Doctors Not Using Fitness Tracker Data
Is a healthcare revolution on its way? With the prevalence of fitness trackers, and apps such as Apple’s HealthKit, is it time for providers to integrate “smartphone-based healthcare” into their practices?
Not yet, says a survey by Practice Fusion, a free electronic health records provider. Of the 353 doctors surveyed, only 15% said they’ve been asked by patients about incorporating health data from fitness trackers into their health records.
“The data from apps is of little value to start with,” says CEO Ryan Howard. Despite the fact that other electronic record companies, such as Epic Systems, have already integrated with HealthKit, Practice Fusion is holding out. There are privacy rules to consider, and the fact remains that 85% of patients aren’t asking for this service.
There might be a future for this patient-led, smartphone healthcare in the industry, but it’s probably not going to be anytime soon.
