentially at risk.

ITAC offers three identity monitoring and protection plans: Sentinel, Sentinel Plus, and Sentinel Premium. Each plan covers credit monitoring, credit card theft protection, and identity protection insurance coverage by AIG. Differences in the coverage include the amount of available insurance coverage, number of credit bureaus monitored, and the availability of credit reports and scores. The highest-tiered plan is the only plan which includes public record reports and monitoring.

The Bad

  • Limited Recovery Services
  • Only $20,000 Insurance Amount
  • No Antivirus Software Included
  • No Free Trial Offered

Each of ITAC Sentinel identity theft insurance policies includes a $250 deductible. Most identity protection policies offer a $0 deductible.

ITAC Sentinel does not have a full-service lost wallet protection, but it does offer card theft protection. This protection will perform only some of the same functions a lost wallet protection provides. Card Theft Protection uses their team to cancel/and or reissue members’ credit cards in the event of a lost wallet. The Lost Card assistance does not include restoring driver’s licenses, Social Security cards, insurance cards, or checkbooks.

ITAC’s services are fairly basic and the lower-tiers of protection have limited credit monitoring and credit report refreshes. Some customers have complained about not receiving alerts or the alerts being delayed. Customer service for ITAC has been another source of complaints by its customers, with complaints about a lack of transparency about the actual coverages.

ITAC does not offer a trial period for its services.

The Bottom Line

ITAC Sentinel has A+ BBB Rating (Intersections, Inc.). The basic package offered by ITAC does not include access the full benefits of identity protection, but it does allow customers some basic tools to protect their identity and some assistance in restoration, which is slightly more complete than some of the basic packages offered by other companies.

ITAC Sentinel has some of the tools considered critical to provide comprehensive identity protection services, but there are some holes in their coverage. Many find the more affordable price structure appealing. However, as ITAC Sentinel only appears to be available to customers whose bank’s data has been hacked, and zero information is provided online, the service is difficult to recommend, and customers are encouraged to investigate full-service identity protection companies that offer services directly to consumers.

I had a Chase Idenity Protection Program with My bp Visa for 7 yrs. Their program was satisfactory until Chase sold or Eliminated that business & recommended ITAC in May of 2012??, I believe. It was a Great Move taking Chases advice as ITAC does a Fantastic Job!! They have a ‘Total Package Deal’, if You will. Most Companies these days seem to hire Employees overseas. You might get Phil from the Phillipines, Tammy from Tiawan, Newt from New Dehili, Vicky from Vietnam etc etc. with ITAC You get an All American staff out of New Mexico, ALL speak English!! They r Efficent, Knowledgeable, Explain Anything & Everything in Layman’s terms, Friendliest Customer Service organization I Hv EVER dealt with & Most Importanty,They CARE!! I also have LifeLock which costs more, not nearly as Friendly, Efficeceny is Satisfactory at Best & after reading the reviews I reccomend ITAC Sentinel to ANYONE!! I have the Plus+ package but My Son has the basic & there is Very little difference. I give them a 10!! Dale Siler Raleigh NC:

I tried to call their customer service number to ask a simple question.
    1. They put one through a whole series of “offers” and THEN I got a message saying the toll-free number for my are had been changed.
    2. When I tried to call THAT number, busy forever! (It is probably off the hook, as we used to say.)
    3. Their website has no e-mail contact available, only snail mail. All so unprofessional! Ugh.

I received this service originally thru my bank and have continued to keep it for information updates but just now Completely disappoionted with this company’s Customer Service response to my account being “cancelled” without notifying me. Apparently possible “Fraud Alert” activity on my bank card caused the card to be pulled and I waited for a new card to be issued – ITAC was not able to run the card for charges and they silently dropped me –no notice. Seems a Credit Monitoring Company would get the concept of a credit bank card being cancelled due to Fraud. They claimed to have sent a letter to my P.O Box during December Holiday time which I never received – no request for a new payment card – nothing. Just spoke to their Customer Service rep and she in one breath told me I was cancelled and unable to re-enroll as they are not taking on any new customers….”but we thank you for your membership”….They recommended Costco Website for Identity Guard?? moving on…..

I received this service free thru TD Bank because their system was hacked and my account number was compromised. The services were ok considering that I didn’t pay for it. If the reports were more detailed like the ones you get annually I would pay for it. I did like the updates when something changed on my report however.

It should not be legal for them to pursue me for a watchdog fee for a dead person’s credit card. The bill only said to pay by credit card that doesn’t belong to me because I don’t have one. Why don’t they tell me what to do to resolve the matter and close the account.
