24 Hour Fitness has been in business for over 30 years, with 484 locations in 18 states throughout the U.S. As the name suggests, the gym is open 24 hours a day, and offers a wide range of amenities and options for varying skill levels. The company was founded in 1983 as 24 Hour Nautilus by friends Mark Mastrov and Leonard Schlemm. 24 Hour Fitness is the third largest privately-owned and operated fitness center chain behind Gold's Gym and Fitness First. It currently employs over 18,000 people in the United States, and an undisclosed number of employees working in a customer services call-centers in the Philippines and Las Vegas, Nevada. The culture at 24 Hour Fitness is designed to appeal to a wide array of people and help all of them meet their fitness goals. It is often referred to as the “melting pot” of gym chains, and fits the bill for many: from the individual with an erratic work schedule, the parent with young children, the person looking for a group fitness dynamic, to the heavy lifters. 24 Hour’s ability to meet the needs of these varying groups of people has earned it a reputation of having an inviting and dynamic culture helping people to become stronger and healthier everyday.
24 Hour Fitness charges different pricing options and contract lengths depending on what gym membership plan you select. The most popular membership is the Basic membership package. If you stay with the company for a year, your monthly fee drops to a great deal of $26.99 per month. Average membership fees run from $29.99 to $34.99/month. These fees are competitive with other fitness centers who charge over $50 to $150/month in monthly fees.
There are no hidden fees with 24 Hour Fitness: no cancellation fees, no cleaning fee and no maintenance fee. We found many gyms to have at least one hidden fee. For example, one gym we reviewed charged customers a $10 holding fee if you wanted to freeze your membership due to illness or relocation. 24 Hour Fitness is highly favorable for customers in this regard.
Access to all of its group classes comes standard with the basic membership package. Some gyms charge additional fees for group classes on top of the monthly membership dues, making 24 Hour Fitness a more cost-effective choice for fitness members. This is highly favorable compared to certain gyms who charge additional fees for some classes or who force you to upgrade to a higher-cost package in order to get unlimited access to these classes. We liked the variation of fitness classes that are available, which include cardio, Boot Camp (boxing, free weights, jumping rope, and inner class competitions), cycling, dance studios, kickboxing and martial arts, Les Mills (BodyPump), mind and body, active aging (low-impact, fitness classes for older members), strength, aqua, and Zumba classes.
Members seeking additional training can hire a personal trainer. Using the 24 Hour Fitness website you can put in your zip code to receive each gym's list of personal trainers complete with a professional image, available hours, bio and pricing. This service feature is unique compared to any of the gyms we reviewed, none of which offered profiles of each location's personal trainers like this. As you prepare to train on a whole new level with one-on-one coaching, you will be able to know exactly who you will be working with and how they can help you not only meet your fitness goals, but your health and wellness goals.
The personal trainers work with clients to help facilitate improved muscular strength, build muscular endurance, weight loss, healthy body weight, proper use of strength training equipment for weight lifting, and good workout habits for clients. Years of age, current strength, body weight, current exercise program or lack thereof, health and fitness goals, and whether or not you live a healthy lifestyle will not affect your opportunity to have one-on-one coaching with personal trainers at your local fitness center.
Regarding price, customers get to choose between packages of five or more of 25-minute and 50-minute sessions. The cost depends on how many sessions you get in a bundle package. For example, a bundle of five 50-Minute Sessions costs $365. A bundle of five 25-minute sessions is less expensive at $215. The most expensive training sessions are the twenty-session packages. A bundle of twenty 25-Minute Sessions costs $720 while a bundle of twenty-four 50-minute sessions can cost as much as $1,460.
24 Hour Fitness is one of the few gyms that actually make their personal training fees available on their websites. Most companies make customers contact them directly or participate in a free session or two before they disclose rates and package prices. This method often puts members off, since they feel trainers are upselling them to spend more money. 24 Hour's pricing is reasonable compared to its average competitors, who charge slightly more per individual session. 24 Hour Fitness Customers can save money on the lower-tiered packages.
