Founded in 1973, New York Sports Club (NYSC) is one of the longest standing sports clubs in the Eastern United States. With over 150 current locations across eight states and two countries, NYSC has helped hundreds of thousands of people reach their fitness goals. This gym provides many different types of equipment as well as a variety of other amenities. NYSC makes a point to personally work with each customer to help them achieve their goals. Often, this is accomplished through personal training or instructor feedback.
For those interested in using NYSC, a number of membership options are available to best cater to the service that you desire. Recently, NYSC has introduced a new membership for students between the ages of 14–22. If you would like more information about this membership, you will need to reach out to the club location you plan to attend. Here is a list of the current membership options:
These prices are not accurate for all locations. If you want to make sure this is exact pricing for the location that you plan to visit, go to the NYSC web page and select your location's pricing to verify. All memberships come with access to the locker room, training equipment, class reservation privileges, member guest privileges, free personal fitness assessment, team training, and member pricing on services.
NYSC works with companies to provide staff with gym passses as part of their health benefits package. NYSC is a huge advocate of maintaining a healthy lifestyle inside and outside of the office. As employees exercise more, NYSC believes that they will be more effective, energetic, and better prepared for the tasks presented to them.
NYSC has done a great job working to provide a number of classes for people at all skill levels. Some of the classes provided include the following:
NYSC has over 1,400 instructors and trainers in their more than 150 locations to help each customer achieve their fitness goals. To better understand fitness level and capability, personal trainers will provide a free fitness assessment to each customer. After the assessment, individuals can sign up for training sessions with a personal trainer a couple of different ways. If you have the desire to have multiple sessions throughout the month, you can do a monthly plan and pay $79 per session. If you would like to just have a session every once-in-a-while, then you can pay the $69 charge with no commitments.
As one of the only gyms available in a number of neighborhoods in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut area, it is important that the gym be family friendly. NYSC provides the following activities and group classes for children:
Each of these activities has its own dues on top of the facility membership fee. These monthly fees are specific to each location.
We have found in our research that one of the most common frustrations customers have with NYSC is the facility and/or equipment being dirty. Some long-time members have mentioned that over the past couple of years excessive dust has begun to build up on the floor and machines are getting covered in it as well. Yes, working out is a sweaty and sometimes "dirty" process, but you should not have to workout in the dirt and grime left due to the lack of consideration of the providing facility.
Another customer complaint that has been recurring over the past couple of years is the current state of the majority of the equipment. Many feel that it is out-of-date and that it needs replacing. In a number of locations, the cardio equipment has been reported as broken with the promise to customers that they will be fixed or replaced immediately, yet after months, nothing seems to happen. Some customers also feel that there is not enough equipment for all of their customers to be able to use. Many have reported having to sit and wait for equipment to become available.
Over the past couple of years, a number of NYSC members have been charged a variety of fees for canceling their accounts. After cancelling the account, prior members have mentioned that they have continued to receive charges to their cards. After having called NYSC customer service, they are sent back and forth from their location to corporate management trying to find a solution, and in the end, money continues to slip out of their credit card account. It can take months to settle this issue and working with customer service can be frustrating. If you are wanting to make sure that you are only charged for the service that you are provided, be wary as you look into purchasing a membership here unless you plan to stay with this business long-term. After all is said and done, if you feel that you have been swindled, we struggle to recommend seeking out a refund offer since most members who have had issues claim that they never received one.
Do you carry an iPod around with you when you go to exercise? Not likely. The vast majority of people that go to the gym use their cell phones to listen to music or track their exercise on an app. NYSC does not allow cellphone use in the workout areas of the gym. Phones are allowed in the main lobby, but after that, they have a strict no-phone policy. If you are planning to listen to music, you had better invest in some nice bluetooth headphones that have a crazy long reach.
