iContact helps business owners integrate their email campaigns with existing software platforms such as CRS, CRM, form and survey builders, events, e-commerce, mobile and social media. They are also one of the most competitively priced email marketing providers on the market, supporting 15,000 subscribers for only $109/month.

The Bad

There is a lot of information to digest to properly design an email marketing campaign. It may be difficult to fully use all features during the trial period without committing a significant amount of time to learning to fully utilize all of the features of iContact.

Additionally, offering free tools to nonprofits in North Carolina is wonderful, but expanding this offering to certified nonprofits nationwide would benefit many.

The Bottom Line

If you are looking for a full-featured email marketing management system with top-notch design, tracking and analytics, iContact is for you. Our review team found that in their test runs, they were able to complete basic tasks. To get the most out of all of the features, you should expect to spend several hours in a crash course (and the materials are all available free of charge for use) going through all of the features.

Tiered pricing is a nice touch and allows smaller companies access to the same high powered tools as the larger ones.

Pricing

iContact has a tiered pricing structure based upon the number of subscribers companies have on their email marketing list. They offer a full feature free trial for 30 days. During this time, you are able to send up to 400 emails to up to 100 email addresses.

Annual billing results in a 15% discount for all subscribers and certified nonprofits in North Carolina receive free use of all iContact’s tools. Nonprofits located outside of North Carolina may apply for a 20% discount.

Dashboard Functionality

iContact’s user interface is friendly and allows you to see a snapshot of all of your data in one place. The interface is broken down into headings and subheadings allowing users to access their information in a few clicks.

With a convenient mobile app which is available for Apple and Android devices, users can easily manage their email marketing campaigns from any of their devices, adding to their customers’ productivity.

iContact has a customer base that easily manages the needs of large and small companies, and the features used for the biggest companies are identical to those for the smaller ones, which gives every user the same powerful tools needed to plan, create, execute and analyze their email marketing campaigns.

Targeting

iContact has some functionality in targeting email campaigns. It is critical to remember when setting up email capture campaigns to consider which demographics which you may want to target in an email campaign so as to be able to include these targeting options in the initial email capture web form. With this information, iContact can filter your contact lists for targeted email marketing campaigns.

iContact offers suggestions and a case study for targeting email lists in their helpful document, “Ten Rules for Successful Email Marketing.”

Clickmap

iContact tracks all interactions with your email marketing campaign and delivers them in a simple and easy to understand chart in your user dashboard. iContact tracks opens, bounces, unsubscribes, clicks, click throughs, complaints (sent to SPAM), forwards, as well as those emails which have no information available (usually those which are deleted without opening). We couldn’t find any information on an actual clickmap though.

Mobile-Ready

Each of iContact’s templates are tested for mobile use. They have a robust and free mobile app which allows email marketing professionals to manage every aspect of their campaign from their tablet or smartphone. The Apple version of the application is less prone to freezing than the Android version, but our reviewers were able to access all features with both platforms with little difficulty.

Image Hosting

iContact suggests customizing your email campaigns with images, either from their template gallery or your own. Hosting of images can occur either on your servers or iContact’s servers. There is a limit of 5MB for online storage of images on iContact’s servers, to upgrade to more 10 MB storage, there is an added 10% of your subscription rate at a minimum of $9.95 monthly.

Email Preview

Before sending any email via either the mobile app or using a standard desktop or laptop, users can preview its appearance for users using various devices, browsers, etc.

A/B Testing

iContact helps you fine tune your email marketing strategy by offering side-by-side tests and giving you the data points for each right in your customer dashboard.

Export Tool

All reports can be accessed online or with the iContact mobile app. Download capabilities are available as well. Downloads are easily managed by visiting your user dashboard via your laptop or desktop machine. For small and medium businesses, these downloads should not occupy too many of your resources and can be run in the background while performing other tasks. For those with subscriptions lists above 15,000, downloads are best preformed after hours or when the computer is not needed for other tasks.

Surveys

iContact has templates which allow you to conduct surveys to define your demographics or receive feedback from your customer base. Additionally, with easy social media integration built into the email templates, you can maximize the reach of your survey by allowing your customers to interact with you via their social media accounts.

Social Media and Other Integrations

iContact makes interacting with your customers via social media simple for you and your customers. With integrated social media buttons right in the body of your emails, they are able to share, like or comment on your newsletters with a single click of the mouse. iContact suggests that you use a call to action involving social media (share, like, comment) in some of your campaigns to engage your customers via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Pinterest.

Other Reporting Features

iContact states on their website that they can virtually guarantee that your emails will not go to the SPAM folder. While not stating exactly how this is done, they do give several tips to help you craft your email subject heading and body of the email to decrease the odds of your email going to the SPAM folder such as avoiding words or phrases commonly associated with SPAM such as “free or .” iContact’s sophisticated software analyzes the body and header of your email to help you to avoid your message being banished to the SPAM filter.

Other Contact Management Features

iContact software give you powerful tools to manage your email lists including automated handling of all unsubscribe and bounces, analytics to fine-tune your messages and step-by-step templates to create email campaigns that work in a fraction of the time of other methods.