Additional amenities for 24 Hour Fitness include:
24 Hour Fitness center offers a long list of amenities comparable with the highest-end gyms in the industry. Two features we found unique were volleyball and a Pro Shop. The majority of fitness clubs we reviewed do not offer these two amenities. A few of 24 Hour Fitness' amenities cost extra in addition to the membership fee.
Up Front Costs (sometimes referred to as ad enrollment fee) to join 24 Hour Fitness typically costs $49.99 per person. This Initiation fee can be as high as $99.99 or as low as $29.99 at peak sales times-such as the New Year. At the time of this review, 24 Hour Fitness is offering 50 percent off of the initiation fee for their All-Club Basic or Commitment Monthly Payment memberships. Customers should also be aware that they're expected to pay your first and last month's fee when you sign up as well, so the sign-up costs for this company become more expensive than initially anticipated. For example, depending on the discounts available at the time of signup, customers can expect to pay a total of anywhere between $73.48 to $123.47 when enrolling for a membership. We did not find many fitness centers who charge first and last month fees for members when signing up. Typically, gyms charge an enrollment/initiation fee along with the first month's dues. On top of the rest of these dues 24 Hour Fitness also charges a $49.99 annual fee to all members. This annual fee is charged through 24 Hour Fitness directly and it appears that it is in place instead of the renewal fees that other gyms often charge.
24 Hour's gym equipment is on-par with the best in the industry. There are a wide variety of cardio equipment including: treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and even stair-climbers there. Most of their gyms are on a two to three-month maintenance cycle and a three-year replacement cycle. Compared to many gym chains, this is a much higher standard; however, we found a large number of customer reviews for the company's competitors who complain about broken equipment that is outdated or takes a long time to get repaired. At times gym members that just wanted to go and run on a treadmill were unable to due to the lack of equipment that was in good enough condition for use. Your ability to go to a gym and have a good workout many times is directly affected by the availability of equipment. If you are worried about wasting your time and not being able to find a piece of equipment to train or get your workout in, you may want to look elsewhere.
When it comes to hygiene, customers feel that 24 hour's gyms should be cleaned more often. For instance, customers wear flip flops in the showers because the showers do not appear to be cleaned enough to be called spotless. Customers also wish there were more cleaning stations around the gym, which have only three or four in 24 Hours huge space. This would encourage people to wipe down their machines. We also recommend 24 Hour Fitness should consider using antibacterial wipes versus regular paper towels and spray, since germs can spread on the spray bottle handle.
They've got pretty good facilities and equipment and it's not terribly expensive.
Sometimes the 24 hour fitness in my town is too ill lit to feel safe. The locker rooms feel like some type of horror movie. The machine equipment was also constantly dirty. The 24 hour aspect of it was the thing that kept me going.
I am a gym rat so I have tried all gyms! This gym has good equipment and I like the accessibility. You have to bring your own towels but the gym is pretty clean.
24 Hour Fitness has great deals, especially if you dont want to commit to a several month long membership. It has everything you need, plus personal trainers who are always willing to help you with your weights or whatever you need. Its never busy.
I didn't last long because we moved. But the facility was fine, equipment was clean and worked fine. I like classes better.
I have been a member of 24 Hour Fitness and I like their no nonsense approach to working out. They provide the facilities and the extras needed and make it easy for someone like me to work out. Whenever and also a lot of wherever choices to choose from. Very clean and great people that work there that will help me with anything I need.
I love my membership at 24 hour fitness. I love that I can have access to the gym when I have the time. I love how it's clean and tailored to maybe the "not so fit" person.
I was a member of 24 Hour Fitness in Las Vegas, when I lived there. They had a beautiful new facility that had all the equipment that I needed, plus the classes for what I enjoyed doing, like Zumba and cycling. The facilities were clean and I could go anytime day or night, thus the 24 Hour title.
