The Good

  • Low Monthly Fees
  • No Professional Installation Necessary
  • Customizable Add-ons
  • Mobile Apps

Low Monthly Fees

Ring has two Protect Plans to choose from and they both have low monthly fees. Having cheaper monthly fees makes Ring more affordable for homeowners. Plan coverage and pricing is as follows:

Protect Basic (Per Camera)

  • Video recording
  • Video review
  • Video sharing
  • $30 per year or $3 per month

Protect Plus (Per Home)

  • Everything in Protect Basic Plan
  • Unlimited cameras
  • Extended warranty
  • Exclusive discounts
  • $100 per year or $10 per month

No Professional Installation Necessary

You can install Ring’s security system on your own without professional help and without any tools. You simply choose where you would like the alarm to be and wall mount it with a quick-release bracket or you can choose to use it as a handheld and set it anywhere you’d like. This is the same for the other devices in the security system, such as the motion detector and the range extender.

Customizable Add-ons

Ring allows you to expand your security system with additional protection options to fit your specific security needs. Add-on options are as follows:

  • Alarm Contact Sensor ($20)
  • Alarm Motion Detector ($30)
  • Alarm Keypad ($50)
  • Alarm Range Extender ($25)
  • First Alert Z-Wave Smoke/CO Alarm ($40)
  • Alarm Flood & Freeze Senso ($35)
  • Alarm Smoke & CO Listener ($35)
  • Dome Siren ($30)

Mobile Apps

Ring’s app allows you to remotely access your home security system from anywhere at any time. Monitoring abilities through a smartphone, tablet, or PC allow you to see, hear, and speak to anyone on your property. If there is any motion detected at your house, you will be notified immediately by an alert through the app. You can also review your security footage through the app and share it with nearby Ring users, making it easy to alert your neighbors if there is suspicious activity nearby. The app works with each Ring device, including doorbells, cameras, and your main alarm system.

Ring also has a Neighbors by Ring app designed for neighborhood watch. Its purpose is to help communities stay connected by working together to report any suspicious or crime-related activity. The app enables crime updates from law enforcement as well as from the Ring team and other neighbors using the app.

The Bad

  • Limited Sensors
  • Short Warranty

Limited Sensors

Ring’s security system package only comes with one contact sensor, a smaller number than most home security companies. However, you can add as many additional sensors as you would like for $20 each.

Short Warranty

The Ring security system only has a one-year warranty on its devices, whereas other home security companies offer longer warranties — sometimes even lifetime warranties. Make sure you trust Ring’s security system before purchasing because if it malfunctions after a year, you may have to pay full price for a replacement.

The Bottom Line

Ring seems to be a sensible choice for your home security needs. Its simplicity makes it easy for homeowners to install and manage their home security system from anywhere. Ring’s security app and Neighbors by Ring gives you additional resources to look over your house and your neighborhood through video sharing, 24/7 monitoring, and crime alerts. However, Ring’s security system bundle only has one sensor, so if you want additional ones, you have to purchase them separately. While this makes Ring’s coverage more customizable, it could be a concern for potential customers. Ring also has a brief one-year warranty for its security system. We suggest making sure Ring’s security devices are reliable before purchasing.

This is a great product. It has different options for entering your house, such as a code, and or fingerprint, etc. My only issue is the battery situation. Of course, that's our responsibility to make sure the batteries, good, but with a regular locking key you don't have to worry about that. Although I would say I would prefer the ring system to a regular locking key. I enjoy the product.

One of my favorite products I’ve ever gotten and really use frequently. The video and sound so useful. I also like the live view. One of the best thing about the Ring so far is that you can store tons of videos and they will not delete them! All other cameras have limited storage or not storage and you have to pay for the camera and service. Ring has been by far the best one!

Front door Ring works good. Had I understood that I needed to pay for an on-going service to access any kind of recordings, I may have done more comparative shopping. Overall though I like being able to see who is at the front door whether I am at home or away.

I love my ring. Ring is amazing. I have tried multiple security apps and systems and so far ring is still the best one. My only complaint is that after I inherited my uncles house I couldn’t transfer his 1 ring doorbell camera. I had left it on his account because I had access from his phone via wifi. What I forgot about was updating the 2 party authentication on his account before disconnecting his phone. So even though I’m executor and have the death certificate, phone, and his camera is shared to my phone and all 5 of my cameras share the same address as his but under my account I still have to disconnect the doorbell and wait 15 days for it to transfer to me. Yup the only huge drawback. There’s no getting around the 2 step authentication. It’s required on all accounts. The cameras themselves are really amazing and ever since a recent update you can use indoor cameras through windows and have them work at night which helped a lot because it provides security to a side of my house with no place to put a camera.

