In-shape Health Clubs (ISHC) was founded in 1981 when a small racquetball club in Stockton, California was converted into a health club with a number of new amenities. Interestingly, this chain does not like its health clubs to be called "gyms" because it doesn't want people to think that it is just a place for them to work out. Its mission is to motivate communities to be healthy, fit, and happy by creating a place of belonging and human connection. This will enable clients to achieve their fitness goals. Community engagement makes this health club a safe and happy place.

The Good

  • Personal Training
  • Childcare and Kids’ Classes
  • Amenities and Classes

Personal Training

For any health club participant who currently does not participate in a lot of physical activity, working with one of ISHC's personal trainers would be a wonderful resource. Each ISHC trainer is trained to help members reach their health and fitness goals. If you are looking for a handful of training sessions with a personal trainer, you can purchase a $199 plan for four sessions. After these four sessions, you can decide for yourself if you feel that you have learned enough to take charge of your physical training or if you would like to continue with personal training sessions.

If you decide to work with a personal trainer, here are the types of service you will receive:

  • Detailed fitness evaluation and goal setting session
  • Introduction to ISHC's MOVE7 Training System
  • One-on-one training with a two-week workout plan
  • Expert advice to help you reach your fitness goals
  • Introduction to and explanations of training options at In-shape

The MOVE7 Training System only works through the constant use of movement. This program uses seven main movements:

  • Plank
  • Push
  • Pull
  • Rotate
  • Hinge
  • Squat
  • Lung

Childcare and Kids’ Classes

ISHC works hard to make sure that its facility is family-friendly. To best serve families, a number of facilities have "Kid Zones." These zones are for kids ages 12 and younger and they are separated by age. Children can be checked-in to the Kid Zone for up to two hours at a time. The purpose of these zones is to allow parents to exercise and enjoy the facility without worrying about their kids as well as helping the kids be active with the following activities:

  • Safe Space Mazes
  • Basketball
  • Soccer
  • Wii Fit Video Games

Amenities in the "Kid Zone" vary by location.

Amenities and Classes

ISHC has a reputation of providing members with a wide variety of nice equipment that has been well cared for. Most health club locations offer the following amenities:

  • Swimming pools
  • Hot tub
  • Basketball
  • Racquetball
  • WallyBall
  • Tennis
  • Cardio machines
  • Sauna/Steam room
  • Strength training equipment
  • High fitness training

A number of group fitness classes are provided at various times throughout the day. Some of these include (but are not limited to):

  • Strength classes
  • Cardio classes
  • Cycle classes
  • Mind Body classes
  • Aqua classes
  • Dance classes
  • Martial arts classes
  • Active aging classes
  • Yoga classes
  • Kids’ group classes (ages 7-12)
  • Zumba classes
  • Les Mills BodyPump
  • Les Mills BodyCombat

The Bad

  • Cleanliness
  • Cancellation Policy

When you head to your local health club or fitness center to get your daily workout in, the last thing that you need is a dirty facility. Though not consistent in all locations, health club members from a variety of locations have complained that pool facilities, saunas, and locker room facilities have been consistently dirty.

Cancellation Policy

In order to cancel your membership, you will need to send a copy to the administrative offices in Stockton, California. Once this is received, a 30-day processing period will begin before the cancellation takes effect. If any charges are due during those 30 days, it is required that they are paid.

  • Cancellation during contractual term: This applies to memberships with a set contract period. This includes the 3-month, 1-year, and 2-years contracts. If the contract is cancelled with more than six months to go, the cancellation fee will be either $250 or the total amount of the monthly payments due until the end of the contract. If less than six months remain, the cancellation fee will be $150 or the total of all remaining payments.
  • Involuntary cancellation: ISHC has the right to revoke any membership at any time if clients do not conform to health club policies. Clients are made aware of this via email.
  • Voluntary cancellation after initial contractual term: All cancellations of month-to-month memberships must be submitted in writing. As mentioned above, the request must be made 30 days in advance to ensure termination of the contract and all payments due during this 30-day period must be paid in full.
  • Cancellation due to death and disability: In order to qualify for this cancellation policy, a physician's report, diagnosis, and prognosis must be submitted to ISHC within 10 days of the claimed event. If accepted, the member will be refunded any pre-paid fees and future charges will cease.
  • Cancellation due to relocation: This applies to members who move further than 25 miles from the nearest location or other health club locations associated with ISHC. To qualify, members must provide documentation verifying relocation within 10 days of requesting a cancellation. A $100 cancellation fee may be charged if more than half of the contract term is left and a fee of $50 may be charged if less than half of the contract term is left.

Overall, the process of cancelling your membership is complicated and has many glitches.

The Bottom Line

Finding a fitness center or gym in your local area may be easy, but finding a Health Club that will help your family take your health and wellness to a whole new level is the real goal. If you are looking for a center where community engagement comes first, we recommend looking into In-shape Health Clubs as an option for you and/or your family. The amenities and pricing are comparable and competitive with other local fitness centers.

As you prepare to sign a contract, make sure that you read the small print. Don't sign a contract until you know how long it is and what all of your options are. You should also take advantage of the 7-Day Free Trial to make sure that ISHC provides what you are looking for. Overall we would recommend ISHC to those seeking to set and reach health and fitness goals.

I have liked my experience with In-Shape. The facility is large enough that I feel like I have my own space, but also everyone is friendly and they offer a towel each time I check in. The classes have been fun, and there is a large variety of machines and weights.

In-Shape is not only affordable, but their amenities are numerous. Between all types of equipment, weights, saunas, fitness classes and personal trainings, I would definitely recommend In-Shape.

I think my favorite part of In-shape Health club is how affordable it is. I feel like it can be difficult finding an affordable gym in todays day, but in-Shape Health Club makes that possible. It also has a friendly environment.

Pretty nice club. Still very much about being upsold and you have to watch them with membership fees. Make sure you know what they are signing you up for! Would be a healthier environment if they used fragrance free cleaning products.
