Sentric HR has been in business for 20 years. The company was started in 1994 as a regional services bureau, providing the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and other companies in the area with payroll and HR services. The customer base of the company includes thousands. The company is currently in the process of expanding and has regional offices in Huntington Beach, CA and Denver, CO. By the mid-2000’s the company was small, but profitable and stable. The company was growing at about 10 to 12 percent per year. At this time, the company decided to also include HR as part of its online solution. The pricing option is pretty straightforward. Based upon the service level you desire, you play a flat fee per month per employee. There are some costs that are not included on the website, but we found that Sentric HR has a pretty accurate quote tool. We built a “basic” solution for our theoretical small business of 50 employees and found that we wouldn’t be paying more than $450 per month.

The Good

With Sentric, as we mentioned, we really like the pricing. We felt that Sentric offers three comfortable price levels at $3, $6, or $12 per employee per month. This is a great option for scaling the HR and payroll functions of the product to suit your business needs. The three service levels require at least 25 employees. Here are the features for the Starter, Pro, and Premium plans: Starter:
  • Employee Profiles
  • Document Storage
  • Absence Management
  • Standard and Ad Hoc Reporting
  • Performance Tracking
Pro:
  • Everything in Starter
  • Employee and Manager Self-Service
  • Routes and Alerts
  • Document Management
The Premiere plan includes everything from the Pro service level. Ultimately, we found that it let the business also set goals, do recruitment, training, and more. In the HR industry, we found that Sentric HR is one of the best platforms for automating time-intensive administration tasks. We found that employees could access their onboarding resources, such as training materials. Here are some of the tasks that Sentric lets employees complete themselves:
  • Scheduling
  • Pay Statements and History.
  • Tax-Information access.
  • Update and sign personal information and electronic documents.
While the attendance features only come with the Premium version, we found that you can include biometric or time clocks, web-based punching, and mobile punching for your customers. There are also compliance tools built into the attendance paradigm, including:
  • ACA employer calculations and full-time employee eligibility.
  • Tracking and notifications to manage full-time status preferences.
  • Resources for integrating federal, state, and local labor laws into your Sentric platform.
Essentially, the Premium service level is very important if you have a lot of employees in your company who might be eligible for ACA - tracking. The other added benefits with Sentric include talent management. Here are some of the benefits that are associated with the talent management functions of Sentric:
  • The ability to find the best-fit candidates.
  • Easily move your applicants through the interview process and drop low-priority candidates.
  • Find the perfect-fit candidate more easily.
With Sentric, your company can build job descriptions that include powerful assessment questions. You can manage your job postings on external websites, as well as conduct side-by-side comparisons of applicants. There are also ways to prioritize candidates based upon scoring and evaluation tools contained within the system. Onboarding is also possible with Sentric. We found that company policies and procedures can be added and updated with the document storage and management capabilities. We also found that key documents can be signed and verified, such as I9s, W4s, etc. This makes it easy to bring your new employees in the organization and communicate with them before they start on the first day.

The Bad

Sentric seems to be one of the premiere HR software systems in the industry, but we did have a few concerns with their platform. For example, we didn't find any social media integrations on the website. The website also lacks specifics about certain functionalities of the software. We wanted to find out:
  • The full customizations that we could make to the portal.
  • The mobile app was not displayed on the web page.
  • The document sharing and management capabilities that were advertised.
Another issue with the website was that it loaded very slowly. Several times, we had to refresh the browser in order to find the information that we wanted. Sentric's quoting tool is not that good. While it included a means to figure a ballpark quote for the year, we found that it did not include the optional setup fees for the Concierge support and setup. We are also unsure of the external third-party app capabilities of Sentric. It is possible to do job postings, but we don't know which job boards are supported. Email capability is built into the system, but we'd like to know if all calendar and email platforms are fully supported. What types of technology does Sentric work with? We found that Kronos and Sage also had time clocks available for businesses, as well as customizable badges. As of right now, we don't know which pieces of hardware, besides the computer, work with Sentric.

The Bottom Line

Overall, we recommend Sentric HR for medium-sized (50) to large businesses. We found that the pricing platform is scalable, depending upon the number of employees in your company. However, the Sentric website is missing a few critical details, such as a list of third-party apps that work in the platform. We would also like to see certain features of the software, such as mobile punching, better demonstrated on the website.