Ring is hands down the most affordable yet reliable home security companies out there! Apart from the initial product fee (199+) to buy Ring, you will spend 0$ (!) a month to protect and watch over your home for the starter kit! That’s free home security forever for as little as 200$. There are options for professional home monitoring as well, yet the Ring starter kit is easy to install as a doorbell camera and other outside cameras that detect motion, then pinging your phone to alert you to someone’s presence near your house. The only perceivable downside to Ring’s alerts on your phone for me are that 1) Ring is very reliable but can detect motion for animals and cats even if they are just driving by, and 2) Ring alerts you thru notifications (and loud alerts if you have them turned on) seemingly every few seconds… wish there was a way to specify what type of motion you want to be notified for. Other than that, very pleased with Ring and would definitely recommend!!

I like you are the one doing the monitoring. Ring gives you an alarm when the motion sensor is tripped and you can view what is happening. If action is needed, like call police, you do that. If ti is just a bear, you can ignore it or watch the show. The reason I did not give them 5 stars is Ring, which is part of Amazon, just changed the way they do 2FA. Previously, they would email you, but they have discontinued that option. Now they want to text you or have you use an authenticator app. Except when I am on the road, I access the Ring devices using either a PC or one of the 3 Kindle Fire tablets I have. Bigger screens, on the same network and no data charges. None of these does texting and I do not want to have to find my phone every time I want to access the Ring devices. The Kindle Fires are set up to use the Kindle App Store, which is very secure, but has no authenicator apps. You would think, because Amazon sold the Ring devices as being Alexa compatible using any Alexa device, before they changed the 2FA method, they would make sure the new method would work with any Alexa device. Nope! And what was wrong with email, anyway?

We like our Ring Doorbell device. It gives us peace of mind when we are not at home and it’s also a great way to let delivery drivers not to ring the doorbell if someone is asleep.

I like the products, the affordable prices are great, and the ability to connect with nearby neighbors is also excellent. My only concern is if the wifi goes out, you are defenseless. If they would come up with a backup security system that could connect via Cell signal for emergencies. I feel safer if the power went out after someone cut power to rob my house as an extreme example, but it does happen.

Generally speaking, I like the Ring product's quality and functionality. However, I do not like the monthly video storage cost. Some competitors offer limited free storage, which I think is appropriate for this type of product. I purchased the doorbell and a camera. After the free trial, I decided to sell the system and go with a competitor. If you do not mind the monthly charge, the Ring system is definitely a good system. It just isn't for me.

I was a little bit concerned with how well our ring doorbell camera would work and if it would really be worth it. I have been more than happy with how it has turned out. The picture quality is great, we can speak through it using our smart phone and are alerted with any movement near our door. It has brought some peace to our family knowing we can see what is going on in front of our house.

This thing does have all the bells and whistles! However, I don’t like that the local police can tap into anyone’s ring camera through the company. Just ask me. I’ll give you the porch bandit’s footage if needed. It just seems a little underhanded, but I am also sympathetic to police. *shrugs*

Out of all the security companies I tried, this one is much better, not the best but the customer service is great. I also love that they don't loop you in a contract and can cancel anytime. I didn't feel the need to cancel because the service is great. They can improve the products though like the cameras.

I like the ease of use of the ring device. It was easy to set up and being able to control it from my phone is great. I don't like that very shortly after I signed up, some of the features that made me choose ring changed to a higher priced subscription. Knowing that, if I had to choose, I wouldn't go with Ring but one of their competitors.

Ring has an inexpensive, user-friendly, effective product that has proven to be reliable. The only issue is determining how to use the settings so that you're notified when the slightest motion takes place, including birds and even insects.

When shopping for home security I really liked Ring because of the low cost, availability to purchase from virtually anywhere, and large camera selection. I still have not made a choice for home security but Ring is on my list for those reasons.

I think the ring cameras are very good for home security system as they cover a great deal of territory. I do hope the price can come down because they are expensive. But the saying goes you get what you pay for. I have yet to try out the floodlight that I am hoping to purchase in the near future.

It does what we need it to. Simple Phone alerts and video on the go while you're away is the best. We don't feel we need heavy duty system so this does the job. It works well sets up easy and gives us extra peace of mind. The cost is just right for us too.

We used Ring at one of our old houses and really liked it. My favorite part of the security monitoring was the doorbell camera and other cameras. Those helped the best at giving us a peace of mind. I liked that you could set it up through the app and easily be alerted to different things going on. I would recommend Ring to others.
