The Good

  • Services
  • Program development
  • Experience
Criteria's HireSelect service allows companies to implement a state-of-the-art employee testing program quickly and cost-effectively, without needing to spend money on costly test consulting services. HireSelect delivers a service that demystifies the employee testing process while simultaneously adhering to the highest scientific standards. HireSelect consists of 1,100 job profiles, and recommends a customized test battery based on the skills and abilities required for a particular job. You can customize these batteries by adding or removing tests based on the specific job requirements at your organization. HireSelect provides help with test selection, analytical tools that provide suggested score ranges and additional data to help you interpret scores, and the ability to deliver online applications or gather resumes from applicants. Pre-employment testing can help ensure alignment between the employee selection process and desired business outcomes such as lower turnover, increased sales, and higher customer satisfaction. These tests measure attention to detail, critical thinking, grammar, honesty, leadership, math skills, motivation, reading comprehension, and spelling, allowing companies to narrow down the skills needed from each individual employee to best fit the specific position they are looking to fill. Testing links can be put directly into a job posting, your applicant tracking system, or they can be performed on site for additional customer ease. HireSelect does not require per-test fees which allowed the buyer to test more applicants and to test early in the hiring process to find the candidates best suited for any position. The HireSelect program was developed by Critera Corp's Scientific Advisory Board which is made up of leading psychologists and test development experts from Harvard University, Penn State University, Stanford University, and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. With Criteria's almost 10 year presence in the market they have developed an impressive cliental list including many top names throughout the primary industries in which they have developed tests for. HireSelect allows companies to gather objective, reliable information on their prospective employees, while saving time and money in the hiring process. Because the client company is in control of the testing process they are able to save money by not having to hire private, or third party, consulting firms to do their employee testing for them. Another benefit to using pre-hire test software like HireSelect is that the proper use of testing as a selection tool should actually reduce the likelihood of being sued. This is because testing makes the selection process fairer and more objective for all candidates. Tests are less subjective than interviews, where the personal biases of interviewers are much more likely to lead to discrimination claims. Pre-employment tests can only reduce a company's legal exposure if the tests measure skills and traits that are related to performance for that particular position. Ensuring a testing program is legally compliant, following the rule of job-relatedness, will allow a company to be confident that its testing program will be effective, because the tests will be measuring job-related abilities, skills, or traits.

The Bad

  • Free trial limitations
  • Transparency
  • Not 100 percent accurate
While offering a free 30 day trial it does limit you to 20 tests total and it does not appear to be available for new hire use until a subscription has been purchased. Pricing information is very vague on the website and a consultation, either by phone or email during regular business hours, is required to get any pricing information. No basic base prices are listed; instead all pricing is based off the customer company's size, which includes customer ranges from 3-person medical offices to Fortune 500 companies with more than 10,000 employees. There is also no online support available for test takers who may be taking tests from a home computer while applying for positions. HireSelect is very specific to applicant testing. Unlike other in-office HR software options it is limited to candidate management only and does not support any other HR employee processing options. The tests are not 100% accurate and on occasion "outliers", who are found as exceptions to the rules, are discovered when compared to the general/larger sample size. These testers, who fail certain criteria within the customized score requirements, are often found in companies who are testing out the software to determine if it will be a fit for their company. These anomalies do happen although it is a rare occurrence.

The Bottom Line

Criteria's HireSelect is a good option for companies who are looking to hire the right people in the right places with very little time, and money, wasted. It gives companies of all sizes the confidence and security that they are finding the most qualified hires for each position. It also allows companies to find new hires that may not have originally come into their field of focus based on limits existing in current resume search/filter programs and other traditional hiring practices. However, on the other hand, it may cause potential well suited candidates to slip through the system because their skill sets are found through more personal methods beyond testing. Although potential outliner candidates are rare through current testing standards they do occasionally exist. To help reduce potential errors, tests are customizable to make sure that those who are searching for employment are job-ready before walking in the door for their first interview. Criteria also has a diverse selection of industry tests which allow companies in almost every field, and of every size, to benefit from their product. Because of their vast testing options, Criteria is able to save companies time and money by bringing their recruiting programs back in-house and allowing them to refrain from hiring out to third party consulting firms while still maintaining a professional and unbiased approach for hiring new employees. For any company looking to streamline their hiring practices, Criteria's HireSelect would be a good fit.
