FlexJobs was created in 2007 to provide a trusted, more effective, friendly, and overall better way to find professional remote, and flexible jobs.

Today, FlexJobs is one of the nation's leading companies in disrupting the traditional workforce and advocating for more remote and flexible work opportunities.

FlexJobs' researchers search the web for telecommuting, freelance, and part-time jobs, so you don't have to. The company claims its staff members "hand-screen" each job and research each company to ensure the jobs in its listing are legitimate. The site also publishes information about avoiding scams and lists new job scams to watch out for.

FlexJobs is not a staffing agency, temp firm, or headhunter and cannot guarantee you will be hired.

The Bad

  • Pay to See Full Job Listings
  • Lack of Salary Information

Pay to See Full Job Listings

While you can get quite a bit of information for free from FlexJob, you need to be a paying member if you want to access a full job listing. Weekly memberships begin at only $6.95 and can go up to a year ($49.95).

Lack of Salary Information

FlexJobs does not list salary information on its available jobs. The company explains that it cannot always offer that information because not all employers want to reveal what they pay as it can affect their ability to negotiate terms, create friction between current and new employees, and decrease their competitive advantage with other companies. Although all of these reasons are plausible, knowing what the company pays can help freelancers choose the positions that meet their financial needs.

Additionally, Members are on their own when negotiating with potential employers whose jobs are posted on the site. FlexJobs does not assist in negotiating employment terms or provide any support in matters of how workers are paid.

The Bottom Line

FlexJobs provides access to thousands of jobs, many of which may suit freelancers' needs, but applying for those jobs comes with a price.

Freelancers may want to search FlexJobs' listing of available jobs first before they become a member to determine if they think they will get enough freelance work to justify the monthly subscription fee for the site.

A plus to using FlexJobs is its staff verifies the postings are from legitimate companies to reduce scams or illegal jobs. Although FlexJobs has the membership and the job listings that make it an attractive resource for freelancers, you are on your own when negotiating with potential employers or if there are issues with payment or disputes over your work product.

Getting hired for freelance jobs or a remote position on FlexJobs might be easiest for those with experience setting up contracts with customers, arranging for secure payment options, and negotiating favorable payment terms. If you are new to freelancing or remote work, you may want to start with a site that provides more support and assists with dispute resolution rather than using FlexJobs to find a job.
