People looking at phones

Traveling with sensitive data can be stressful. You need to keep your information private, but you also want to access your electronics. Hot spots, chargers, and even airport security can be problematic when it comes to sensitive data. Here are seven tips to help maintain data safety while traveling:

1. Move data

Any sensitive data you have stored can be moved to the cloud. This way it can only be accessed by you or someone you have linked to. Keeping data in the cloud offers an extra layer of security when it comes to sensitive information. It also allows you to share your laptop with border agents without compromising secure data. If your laptop gets stolen, your data is secure in the cloud.

2. Two factor authentication

Two factor authentication or 2FA is a must when it comes to sensitive information. Two factor authentication uses a password and a separate device, such as your cell phone, to access your data. You can set up a two factor authentication before you leave and know that it will be difficult for someone to hack your data. Be sure to carry the phone or other device that you use as your second authentication so you are able to access your data while you travel.

3. Virtual private network

A virtual private network, or VPN, is a great way to keep your data safe. A VPN will scramble your location and encrypt your data while you are using it. There are numerous VPN’s available including HideMyAss. Features of HideMyAss include four different tariff plans, four available protocols including IPsec, L2TP, PPTP, and Open VPN, kill switch, auto-connect, split tunneling, free web proxy, and IP shuffle. All of these features work together to provide you with an excellent VPN while traveling.

4. Public USB

While it is great to see chargers available almost anywhere, you need to keep in mind that they are easy to hack. You do not want to plug your secure data into a public USB port. You should use an outlet or a portable charging system. While the chances are slim that a USB connector will be a security threat, you do not want to take that chance.

5. Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi should also be avoided when accessing your secure data. You should only connect to locked Wi-Fi systems or bring along a portable hotspot so only you have access to your data. Public Wi-Fi can be easily hacked. Keep your data safe by avoiding any free Wi-Fi access and do not access any sensitive data while on public Wi-Fi. Keep your surfing to a minimum and do not access anything with a passcode while you are connected to public Wi-Fi.

6. Avoid HTTP

Websites that begin with https are more open and unsecure. The s on the end provides extra security so you do not leave any information behind for someone to take advantage of you. Be sure your websites start with https and you will be secure in your browsing.

7. Home Security

Another crucial part of safety when traveling is home security. You likely have sensitive data in your home, whether that be on your computer, a cell phone, etc. Even if you take those items with you while traveling, consider making home security a top priority when leaving your house.

If someone broke into your home while you were away, they would have access to your sensitive data along with your other belongings. Check out the top-rated home security companies to see if a home security system is right for you.