24 Hour Fitness is so nice to use as a gym. I love that they are open 24 hours and their machines are always in the best shape.
24 Hour Fitness is one of the best gyms I have been to. They have great prices and even better services.
Terrible customer service and a ton of hidden fees. They will charge you $49.99 in "annual fees" and $12 if you freeze the membership. In addition, they will say things like "your rate is $49.99" but actually bill you $79.99 for months on end until you check your bank statement and realize you're paying 150%+ of what you were supposed to. DO NOT gym with them.
I am in love with 24 Hour Fitness. The fact that they are open all day is great as you can go at any time you want.
I like 24 hour fitness because I can use their facilities at any time that fits my schedule. They also keep their facilities very clean.
I like 24 hour fitness for working out because they have good equipment and a good space to workout in.
I like 24 hour fitness and I went here because I have a work schedule that only allows me to exercise very late at night. I appreciate that I can workout any time at their gym
24 hour Fitness is great! It’s great because it’s open 24 hours. It makes it easy to find time to exercise.
Super expensive membership to just have a gym membership that only gets you access to gym equipment.
Loved the accessibility of this gym, working late night shifts so this gym is the best for still being able to fit a workout in. Customer service was great even for that late at night.
I am one of those people that goes back and forth between having a gym membership and not. But I have gotten a membership at 24 hour fitness 3 different times because I really do like them the best. There facilities are clean and have plenty of equipment. They have also had some of the best teachers for classes that I have ever had. I also like that I can use everything in the facility, especially the pool because that’s my favorite. I once had a membership to Gold’s Gym but for the advertised price of 9.99 a month, you didn’t have access to the pool, so that was frustrating since that was the only thing I wanted access to. When I have cancelled it has been easy and no questions asked, which I appreciate.
Good value for money. Haven't raised my dues in 25 years. Worth it if you actually use the gym. I go to a new facility with excellent equipment.
I love it! Its private..not many people..you can go anytime..take as long as you want
Awesome, I love this gym. It has everthing you need and it has space not to feel closed in, yet it is small enough not to get lost. Nice locker rooms
The one in Sandy UT is awesome. 24 hour has always been a little pricey but love the set up and everything they offer.
Great! I enjoy their classes (although I wish there were more in the morning) and their trainers.
I was a member at 24hr fitness for 5 years, the gym were always in great shape, always available and large. Their prices were very competitive but the location were minimal for where i lived, the one gym that was changed to another gym =(
I went and played racket ball and the courts were nice and clean. It wasn't too crowded and members were able to bring in guests which was very convenient.
I was a member of 24 Hour Fitness when I lived in Las Vegas, Nevada. It had everything I needed in a gym and I could go anytime I wanted and it was clean and they had plenty of equipment. They also offered classes that I could take advantage of whenever I wanted. Great friendly people that work there.
My wife and I had a 24 Hour Fitness membership a few years ago and we always felt like we were overpaying. Their gyms are great and the equipment is good. I just don't think that it is worth the money you pay to be a member.
I go the Super Sport 24 hour fitness located in Sunrise Florida. The Air Condition is always broken or they have something wrong with the Air. When you ask the Manager at the GYM she never has an answer for you. I paid 35.00 per month and the classes are getting worst. They have Zumba all the time but only two classes during the week that offer Body Pump. Really do we need to be doing Zumba all the time. No! we would like to have other classes. Friday no Body pump or anything that you could do but they have Zumba again. The Spin Bike are broken. The seat are broken and they make squeaking noise. The weight room has no air now. When you walk inside the building you could feel the warmth. The bathroom are dirty but staff are all sitting at the front desk talking. Now we seen a sign stating June 1 no more towel. Then why are we paying the price of a super sport.
Good equipment that is old type but will do everything you have to do for the fitness level you want.
Non-pressure sales, cancellation was non-confrotive
We belonged to 24 hour Fitness when we lived in Las Vegas near the Summerlin area. The facility was always so clean and not as crowded as some gyms. I liked the variety of fitness classes they offered as well.
