Paycor vs ADP

Whitney Troxel | Contributor

On paper, ADP and Paycor are pretty evenly matched. Both platforms offer a variety of HR solutions. Both have multiple decades of experience in the HR industry. The main difference is ADP serves everything from small businesses to enterprise level companies while Paycor focuses on small to medium-sized businesses.

However, customer reviews show a larger difference between the solutions. ADP averages a 3.4 star review while Paycor only has a 1.5 star rating. Poor reviews does not always mean a poor product. If a company has a below average customer review rating, we strongly recommend performing thorough research on the company and product before making a purchase. Have detailed conversations with the sales agent and don’t be afraid to ask difficult questions. If you are not confident an HR software platform will work for your business, look for other solutions.

I have used Paycor for 9 years and love how they keep adding functionality without billing me like my previous provider did. The support we get is unmatched! Couldn't imagine using a different solution.

Zero support. Like NONE. You email, they never respond. You email again, and again, and again, they never respond. I honestly don't know how a company that performs this terribly has so many customers. We're in the process of moving to ADP and Paycor was nice enough to shut off our account 60-days early, even though our agreement clearly states we should have full access for those 60-days. Paycor really needs to understand the importance of support and invest in it. Clearly that is not a priority for them. A couple quick searches on Google or Twitter will show you that.

I enjoyed using ADP as an employee to track my hours and what not - but the app was a little difficult to maneuver. Overall, however, I enjoyed being able to use my fingerprint to login at the work place instead of having to type in the code.

Worst company ever. Avoid ADP and go with any other company. We just transferred to Heartland payroll, but use anyone else beside ADP. We have had late tax payments because of ADP, we are on hold for 45 minutes every time, there is no email support. We are trying to cancel service, but they keep on billing us. Do not use ADP.

The Final Word

How do you decide between two solutions that seem very similar on paper? The best way is to utilize the sales agent. Do your research and come prepared to every meeting with questions. Talk about the specific challenges you’re facing and ask how their software can solve it.

Services and Features

The best way to evaluate features is to see them in action. Take advantage of demos and free trials; they give you the opportunity to see how the software functions in real-life situations. ADP offers a free trial of its payroll feature. Paycor doesn’t have any information about a free trial on its website, but it does have a guided walk through of the product.

Mobile Applications

Mobile applications are becoming increasingly important as the next generation enters the workforce. Employees are used to being able to access everything from mobile devices.

App Store Rating Google Play Rating
ADP 4.7 (1.2 million reviews) 4.4 (200,000+ reviews)
Paycor 4.7 (13,000+ reviews) 4.6 (18,000+ reviews)

Business Growth

Whatever HR software solution you choose should be able to grow with your company. Before deciding which solution works best for you, look at your growth projections for the next three to five years. Both ADP and Paycor serve small to medium-sized businesses. However, if you’re expected to grow beyond that, ADP serves large and enterprise level businesses.
