The Home Protect Home Service Plan is offered by Cross Country Home Services. The company was founded in 1980, and is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. All repairs covered are performed by pre-screened providers, with over 40,000 HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and appliance repair professionals in the company's network of nationwide vendors; however, the company lacks the transparency of industry leaders, and may not be available in all areas (at least not through the same issuer).

The Good

  • Appliance Discount Program
  • Ease in Contacting Customer Service/Filing a Claim

Appliance Discount Program

Along with a home warranty, Home Protect customers receive a unique option to save money when purchasing a new appliance. Homeowners can save up to 30% of the suggested retail price for new appliances. Using the program is simple; customers call the toll-free number given in their welcome kit and customer service representatives assist them in buying new appliances at a discount.

Ease in Contacting Customer Service/Filing a Claim

Many home warranty providers are only available by phone during normal business hours. Representatives of Home Protect is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. This allows customers to initiate claims quickly and easily whenever the failure occurs. Claims can be filed online as well, offering added convenience to homeowners.

The Bad

  • Lack of Transparency Online
  • Unclear Availability

Lack of Transparency Online

The company does not disclose several key components to its plan. While this can be due to the fact that coverages and pricing vary by state, without some basic information, customers are not able to adequately compare Home Protect to other home warranty providers.

Unclear Availability

Along the same path as the lack of transparency, it is not clear if the company offers its home warranties nationwide or simply in some/most states. The company publishes information that it offers its product in several states as another entity, but little is said about its exact coverage area.

The Bottom Line

Customers doing comparison shopping between the Home Protect Service Plan and those that are offered by other companies will have a little more work to compare coverages, deductibles, premiums, and the cost for service calls since Home Protect lacks transparency. While a lack of transparency does not always equal poor service, it is problematic. Having access to online claims and 24/7 customer service is a feature which is often available in the highest-ranked companies. Home Protect customers are able to use both these options. The addition of a mobile app or online chat would further enhance the company's ability to serve customers quickly.

I have had Home Protect for several years and overall I have been satisfied with them....until yesterday. My furnace would not start up. It is winter in Minnesota and I have no heat. They have not been able to find anyone to come out, but I know there are companies outside their network that come out 24 hours a day. The worst was when I said I couldn't wait 5 days for heat. Temperature was in the twenties. The customer service person said it was 36 in Florida and she didn't have her heat on. I checked the temp where she was and it was 76!!! I still have no one coming and they are supposed to call me back soon. I am so disappointed. I will have to go out and get a second space heater and they are expensive to run. I do not recommend this company unless you know you will never have an emergency. Also, prepare to sit on hold for 15-30 minutes when you call. And be aware that the first time they come out they usually don't fix anything. They usually have to order parts and that takes days.

I have had a warranty thru this company for 9 months and have had a repairman out to repair my dishwasher 4 times until it was deemed that it could not be repaired and I would need a new one. I was told that the new dishwasher would be delivered and installed within 3-5 business days from the date that I approved their proposed choice. It has now been 30 days since I approved the selection and I still do not have a dishwasher installed! Every time I call customer service I am on hold for a minimum of 45 minutes then I sometimes get hung up on when they put me back on hold to check on something. I finally got a call today from the delivery company stating that my dishwasher was FINALLY in to be delivered but they said that the warranty company did not put the installation on the order and I would have to call them to have them add it! I have been on hold for another 40 minutes so far and I am still holding! I have never had such issues with customer service before with any company! I was going to upgrade my warranty to a whole home plan with them, but after this I am not only cancelling when my year contract is up, but I am certainly not upgrading and will be taking my business to a more reputable warranty company in a few months when my warranty expires! BTW - this company is also known as Sear Home Warranty Co...it was hard to find their name as they use so many alias'. Makes you wonder why they have to use so many different company names because they are trying to hide their bad reputation! I can't wait till my contract is up! What a rip off!