I recently visited a 24 Hour Fitness in Meyerland Plaza (Houston Area). Following the tour of the facility, I started receiving marketing emails from 24 Hour Fitness. They include an unsubscribe link which I've clicked for several of these emails, but I still continue to get them. The local club told me that couldn't remove my email address from their system and that I should call "Corporate". "Corporate" told me that they had no way of dealing with it. WHATEVER YOU DO, IF YOU VISIT A 24 HOUR FITNESS, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS.
The hours work well with a flexible schedule and no matter what time you go in, the employees are very positive and professional.
I was a member of this gym for many many years. I really enjoyed going there because the staff was always friendly and seemed to like being there and helping if needed. At the time when I was going there were always classes offered at the times I could attend and the instructors always made it fun. A huge plus for me was that they offered babysitting and I always felt comfortable leaving my child in the kids club when I needed to.
Every 24 Hour Fitness I've gone to has been very overcrowded. I feel like it's hard to get time on the machines because there are so many people waiting to use them. The equipment is nice and all but just too many people for the number of machines.
I was a member of this club for about 8 years. I always had a pleasant experience and never felt uncomfortable when I went there. they offered a wide variety of classes and they were at times that worked for me. the club I went to was always clean and well maintained.
24 Hour Fitness was one of the first gyms I was introduced to. The main problem is that it seems like it's always crowded.
I like this gym a lot more than others because I feel like there are less people there and a lot of seniors use this gym. I like to exercise in peace and they have a great facility.
get a free membership through my job. pretty nice facilities and stay very clean
Very nice fitness room and very clean with a lot of available machines to use however a little pricey compare to other fitness centers.
I went on maternity leave in September of this year and my doctor told me in August that I could no longer work out. I called 24 Hour Fitness and requested to have my membership cancelled. Instead, the customer service rep told me I could just freeze it. I thought that would be a good idea and I could come back after my leave if I have time. Well, the guy never froze my account and I was charged through November (and an annual fee of $49 thrown in there too). I have spoken to FIVE different customer service representatives (2 managers) and have still only been refunded for one month. They told me that I needed to have a doctor's note saying that I had a baby in order to get the rest. My doctor faxed one over to them and still I have seen nothing. The last representative that I spoke to said that the refund was being processed and I should have it in 3-5 business days. It's been 2.5 weeks. This company steals money from good people. I had a baby and they took advantage of my situation.
I like the convenience of 24 hours. I was able to get training with a trainer. It was a little pricey, but well worth. the environment was very chill and non judgmental.
I have mixed feelings about 24 Hour Fitness. They do have a lot of cardio machines which is great. However, they only have about 8 - 10 treadmills that are actually good. The remainder of the treadmills skid when you run on them and they are outdated. It's also very difficult to get in and out of the gym due to the parking lot that is attached.
I’ve gotten a few day passes here when traveling. Always had a fantastic experience. Nice! Clean! Big! Tons of equipment! Worth the price!
After being a member of Gold's Gym for a long time, I switched to 24 hour fitness and I really was not too impressed. The price was good but it was a pretty basic and boring gym to be honest. It was always clean and people were nice but it definitely did not have the vibe I used to get.
Pros: Great amenities (pool, basketball court, steam room) Wide selections of machines Clean Cons: When something is broken takes a while for it to get fixed Hexagon plates
24 Hour is a great gym and I like how most of them have a pool and sauna. The only downside is the cost and how crowded it is at times
I went to 24 Hour Fitness just once but it seemed like a nice place. Clean, good staff, and plenty of workout machines and equipment to choose from
I love 24 hour fitness. Their gyms are everywhere! and I can workout whenever. Their contract staff aren't forcing you to join, they're encouraging you and willing to help you reach your fitness goals. Heck, I work out with the guy who signed me up! I think their rates are reasonable for the area, and given you can work out at any gym, anywhere, I think it's great!
