Residence Inn is a brand offered through Marriott International. It was founded in 1975 as an option for guests looking for extended stay solutions. The mission behind Residence Inn properties is stated quite clearly in their slogan, "It's not a room. It's a Residence." With over 600 locations found in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, guests can typically find a Residence Inn in a desired city or high-attraction area. It is still owned and operated by the same parent company that founded it, Marriott International.

The Good

  • Amenities and services
  • Room options
While Residence Inn is designed to satisfy the needs of guests staying for longer periods of time, guests are not required to make long room reservations. However, since Residence Inn is an extended stay hotel chain, they offer a number of services typically found in up-scale hotels all for a reasonable nightly rate. The amenities and services available at Residence Inn locations go above and beyond that of the standard hotel experience. Granted, Residence Inn is trying to make guests feel as at home as possible. Residence Inn does still offer the typical service, but also include several other services usually included in the room rate. Residence Inn amenities include:
  • Daily Hot Breakfast: complimentary breakfasts with healthy options available to all guests
  • Groceries: for those who want to cook themselves can have groceries delivered right to their door
  • Wi-fi Connection: free, fast, and secure wi-fi available to connect to
  • Fully equipped kitchens: includes full-sized refrigerator, stove, microwave, and coffeemaker
  • Laundry: both on-site laundry and dry cleaning available
  • Accommodations: most locations have pools, lobbies, fitness centers (equipped with TVs), outdoor spaces with barbecue and fire pits, and complimentary Paul Mitchell products
The suites themselves create a more home-like environment. Typically, Residence Inn suites are much larger than the standard economy hotel room. Standard suites usually hover around 450 square feet, whereas two-bedroom suites are usually 750 square feet. There is a pricing difference between the two floor plan layouts. There are four suites available for reservation:
  • Studio Suite: includes 1 television, free wi-fi, spacious bathroom and bedroom and it sleeps 1-4 people with living room and sofa bed.
  • Bedroom Suite: in-suite work space with fully equipped kitchen and dining bar. Bathroom has an extra large shower and there are two televisions. Also sleeps 1-4.
  • 2 Bedroom Suite: sleeps anywhere from 1-6 people and comes with two separate bedrooms. Also includes an in-suite work space, fully equipped kitchen, dining area, two bathrooms, and 3 televisions.
  • Penthouse Suite: also sleeps 1-6 people with a large living room and sofa bed. Bi-level floor plan with separate bedroom and separate sleeping loft. There is an in-room work space and fully equipped kitchen with dining area. Two bathrooms with separate vanity areas and 3 televisions.

The Bad

  • Not geared towards families
  • Higher rates
  • Limited locations
Residence Inn by Marriott tries to provide their guests with all the necessities typically found at home without charging outrageous rates. That being said, the design of the hotels definitely is geared towards servicing one type of guest - those staying long-term for business. With a number of scheduled social and networking events, the Residence Inn is a quality solution for those traveling for longer periods of time for work. The Residence Inn properties are not necessarily designed to support a traveling family or adventure seekers. Since the Residence Inn is specifically designed to accommodate one group, there are some things guests should be aware of prior to booking a room or suite. This includes:
  • Higher rates - while rates would be considered low for long-term stays, that is not the case for just one or two nights
  • Limited locations - there are Marriott hotels everywhere, but Residence Inn locations are sparse compared to other branches of the organizations
gavel

The Bottom Line

Residence Inn provides their guests with a number of standard and luxury-based services to accommodate those staying for longer periods of time. Those who decide to book a room or suite at a Residence Inn property can expect the following:
  1. Large suites - complete with a number of extra amenities
  2. Standard and extra amenities - ranging from free breakfasts to grocery delivery
  3. Higher rates - on average, nightly rates will be more expensive than economy hotel rooms
  4. Limited locations - not available in all cities

There are many hotels but Residence Inn has always been a favorite of ours. My wife prefers the locations, amenities and pricing. I like the rooms and food service options. I will always consider Residence Inn first on every vacation.

Being a Marriott Rewards platinum member, I stay at all types of Marriott hotels all over the country. I enjoyed my stay at the Residence Inn but when I travel, I prefer to book from Courtyard Marriotts because they're usually cheaper than Residence Inn hotels. My stays at the Residence Inn was pleasant & having a refrigerator, microwave in the hotel is very helpful & convenient. The proximity of Residence Inn's near various airports is also very helpful when traveling a lot.

Stayed at the Residence Inn by Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront for two nights in the off season in October. This is the largest Residence Inn I have been to and one of the nicest. Room was ocean front with a great view from the 5th floor. Nice size and clean room with a good set of amenities like free laundry in the lobby (never seen that before) and free breakfast which was quite good. Had fast wifi too. I would highly recommend this hotel and hope to revisit it soon.

We love the Residence Inn when traveling with our family. We like that the rooms are large with kitchens that allow us to feed our kids without going out every night. The housekeeping staff keeps our room clean and responds quickly to any requests for extra pillows or blankets or towels. We can count on the front desk to answer any questions we have. The continental breakfast is a great way to start off our day.

I love the room options at the Residence Inn and that I can have a kitchen. It makes it easy to save money when traveling. I recently stayed at the Residence Inn in Las Vegas and it was nice to have the hotel feel more like home.

I love the layout of the rooms at Residence Inn when traveling with children. It is nice to have a separate sleeping area so kids can go to bed and the adults can watch a movie or socialize. I also like having access to a kitchen.

My husband and I travel a few times a year. We generally stay at Marriott properties. While we do use a variety of their properties, Residence Inn is my personal favorite. The rooms are spacious and always clean, the hotel lobby is inviting and everything is well done. The breakfast is a full breakfast and not a continental breakfast.

Residence Inn is one of our favorite places to stay. The rooms are well kept and clean and the "kitchen" facilities are a plus. They are also usually centrally located and offer a wonderful complementary breakfast. Their grounds are nice and the pool area is well worth the visit. The only negative would be that they can be a bit expensive but they are worth it!

The Marriott Residence Inn is a great place to stay for families. Each room has a separate sitting area, so kids can go to bed and my husband and I can enjoy a movie. The continnental breakfast is really nice and has a lot of options.

I think that depending on the Residence Inn you stay at, you'll have a good/bad stay. Some are newer and are pretty nice, and some are older and not as nice. If you stay in a Residence Inn, make sure it's a newer hotel if you want the nicer upgrades.

We stayed in the Residence Inn my Marriott San Diego Mission Valley for Spring Break. It was a really great hotel for families as it had a kitchenette and two separate bedrooms. Traveling with kids it was nice to have a separate rooms and everyone enjoyed the extra space. We really enjoyed the swimming pool and the free breakfast was great.

This isn't like your normal hotel. The rooms almost feel like you're staying in a apartment and you even have a full on kitchen in your room. The Beds are very comfortable and make you almost feel like home away from home.

Love the home feel at Residence Inn. They have a great breakfast, plenty of room and especially with a family you can cook and store food in the kitchen. Home away from home.

Residence Inns are awesome if you are planning on staying for multiple nights and want to have more room or cook your own meals. It's much more like a small apartment than a hotel room.
